# BMW 5 Series 2017–2023 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The G30 is one of the most reliable modern BMWs. The four- and six-cylinder cars are genuinely stout. The money risks are plastic cooling parts (oil filter housing, coolant hoses) that get brittle with heat and start leaking around 60k–100k miles, the M550i's V8 with its oil-consumption heritage, and a 2020–2021 530e battery-fire recall you must verify was performed. Buy a 530i or 540i with records and it's a lot of car for the money.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2017–2023 BMW 5 Series?

Buy it. This is the modern BMW to own out of warranty, provided you pick the right engine. The 530i (B46/B48) and 540i (B58) are strong, well-proven powertrains whose known failures are plastic cooling parts and gaskets, not internals. Annoying and not cheap, but predictable. The 540i is the sweet spot if the budget allows. The M550i is a superb car with a V8 that is much improved over early N63s but still the costliest to keep; buy only with full records. On a 2020–2021 530e, confirm the high-voltage battery recall (NHTSA 20V-601) was completed by VIN before money changes hands. Whatever the engine, budget for the oil filter housing job. Treat it as a when, not an if.

Years to avoid

2020–2021 530e without documented completion of the battery-fire recall (NHTSA 20V-601), Any M550i without complete service records (oil-consumption history matters on the N63)

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for BMW 5 Series

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/bmw-5-series-2017-2023/checklist/)

- ☐ Cold engine, flashlight under the intake manifold: look for coolant residue or oil seepage around the oil filter housing, the signature G30 leak point on 530i and 540i.
- ☐ Check the coolant expansion tank level and ask directly whether the car has needed coolant top-offs; slow unexplained coolant loss is the classic symptom of brittle plastic fittings.
- ☐ Look for oil weeping along the valve cover edges and a burnt-oil smell after a drive. Valve cover gaskets harden with heat on both the four and six.
- ☐ On a 530e: run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and require proof the 20V-601 high-voltage battery recall was performed; also verify it charges to full on a Level 2 charger.
- ☐ On an M550i: check the oil level and ask how much oil it uses between changes; walk away from a V8 with no service history.
- ☐ Cycle the iDrive screen, backup camera, and driver-assist features through a full drive. Screen blackouts and camera glitches are the most common electrical complaints, and a 2018–2020 backup-camera recall applies to many cars.
- ☐ Run the VIN for open recalls generally. Some 2020–2022 530i cars are under a starter-relay corrosion recall with fire risk.
- ☐ Pull the service history for the ZF 8-speed: a documented fluid service by 60k–80k miles is a good sign; a 100k+ car on original fluid is a negotiating point.

Known faults

## Common BMW 5 Series problems & repair costs

### Oil filter housing / plastic coolant-fitting leaks (B46, B48, B58)

$1,200–$3,500

engine cooling moderate 2017–2023 ~60k–100k mi

**Symptoms:** Slow coolant loss with no puddle, coolant smell, low-coolant warnings; oil seepage or coolant residue visible under the intake manifold where the housing sits. The brittle plastic coolant vent hose next to the housing is often the actual leaker.

**Fix:** Replace the oil filter housing (or its gasket) and the aged plastic coolant hoses/fittings in the same job. The housing sits under the intake manifold, so labor dominates the bill. Heat cycling embrittles the polycarbonate housing and gaskets; the failure is common enough that a class-action lawsuit names the B46, B48, and B58 specifically. Do the whole corner once rather than chasing one fitting at a time.

### Valve cover gasket oil leak

$600–$1,500

engine minor 2017–2023 ~70k–100k mi

**Symptoms:** Oil weeping down the side of the engine, burnt-oil smell after driving as it drips onto hot parts, oil film around the valve cover edges. Rarely drips enough to spot on the ground early on.

**Fix:** Replace the valve cover gasket (on some engines the whole plastic valve cover, since it distorts). Rubber gaskets harden from heat exposure; it's a labor-heavy but routine job on both the four- and six-cylinder. Not urgent at the seep stage, but fix before it fouls the belt or wiring.

### 530e high-voltage battery fire risk: recall 20V-601 (2020–2021)

$0–$0

hybrid battery safety 2020–2021 (530e built Mar 2020–Jan 2021)

**Symptoms:** No warning symptoms. The defect is welding debris left inside battery packs during manufacture, which can short between modules and in rare cases cause a thermal event while charging. BMW told affected owners not to charge until repaired.

