# Chevrolet Equinox 2010–2017 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/chevrolet-equinox-2010-2017/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every oil-life alert (at least once a year)

### Engine oil and filter (oil life system, no fixed factory mileage)

$72–$169 DIY-realistic

GM's oil life system sets this, not a fixed mileage. Change within 600 miles of CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON and at least once a year. GM prints no separate severe oil number. SAE 5W-30, dexos-approved from the 2011 book on. Oil with filter: 2.4L 5.0 qt, V6 6.0 qt.

On this generation

- On the 2.4L, a dry dipstick does not mean an empty engine. GM's oil-consumption bulletin says this dipstick shows no oil once the engine is about 1.25 quarts low, and owners report dry readings minutes after shutdown that fill back in hours later. Check on level ground after the car has sat, and add oil a little at a time, since GM warns against overfilling.
- V6 owners, buy the filter by year. GM's 2011-2017 books list the ACDelco PF63 (PF63E in 2016-2017), and GM bulletin 17-NA-157 says the 3.6L needs a 22 psi bypass filter and that the look-alike PF48 is a 15 psi part. GM's own 2010 book lists the PF48 for the 3.0L, so the 2010 car is the exception.
- On a 2010-2012 2.4L, ask a dealer whether GM's oil life monitor update (program 12312, checked by VIN) was done. GM says the update calls for more frequent oil changes, and GM's oil-consumption bulletin says it caps the monitor at 7,500 miles. This rests on GM's own bulletins only.

## Every 7,500 mi (tire rotation)

### Tires: rotate every 7,500 miles, replace as a set

Shop job

GM rotates the tires every 7,500 miles from the 2011 book on. The 2010 book rotates them at each oil change, the first at 5,000 to 8,000 miles. GM recommends replacing tires as a full set of four, with new tires on the rear axle if you buy only two. On AWD cars GM's book says even the compact spare makes the system cut AWD power to protect itself, so keep all four tires the same size and wear.

### Wheel alignment

$232–$340 Shop job

Not a GM mileage item. GM's book says to check the alignment if uneven wear continues after a rotation. Get one with every new set of tires and after any strut, bushing or steering work, or part of the money just spent wears off unevenly. If an alignment will not hold, worn control-arm bushings are the first thing to check, see the 60,000-mile items.

## 22,500 mi (25,000 mi on 2011)

### Cabin air filter

$89–$111 DIY-realistic

2012-2017 books: every 22,500 miles or two years, whichever comes first, and the severe chart prints the same row. 2011 book: every 25,000 miles or 24 months. The 2010 book lists the filter part number but prints no replacement interval. GM says to change it sooner in heavy traffic, dust or poor air, or if airflow drops, the windows fog or it smells.

## 45,000 mi (50,000 mi on 2010-2011)

### Automatic transmission fluid (severe-schedule default)

$221–$278 Shop job

GM's severe chart changes it at 45,000, 90,000 and 135,000 miles (every 50,000 in the 2010-2011 books). GM's test: mainly driven in heavy city traffic in hot weather, mainly in hills or mountains, often towing, driven at high speed, or used for taxi, police or delivery. Any one counts. Normal chart: 97,500 miles in 2012-2014, 100,000 in 2010-2011, none in the 2015-2017 books. DEXRON-VI.

On this generation

- GM's severe test changed inside this generation. The 2012 book leaves heavy city traffic in hot weather off the list, and the 2010-2011 books leave out high-speed driving. Read the list in your own year's book before you decide which chart you are on.
- There is no dipstick routine for this fluid. GM's book says a leak is the only reason the level drops and that checking and changing it is a special procedure best done at a dealer, so a quick-lube drain and fill is the wrong shop for this job.

### Transfer case fluid, AWD only (severe-schedule default)

$113–$186 Shop job

GM's severe chart: 45,000, 90,000 and 135,000 miles (every 50,000 in 2010-2011). The normal chart: 97,500 miles (100,000 in 2010-2011), and the 2015-2017 books keep this normal row even though they drop the transmission one. The 2010-2011 books apply the severe number for hills, towing, and taxi, police or delivery use, and do not list city traffic for this fluid.

