# Audi A4 2005–2008 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The B7 A4 is a genuinely nice car to drive that punishes neglect. The 2.0T FSI engine has one famous wear item: the cam follower under the high-pressure fuel pump, which costs pennies to check and thousands to ignore. FWD automatic cars got the failure-prone Multitronic CVT; quattro cars got a conventional automatic and are the ones to buy. Records make or break this car.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2005–2008 Audi A4?

Buy the right configuration or don't buy one. A 2.0T quattro with the 6-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic, a documented timing-belt job, and any evidence the cam follower has been checked is a satisfying, well-built used car. A FWD automatic (Multitronic CVT) car is a gamble no matter how clean it looks. A failed CVT can exceed the car's value. This is a records car: the B7 rewards owners who did the maintenance and quietly ruins the ones who didn't. Walk from any 2.0T with no service history.

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Audi A4

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/audi-a4-2005-2008/checklist/)

- ☐ On the 2.0T: ask for proof the cam follower was inspected or replaced. No proof? Negotiate as if the intake cam and high-pressure fuel pump need checking, or have the follower pulled during the PPI (it's three bolts).
- ☐ Check the transmission FIRST: FWD + automatic = Multitronic CVT. Test drive for shudder from a stop, rubber-band surging, or flashing PRNDS lights on the cluster. Any of those, walk.
- ☐ On the 2.0T: confirm the timing belt and water pump were done on schedule (community consensus is roughly every 75k–90k miles). No record = price the job in.
- ☐ Cold-start it. Misfires, rough shaking idle, or a flashing check-engine light point to coil packs. Cheap, but a bargaining chip and a sign of deferred maintenance.
- ☐ Listen for a loud whistle/'tea kettle' noise at idle and try lifting the oil filler cap with the engine running. Extreme suction means a failed PCV valve.
- ☐ Drive slowly over speed bumps and listen for front-end clunks or creaks. Worn control-arm bushings are near-universal on aged B6/B7 cars.
- ☐ Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. 2005–2008 A4s are included in the Takata airbag inflator recall, and the fix is free at any Audi dealer.

## Common Audi A4 problems & repair costs

### Cam follower wear → camshaft and fuel pump damage (2.0T FSI)

$150–$3,500

engine severe 2005–2008 (2.0T only) ~any mileage; wear is progressive

**Symptoms:** Usually none until it's expensive. That's the trap. Late-stage signs are low fuel pressure codes (e.g., P0087/P0191), long cranks, and loss of power. The follower is a small hardened cap between the intake cam lobe and the high-pressure fuel pump plunger; its coating wears through, then the pump plunger machines into the camshaft.

**Fix:** Caught early, it's a ~$20–$40 follower swapped in about an hour. Worn through, you're into a new high-pressure fuel pump and intake camshaft, a four-figure job. The community-standard prevention is inspecting the follower every 20k–30k miles (or every other oil change). Later revised camshafts ('J' revision) wear slower but still need checks.

### Multitronic CVT failure (FWD automatic cars)

$1,500–$6,500

transmission severe 2005–2008 (FWD automatics only) ~80k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Shudder or judder from a stop, rubber-band slipping under load, harsh engagement, and the classic warning: all PRNDS gear indicators flashing on the cluster, then limp mode. Faults can be mechanical (chain/variator wear) or the transmission control module inside the unit.

**Fix:** TCM repair or exchange runs low four figures; a worn-out unit needs a rebuilt or used transmission, which can exceed the value of the car. Regular Multitronic fluid changes help, but no maintenance schedule fully de-risks these. Quattro cars use a conventional 6-speed Tiptronic and don't have this problem.

### Ignition coil pack failures (misfires)

$150–$450

engine moderate 2005–2008 (most common on 2.0T) ~any; often 60k+ mi

**Symptoms:** Sudden rough idle, shaking, hesitation, flashing check-engine light with misfire codes on one or more cylinders. Coils often fail one at a time, weeks apart.

**Fix:** Replace all four coils (and plugs while you're in there) rather than chasing them one by one. They're plug-in parts and one of the easiest DIY jobs on this car. Audi ran an extended coverage/service campaign on coils for cars up to 2007; that window is long closed, but it tells you how common the failure was.

### PCV valve failure (2.0T FSI)

$150–$500

engine moderate 2005–2008 (2.0T only) ~60k–120k mi

**Symptoms:** Loud whistle or 'tea kettle' noise from the engine bay at idle, rough idle, strong vacuum on the oil filler cap (hard to remove with the engine running), boost leak and sluggishness, sometimes rising oil use.