**Fix:** Recall repair: BMW inspects and replaces affected high-voltage battery modules free of charge. Roughly 4,500 US vehicles across BMW/Mini PHEVs were affected. Free, but non-negotiable. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and require proof of completion before buying any 2020–2021 530e.

### Oil consumption / valve stem seals (N63 V8, M550i)

$4,000–$9,000

engine moderate 2018–2023 (M550i only) ~75k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Adding oil between changes, blue-gray smoke on startup after sitting, low-oil warnings. The N63TU2/TU3 in the G30 is a big improvement over the 2008–2013 N63 that spawned an oil-consumption lawsuit, and many owners see no issue. But valve stem seals remain the known aging point.

**Fix:** Mild consumption is managed by monitoring and topping off; the real fix for smoking startups is valve stem seal replacement, a very labor-intensive V8 job. Buy an M550i on its oil-consumption history and records, and price the car accordingly if it's already using oil.

### iDrive screen blackouts and electrical glitches

$0–$2,000

electrical minor 2017–2023

**Symptoms:** iDrive screen goes black or shows 'No Signal,' backup camera drops out intermittently, systems that recover after a restart. A weak 12V battery is a common trigger. BMW modules misbehave at marginal voltage. Separately, 2018–2020 cars were recalled for a backup-camera display defect, and some 2020–2022 530i cars for a starter-relay corrosion fire risk.

**Fix:** Start cheap: software update at the dealer and a load-test of the 12V battery fix most cases (recalls are free). A genuinely dead head unit runs roughly $800–$2,000 to replace, but that's the minority outcome. Verify all recall work by VIN.

Sources: [Bimmerpost G30 forum: iDrive screen 'No Signal'](https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1398462), [BMWBlog: starter-relay corrosion recall (incl. 2020–2022 530i)](https://www.bmwblog.com/2025/09/26/bmw-recall-starter-motor-fire-risk-2025/)

Plan for German-car money, not exotic money. Oil changes with the right full-synthetic, brakes, and tires are ordinary. The budget items are the plastic cooling parts. Figure the oil filter housing/coolant fitting job ($1,200–$3,500) lands sometime after 60k miles, a valve cover gasket after that, and a water pump around 80k–100k. A ZF transmission service every 60k–80k miles is cheap insurance. The 530i and 540i are the predictable ones; the M550i adds V8 consumables, bigger brakes and tires, and the valve-stem-seal wildcard. An independent BMW specialist instead of the dealer roughly halves most of these bills.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common BMW 5 Series problems (DIY)

### Engine & cabin air filter change

easy 30 min saves ~$80–$180

**Tools:** T20/T25 Torx driver, 8mm socket or flathead (airbox clips vary)

- Unclip or unscrew the airbox lid on the driver's side of the engine bay and lift it enough to slide the panel filter out.
- Seat the new engine filter with the sealing edge flat, then re-secure the lid.
- For the cabin filter, remove the few Torx screws holding the panel under the glovebox (or behind it, per year), open it, and slide the old filter out.
- Insert the new cabin filter with the airflow arrow pointing the correct direction and close the panel.

### Replace and register the 12V AGM battery

moderate 1–1.5 hrs saves ~$150–$300

**Tools:** 10mm and 13mm sockets, Battery registration tool or OBD app (Bimmerlink/Carly) , Memory saver (optional)

- The battery lives in the trunk under the floor panel on the right side. Remove the trim and the hold-down bracket.
- Disconnect negative first, then positive, then the vent tube; lift the battery out (it's heavy).
- Install a same-spec AGM battery, reconnect positive then negative, and reattach the vent tube and bracket.
- Register the new battery to the car with an OBD tool. Skipping registration makes the charging system overcharge the new battery and shortens its life.
- Expect one-time warnings (windows, steering angle) to clear after a short drive.

### Valve cover gasket replacement (B46/B48 530i)

hard 3–5 hrs saves ~$400–$900

**Tools:** E-Torx and standard socket set, Torque wrench (small increments, plastic cover), Plastic trim tools, Shop towels and brake cleaner

- Remove the engine cover and disconnect the ignition coils and any harnesses routed over the valve cover.
- Unbolt the valve cover in the reverse of the torque sequence and lift it off; note the bolt grommets.
- Clean the head's sealing surface completely. Old baked gasket material is why redone jobs leak.
- Fit the new gasket (and spark plug tube seals) to the cover, set it in place, and torque in sequence to spec. The cover is plastic and cracks if overtightened.
- Reinstall coils and covers, then check for leaks after a heat cycle.