On this generation

- Do not aim a pressure washer at the transfer case output seals. GM's footnotes from the 2012 book on say high-pressure water gets past them and contaminates the fluid, and contaminated fluid should be replaced. This rests on GM's books only.

### Engine air filter

$105–$117 DIY-realistic

Every 45,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first, on both charts, so there is no separate severe number. The 2010-2011 books say every 50,000 miles with no year limit. GM's 2016-2017 books add: in dusty conditions, inspect it at every oil change.

## 60,000 mi (wear checks, no GM interval)

### Front brake pads

$377–$481 DIY-realistic

Wear-based, no GM mileage. GM's schedule inspects the brake system at every 7,500-mile visit (at each oil change, or every 12 months, in the 2010-2011 books), so have the pad thickness read then rather than waiting for a squeal.

### Shocks and struts

$1,145–$1,305 Shop job

No GM interval. RepairPal puts typical replacement at 50,000 to 100,000 miles, and GM's book lists uneven tire wear as a sign of wear. Worn struts let the tire bounce off the road, which cups the tread, so replace worn struts before new tires, not after. Budget a four-wheel alignment right after, since new struts change the geometry.

### CV axle boots (inspect), CV axle (replace if a boot has torn)

$230–$1,400 Shop job

No GM interval. Axles typically last 70,000 to 130,000 miles. A torn boot lets dirt in and flings grease around the wheel, where it can reach the brake rotor and pads. A boot caught early costs far less than the axle it protects.

### Control arm bushings

$200–$420 Shop job

No GM interval, typically around 100,000 miles. Worn bushings let the wheel move out of position, so an alignment will not hold and the tires wear unevenly. If a shop aligns the car and the wear pattern comes back, check these first.

### Motor mounts (inspect)

$391–$505 Shop job

No GM interval, and this research did not establish a mount weak point specific to this generation. Signs: a clunk shifting into drive or reverse, or vibration at idle in gear. A failed mount lets the engine move, which loads the other mounts and can break the exhaust flex pipe, hoses and wiring. Replace the bad one before it takes those with it.

## 97,500 mi (100,000 mi on 2010-2011)

### Spark plugs

$177–$229 DIY-realistic

Every 97,500 miles on both charts (100,000 in the 2010-2011 books), so there is no separate severe number. GM's parts list calls for ACDelco 41-108 on the 2.4L and 41-109 on the V6. GM's gap: 2.4L 0.030-0.035 in, V6 0.037-0.043 in in the 2014-2017 books (0.035 and 0.043 in the earlier ones). Check the gap on any aftermarket plug before it goes in.

## 150,000 mi

### Coolant drain and fill (DEX-COOL)

$408–$488 Shop job

GM marks 150,000 miles or five years, whichever comes first, on both charts in every book from 2010 to 2017. Unless you drive about 30,000 miles a year, the five-year limit comes first. Use DEX-COOL only, mixed 50/50 with clean drinkable water.

### Accessory drive belt (inspect)

$84–$137 DIY-realistic

GM's chart calls for an inspection, not a replacement, at 150,000 miles or 10 years (the 2010 book gives no year limit), and says to replace it if frayed, cracked or damaged.

## By calendar (any mileage)

### Brake fluid (the rule changes by model year)

$122–$179 Shop job

GM changed this rule inside the generation. 2010-2012 books: no brake fluid replacement at all. 2013-2014: 150,000 miles or 10 years. 2015: every 45,000 miles or three years. 2016-2017: every five years, no mileage. The severe chart prints the same row each year, so there is no separate severe number. DOT 3 in every book.

### Battery

DIY-realistic

Calendar item, not mileage. AAA puts battery life at three to five years and says to have it tested every year from year three. Plan on replacing it by year five rather than waiting for a no-start.