**Fix:** Replace the PCV/oil-separator valve on the valve cover. It's a common, well-documented FSI failure and a reasonable driveway job. Note: the notorious piston-ring oil-burning problem you may have read about is mostly the NEXT generation (2009–2011 B8 TFSI); on the B7, oil consumption complaints exist but usually trace to the PCV or general wear.

### Front control arm and bushing wear

$500–$1,600

suspension moderate 2005–2008 (all) ~80k–130k mi

**Symptoms:** Clunking or creaking over speed bumps and driveways at low speed, vague steering, uneven front tire wear. The multi-link front end has many small arms and ball joints that age together.

**Fix:** Replace worn arms/bushings, usually done as a full upper/lower kit per side once one goes, since the rest are the same age. Aftermarket complete kits keep parts cost sane; alignment required afterward. A known, near-universal B6/B7 aging pattern, not a defect.

### Takata airbag inflator recall

$0–$0

airbags safety 2005–2008

**Symptoms:** None until deployment. Degraded inflator propellant can rupture the metal housing in a crash, sending fragments into the cabin. This is the industry-wide Takata recall, and B7 A4s are included.

**Fix:** Free inflator replacement at any Audi dealer. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Audi's recall lookup before buying, and confirm the work was actually completed. Many older cars still have open recalls.

Sources: [Audi USA: Takata recall information](https://www.audiusa.com/en/compliance/takata/), [NHTSA: Takata recall spotlight](https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/takata-recall-spotlight), [Nick's Car Blog: Audi Takata recalls include B7s](https://www.nickscarblog.com/cars/audi-takata-recalls-a3-a4-a5-q5-impacted-including-b7s)

Budget for German-car maintenance, not Honda maintenance. The 2.0T needs a timing belt + water pump service (roughly $800–$1,400 at an independent shop), quality synthetic oil on 5,000-mile intervals, and a $30 cam follower check every 20k–30k miles. That last one is the cheapest engine insurance in the VW/Audi world. Quattro adds driveline fluids but removes the CVT risk entirely. Parts availability is excellent and the DIY community (Audizine, AudiForums, AudiWorld) has documented nearly every job. The S4's V8 is a different budget class: its timing-chain guides live at the back of the engine, and that repair is engine-out money.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Audi A4 problems (DIY)

### Inspect / replace the cam follower (2.0T FSI)

moderate 1–1.5 hrs saves ~$150–$300

**Tools:** Socket set with 10mm and hex/Torx bits, Torque wrench, Rags (fuel will drip), New HPFP seal/O-ring

- With the engine cold, relieve fuel pressure and unplug the sensor connector at the high-pressure fuel pump on the driver's side of the head.
- Disconnect the fuel lines at the pump, keeping rags underneath to catch residual fuel.
- Remove the three bolts holding the HPFP and withdraw the pump straight out.
- Pull the cam follower off the pump plunger (or out of the bore) and inspect the contact face. Any wear through the black DLC coating to shiny metal means replace it; a hole through it means stop and inspect the camshaft lobe.
- Seat the new follower, lubricate with fresh oil, install the pump with a new seal, and torque the bolts in stages.
- Reconnect fuel lines and connector, then crank and check for leaks.

### Replace ignition coils and spark plugs (2.0T)

easy 30–60 min saves ~$100–$250

**Tools:** Coil puller or flathead screwdriver (gentle), Spark plug socket (long reach) + extension, Torque wrench

- With the engine cold, remove the plastic engine cover.
- Unplug each coil connector, then pull the coils straight up out of the plug wells.
- Blow out the wells, then remove the old spark plugs with a long spark plug socket.
- Install new plugs torqued to spec. Do not overtighten into the aluminum head.
- Press the new coils on until they click, reconnect, and refit the cover. Replace all four coils as a set.

### Replace the PCV valve (2.0T FSI)

moderate 1 hr saves ~$100–$250

**Tools:** Socket set / Torx bits, Small pick for hose clips

- Confirm the diagnosis first: whistle at idle plus strong suction at the oil filler cap points to the PCV.
- Remove the engine cover and locate the PCV/oil-separator unit on the valve cover.
- Disconnect the breather hoses and unbolt the old PCV unit.
- Clean the mating surface, install the new unit with its fresh gasket/seals, and reconnect the hoses.
- Start the engine and verify the whistle is gone and the oil cap lifts with normal light resistance.

