# Chevrolet Impala 2014–2020 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/chevrolet-impala-2014-2020/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every oil-life alert (at least once a year)

### Engine oil and filter (oil life system, no fixed factory mileage)

$59–$82 DIY-realistic

GM's oil life system sets this: change within 600 miles of CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON, and at least once a year. Both GM charts carry the same row, so there is no separate severe oil number. dexos1 oil. 3.6L V6: 5W-30, 6.0 qt. 2.5L: 5W-20 (0W-20 allowed) in the 2014-2018 books, 0W-20 in the 2019 book, 5.0 qt. 2014 2.4L eAssist: 5W-30, 5.0 qt.

## Every 7,500 mi (tire rotation)

### Tire rotation

$49–$72 DIY-realistic

GM calls for a rotation every 7,500 miles on both charts in every book checked (2014-2020), and says to inspect the brake pads at each rotation. If uneven wear continues after a rotation, GM says check the alignment. Worn struts and bushings also wear tires unevenly, see the 60,000-mile items.

### Wheel alignment

$195–$286 Shop job

Not a GM mileage item. GM says regular alignment is not needed, and to check it when tires wear unevenly. Get one with every new set of tires and after strut, bushing or steering work, or the new parts wear the tires unevenly.

## Every 15,000 mi or 12 months (2019-2020 books)

### Windshield wiper blades (2019-2020 books)

DIY-realistic

Only the 2019 and 2020 books carry this row: 15,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, on both charts, so there is no separate severe number. The 2014-2018 books have no wiper row. GM's sizes are 60 cm driver and 47.5 cm passenger, which the 2020 book rounds to 24 and 19 in.

## 22,500 mi or 2 years

### Cabin air filter

$80–$155 DIY-realistic

GM marks 22,500 miles or two years, whichever comes first, on both charts in every book checked (2014-2020), so there is no separate severe number. GM says change it sooner in heavy traffic, poor air quality or dust. GM's filter number changes by year and trim. RepairPal: $80-97 for 2014-2015, $138-155 for 2016-2020.

## 45,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid (severe-schedule default)

$171–$199 Shop job

GM's severe chart changes it at 45,000, 90,000 and 135,000 miles in every book. The normal chart has one change, at 97,500 miles, in the 2014 book only, and none from 2015. GM's severe test: mainly heavy city traffic in hot weather, hilly or mountainous terrain, frequent towing, high speed driving, or taxi, police or delivery use. If none applies, the normal chart applies. DEXRON-VI.

On this generation

- Firestone's schedule pages for the 2015 and 2020 Impala list a transmission fluid change at 97,500 miles. GM's normal chart in the 2015 and 2020 books has no transmission fluid row at all. Go by GM's chart and your own driving, not the shop's grid.

### Engine air filter

$91–$114 DIY-realistic

Both GM charts match, so no separate severe number. 2016-2020 books: 45,000 miles or four years. 2015 book: 60,000 or four years. 2014 book: 120,000 or four years, so on those cars the four years comes first. In dusty conditions GM says inspect it at every oil change.

## 60,000 mi

### Front brake pads

$285–$342 DIY-realistic

Wear-based, no GM mileage. GM says inspect the pads whenever the tires are rotated, every 7,500 miles, and replace them as complete axle sets. A squeal is the pads' wear indicator, so do not wait for it to become a grind.

Parts for this job: Front brake pads.

### Shocks and struts

$680–$833 Shop job

No GM interval. RepairPal puts typical replacement at 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Monroe says worn struts let the tire bounce, which cups the tread, so replace worn struts before new tires, not after. Budget an alignment right after the struts go in.

### CV axle boots (inspect), CV axle (replace if a boot has torn)

$150–$1,400 Shop job

No GM interval, but the 2019 and 2020 books list cracked or missing CV boots among the checks at each 7,500-mile service. Axles typically last 70,000 to 130,000 miles. A torn boot throws grease around the wheel and lets dirt into the joint, and a boot caught early costs far less than an axle.

### Control arm bushings

$200–$420 Shop job

No GM interval, typically around 100,000 miles. A worn bushing lets the wheel shift, so an alignment will not hold and the tires wear unevenly. If a fresh alignment does not hold, check these before paying for another one.

### Motor mounts (inspect)

$457–$576 Shop job

No GM interval, and we have not confirmed a mount weak point specific to this generation. Signs: a clunk shifting into drive or reverse, or vibration at idle. A failed mount lets the engine move, which can break the exhaust flex pipe and damage hoses, wiring and CV axles. Replace it before it takes those with it.

## 75,000 mi (2019-2020 books)

### Hood lift gas struts (2019-2020 books)

DIY-realistic

Only the 2019 and 2020 books print this row: replace the hood lift struts at 75,000 and 150,000 miles, on both charts, and the 2020 book adds or every 10 years. The 2014 book asks only for a visual check of the strut and its hold-open at each service.

## 97,500 mi

### Spark plugs

$357–$477 DIY-realistic

GM marks 97,500 miles on both charts in every book checked (2014-2020), so there is no separate severe number. GM's plugs: 41-109 on the 3.6L V6, 41-115 on the 2.5L, 41-108 on the 2014 2.4L eAssist. GM's gap for the 2.5L and 3.6L is 0.037-0.043 in. RepairPal has no 2016 or 2017 row, the cost is its 2014-2015 and 2018-2020 range.

## 150,000 mi or 5 years

### Coolant drain and fill (DEX-COOL)

$455–$529 Shop job

GM marks 150,000 miles or five years, whichever comes first, on both charts in every book checked (2014-2020), so the five years usually comes first and there is no separate severe number. DEX-COOL only, mixed 50/50 with clean drinkable water.

## 150,000 mi or 10 years

### Accessory drive belt (inspect)

$311–$451 DIY-realistic

GM calls for a visual inspection, not a replacement, at 150,000 miles or 10 years, and says replace it if frayed, cracked or damaged. Both charts carry the same row, so there is no separate severe number. The 2014 book moves the 2.4L eAssist belt inspection up to 97,500 miles.

## Calendar items (any mileage)

### Brake fluid

$98–$143 Shop job

GM's interval changes by model year, and both charts always match, so there is no separate severe number. 2014-2015 books: 150,000 miles or 10 years. 2016 book: 45,000 miles or three years. 2017-2020 books: every five years, no mileage. DOT 3 in every book.

### Battery (two AGM batteries on 2.5L Stop/Start cars)

DIY-realistic

Calendar item: load-test from year three, plan to replace by year five. GM's 2015-2019 books say 2.5L cars with Stop/Start use an AGM battery under the hood plus an auxiliary AGM battery in the left rear of the trunk, and a standard battery shortens life. The 2015-2020 books say the car otherwise has a standard battery.

### Air conditioning desiccant (2019-2020 books)

Shop job

The 2019 and 2020 books say the A/C system needs its desiccant replaced every seven years, with no mileage attached, and call it a complex job for the dealer. The 2020 book also prints it on both charts. The 2014-2018 books do not mention it.