## The short version

The G30 is the counterargument to “never buy a used BMW.” The 530i’s turbo four and especially the 540i’s B58 inline-6 are genuinely durable engines, and the ZF 8-speed behind them is one of the best automatics ever fitted to anything. What fails on these cars is mostly *plastic*: the oil filter housing and the coolant hoses and fittings around it get brittle from heat cycling and start seeping somewhere between 60k and 100k miles, common enough that a class-action lawsuit names the B46, B48, and B58 by engine code. Valve cover gaskets follow the same aging curve.

The two exceptions to the “it’s fine” story are specific: the M550i’s N63 V8 (much improved over earlier N63s, but oil consumption is still its known weakness) and the 2020–2021 530e, which was recalled for battery packs that could short internally and catch fire while charging.

## Which engine should you buy?

The **540i (B58)** is the pick if the budget allows: more power, arguably the more robust engine, same predictable plastic-parts maintenance. The **530i (B46/B48)** is the value play and costs less to feed. The **530e** is fine *with* documented recall completion and a working charge test. The **M550i** is wonderful and the only one we’d call enthusiast-tier risk: buy on records or not at all.

Years-wise, the 2021–2023 LCI (facelift) cars get the newest hardware and the most remaining recall-and-goodwill runway. Early cars aren’t traps. They’re just further along the plastic-aging curve, so price the cooling refresh in.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Put a flashlight under the intake manifold and look at the oil filter housing before you look at the wheels. Ask about coolant top-offs. Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup: backup camera (2018–2020), starter relay on some 2020–2022 530i cars, and the 530e battery recall all live there. A car with the oil filter housing job already done and a ZF fluid service on record is worth paying up for; it means the expensive predictable stuff is behind you.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall and complaint data, the oil-filter-housing class-action reporting, and G30 owner-forum threads, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Misleading

### [Is the "$2 liquid that stops any leak" really banned in 11 states?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-stop-leak-banned-11-states/)

Automotive stop-leak products are not banned in any US state. The products are real (Bar's Leaks, BlueDevil), they work in specific narrow situations, and they can permanently damage your cooling or oiling system if applied to the wrong leak.

Outdated

### [Does a "$1 mineral" really double car battery life? The Epsom-salt reality.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-mineral-doubles-battery-life-myth/)

The mineral is Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). It was a real desulfation hack for serviceable flooded-cell batteries 40+ years ago. It does not work on modern sealed AGM or EFB batteries, and trying it on yours will void the warranty without helping the battery.

Dangerous

### [Is the "$2 liquid that destroys engine sludge forever" real? Our shop-floor verdict.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-engine-sludge-destroyer-liquid/)

An aggressive solvent flush on a high-mileage engine is a textbook way to spin a bearing. The viral 'kitchen-cabinet flush' is folklore that real shops spend money cleaning up after.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the BMW G30 5 Series reliable?

By modern BMW standards, yes. It's widely regarded as one of the brand's most dependable recent generations. The B46/B48 four and B58 six are strong engines whose known failures are external: plastic cooling parts, the oil filter housing, and gaskets that harden with heat. Budget for those jobs after 60k miles and a well-kept 530i or 540i is a safe out-of-warranty car.

### Which G30 engine is the most reliable?

The B58 in the 540i has the best reputation, a smooth turbo inline-6 that routinely goes past 200,000 miles with maintenance. The B46/B48 in the 530i is nearly as solid and cheaper to run. The M550i's N63 V8 is the most complex and most expensive to keep, even though the G30-era version is far better than the early N63s.

### Should I worry about the 530e plug-in hybrid?

Only about paperwork. 530e cars built March 2020–January 2021 were recalled (NHTSA 20V-601) because battery packs could contain welding debris and short internally, a fire risk while charging. The fix is free module replacement. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and require proof it was done; beyond that, the 530e's mechanical side shares the 530i's solid four-cylinder.

### What does the oil filter housing repair cost?

Typically $1,200–$3,500 at an independent shop depending on how many of the surrounding plastic coolant fittings and hoses are replaced at the same time (they should be, since they age together). It's the signature G30 repair; assume any car past 60k miles either has had it done or will need it.

### How many miles will a G30 5 Series last?

A maintained 530i or 540i should reach 150,000–200,000+ miles without major internal engine or transmission work. What kills these cars isn't the drivetrain. It's owners skipping the cooling-system plastic refresh and gasket work, then driving through an overheat. Stay ahead of the leaks and the car lasts.