## The short version

The B7 A4 (sold in the US from mid-2005 through 2008) is one of the better-built small German sedans of its era, and it can be a rewarding used car, but it splits cleanly into good buys and money pits based on two things you can check before purchase.

First, the **2.0T FSI cam follower**. A small hardened cap sits between the intake camshaft and the high-pressure fuel pump, and it wears through. Checked every 20k–30k miles, it’s a $20–$40 part. Never checked, it eats the camshaft and fuel pump for $1,500–$3,500. It’s the single most important question to ask any 2.0T seller.

Second, the **transmission**. Front-wheel-drive automatic cars got the Multitronic CVT, which fails both mechanically and through its internal control module. Flashing PRNDS lights on the dash are the classic death notice, and a proper repair can exceed the car’s value. Quattro cars got a conventional 6-speed Tiptronic that just works.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Shop for the configuration first: **2.0T quattro, manual or Tiptronic, with records**. That car, with a documented timing belt job and any evidence of cam-follower checks, is the B7 worth owning. The 3.2 V6 skips the follower and belt entirely but costs more when its labor-heavy repairs do come up.

Treat a FWD automatic as a parts car with a nice interior unless it’s priced like one. And on any B7, run the VIN for the Takata airbag recall. The fix is free, but plenty of these cars still have it open.

The rest is normal aging: coil packs that misfire (cheap, do all four), a PCV valve that whistles when it dies, and front control-arm bushings that clunk over speed bumps. None of it should scare you off a documented car.

## What about the S4 and RS4?

The S4’s 4.2 V8 sounds wonderful and hides plastic timing-chain guides at the back of the engine, an engine-out repair when they crack. The RS4 fixed the guides (metal) but adds the famously failure-prone DRC suspension. Both are buy-the-history cars, at a different budget tier than a 2.0T.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall data, owner-forum reporting (Audizine, AudiForums, AudiWorld, PistonHeads), and specialist VW/Audi shop documentation, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Dangerous

### [Is the "$2 liquid that destroys engine sludge forever" real? Our shop-floor verdict.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-engine-sludge-destroyer-liquid/)

An aggressive solvent flush on a high-mileage engine is a textbook way to spin a bearing. The viral 'kitchen-cabinet flush' is folklore that real shops spend money cleaning up after.

Misleading

### [Is the "$1 Japanese oil trick" that stops engine wear forever real?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-japanese-oil-trick-mos2-engine-wear/)

The 'Japanese oil trick' is almost certainly MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), a real industrial friction modifier. It is German, not Japanese (Liqui Moly popularized it), sold openly at every parts store for $15-20, has real but modest measured friction benefits, and was never buried by anyone.

Appendix

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Audi A4 B7 years and configurations are best?

2007–2008 cars get the latest running changes (including revised camshaft parts on the 2.0T), and a 2.0T quattro with the manual or Tiptronic automatic is the sweet spot. The configuration matters more than the year: quattro dodges the CVT entirely, and a documented maintenance history matters more than either.

### Should I avoid the CVT (Multitronic) Audi A4?

Yes, unless the price already assumes a transmission. Every FWD automatic B7 has the Multitronic CVT, which fails both mechanically and electronically, and a proper fix can cost more than the car is worth. Quattro automatics use a conventional 6-speed and are fine.

### What is the cam follower and how often should it be checked?

A small hardened cap between the intake camshaft and the high-pressure fuel pump on the 2.0T FSI. It wears through over time; caught early it's a $20–$40 part, ignored it takes out the camshaft and fuel pump for $1,500–$3,500. Check it every 20k–30k miles. It's a three-bolt, one-hour job.

### Does the B7 A4 burn oil like other Audi 2.0Ts?

Mostly no. The notorious piston-ring oil-consumption problem belongs to the 2009–2011 B8 generation's TFSI engine. The B7's FSI engine can use oil when the PCV valve fails or the engine is worn, but it doesn't have the same design defect. Still, check the dipstick and ask the seller about top-off habits.

### Is a used B7 S4 or RS4 a smart buy?

Only with eyes open. The S4's 4.2 V8 has plastic timing-chain guides at the rear of the engine that crack with age, and replacing them is an engine-out job. The RS4's engine is stronger (metal guides) but its DRC suspension is a known, expensive failure point. Both are enthusiast cars that demand an enthusiast budget.
