Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Run the VIN through the BMW or NHTSA recall lookup before anything else. The starter recall cluster (24V-576, 25V-636, 26V-056, 26V-438) spans 2019–2024 cars, the fix is free, and an open one is a same-week dealer errand. Make the seller do it.

Check 02

Pop the hood and look for white, pink, or crusty residue around the oil filter housing, coolant vent hose, and expansion tank. That's the classic B46/B48/B58 slow coolant leak. A sweet smell after a drive is the same tell.

Check 03

Check the coolant level cold and ask directly whether the coolant vent hose or oil filter housing has been replaced. Receipts here are worth real money.

Check 04

Inspect from below for oil seepage at the valve cover and oil filter housing. Normal aging past 60k–80k miles, but use it to negotiate.

Check 05

Cold-start the car yourself. A long, slow, or laboring crank on a 2019–2024 car is exactly the symptom behind the starter recalls. Walk or demand the recall work first.

Check 06

On a 330e: verify both high-voltage battery recalls (20V-490, 20V-601) by VIN, then check that real-world electric range is near the ~20-mile rating on a full charge.

Check 07

On 2019–2020 xDrive and M340i cars: confirm the steering tie rod recall (20V-355) was performed.

Check 08

On 2023+ facelift cars: live with the screen for ten minutes. Climate control moved into iDrive 8 and there's no going back. Decide before you buy, not after.

Walk-away signals

No year is a landmine, but 2019 first-year builds collected the most early recalls (tie rod 20V-355, a small counterbalance-shaft engine recall 19V-732); verify completion · Any car with an open starter recall the seller hasn't had performed · 2020–2021 330e without documented battery-recall completion (20V-490 / 20V-601)
