# Honda CR-V (2023-2026) vs Mazda CX-5 (2026): Which Should You Buy?

Verdict

This is a genuine tie, not a disguised winner, both score 7/10 in CarCaseFile's rating, but for different reasons. The CR-V's problems are documented and largely behind it: the sticky-steering recall (24V-744) and the 2023 Hybrid's three recalls (e-CVT, battery module, fuel pump) are all free, VIN-verifiable dealer fixes, and 2025-2026 builds already have the corrected parts from the factory. The CX-5 is the opposite bet, its carryover 187-hp 2.5 and 6-speed automatic (turbo dropped entirely) carry almost no mechanical risk, but it has a live, unresolved electronics problem (telematics/SOS warnings, screens freezing or going black) that Mazda was still shipping software fixes for as of July 2026, on a car with only months of real-world data behind its "too early to call" best-year guidance. If you want closable paperwork and three years of accumulated data, buy a 2025-2026 CR-V (or a Hybrid with all three recalls confirmed closed); if you want the more conservative powertrain and don't mind buying into a still-updating software rollout, the CX-5 is a fair buy too, just confirm the July 2026 update is installed before you sign.

- • CR-V's documented issues are NHTSA safety recalls (free, VIN-verifiable, largely closed on 2025-2026 builds); CX-5's are software glitches rated 'moderate' severity with zero recalls as of Aug 2026, different risk categories, not a straight severity comparison.
- • CX-5 dropped its turbo engine for this generation; its carryover naturally-aspirated 2.5 has no documented oil-dilution issue, unlike the CR-V's 1.5T, which still carries a carried-over (though improved) oil-dilution question mark per its own file.
- • If you specifically want a hybrid: the CR-V Hybrid is available now (204 hp combined) but is the trim with the extra three 2023 recalls to verify; Mazda's hybrid doesn't arrive until 2027.
