Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Run the VIN through GM's recall lookup. On any 2021–2024 6.2L, do not buy without proof the 25V-274 engine inspection (or replacement) was completed. On a 2019–2021 6.2L, know it was never recalled but is now under NHTSA investigation EA25007, same bottom-end failure mode.

Check 02

Cold-start any V8 and listen for ticking or a misfire in the first 30 seconds, the classic collapsed-lifter tell. One cylinder misfiring on a 5.3/6.2 is a lifter until proven otherwise.

Check 03

Ask for service records showing lifter or camshaft work. A truck that already had the job done with updated parts is arguably safer than one that never failed.

Check 04

Test-drive at light throttle between 25–45 mph on the highway and feel for a rumble-strip vibration, torque converter clutch shudder on 8-speed trucks.

Check 05

On a 3.0L Duramax, note how long it cranks before firing when cold. Extended cranking on a 2020–2022 LM2 points to the known camshaft reluctor/long-crank issue.

Check 06

On a 2020–early 2021 3.0L Duramax specifically, ask for service records showing the redesigned timing chain (GM part 55515943) or listen for a rattle/slack noise at cold startup. A pre-redesign chain that stretches and jumps timing is a documented $8,000–$10,000 repair.

Check 07

On a diesel, ask whether the oil-pump belt was done. GM's factory interval is 150,000 mi on 2020–2022 LM2 trucks, extended to 200,000 mi on 2023+ LZ0 trucks. Either way it's a transmission-out job and a real negotiating chip.

Check 08

On a 2.7L turbo, check for coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, and oil level. Early builds have head-gasket and oil-consumption reports.

Check 09

Verify 4WD engages and disengages cleanly through all modes during the test drive, and watch for a 'Service 4WD' message.

Walk-away signals

2021–2024 6.2L (L87) without documented recall 25V-274 inspection · 2019–2021 6.2L (never recalled, now under NHTSA investigation EA25007) · V8 trucks built Sep 2020–Mar 2021 (defective lifter batch) · 2020–early 2021 3.0L Duramax (LM2): pre-redesign timing chain, documented $8k–$10k failures · 2019 (first-year truck: most transmission and teething complaints)
