# Ford Escape 2020–2024 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 07-03-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/ford-escape-2020-2024/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every 5,000 mi (oil service)

### Engine oil and filter (oil-life monitor, severe-schedule default 5,000 mi)

$74–$172 DIY-realistic

Ford's oil-life monitor sets the change, never past a year or 10,000 miles. Ford's dusty-road table says every 5,000 miles or six months, and the monitor expects 5,000 to 7,500 under moderate to heavy towing, extended idling or hot and cold running, so 5,000 is the default here. Ford's test is one condition driven primarily, not two. Occasional towing or dirt roads do not count.

On this generation

- The oil differs by book. Ford's 2020 to 2022 books call for 5W-20 (5.3 qt) in the 1.5L, 5W-30 (5.5 qt) in the 2.0L and 0W-20 (5.7 qt) in the hybrids. Ford's 2024 book lists 0W-20 (5.0 qt) for the 1.5L, and 5W-30 (6.1 qt) with an FL-2127 filter for the 2.0L, so buy by model year, not by the badge.
- Ford's 2024 book added short trips to its heavy-duty table: trips too short to warm the engine let fuel thin the oil and raise the oil level. If that is most of your driving, you are on Ford's extra-maintenance list, the same one as delivery and taxi work.

## 20,000 mi

### Cabin air filter

$81–$106 DIY-realistic

Ford's schedule says every 20,000 miles. For heavy idling and for dusty or sandy roads Ford's tables give no shorter mileage, only inspect frequently and replace as required, so there is no distinct severe number to default to. If that is your driving, have it looked at every oil change instead of waiting for 20,000.

## 30,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid (severe-schedule default)

$175–$215 Shop job

Ford's normal schedule says 150,000 miles. Ford's towing, heavy-idling and dusty-road tables all say every 30,000, so 30,000 is the default here. Ford applies that when you drive primarily in any one of them. Use Mercon ULV only. The hybrids' transmission takes the same fluid.

On this generation

- Two different 8-speeds went into gas Escapes. Ford's 2020 book lists the 8F24 at about 8.5 qt dry fill and the 8F35 at 11.6 qt, and Ford's idle-vibration bulletin lists a separate mount for each. The door-jamb label code tells you which one you have: 7 is the 8F24, 8 is the 8F35.

### Engine air filter

$80–$102 DIY-realistic

Ford's schedule says every 30,000 miles. For heavy idling and dusty or sandy roads Ford gives no shorter number, only inspect frequently and replace as required, so there is no distinct severe interval. On unpaved roads, have it checked at every oil change, which is what Ford's dusty-road table is asking for.

On this generation

- The filter differs by book. Ford's 2020 to 2022 books list FA-1939 for both gas engines. The 2024 book lists FA-2065 for the 1.5L and FA-2064 for the 2.0L. The hybrids take FA-1948 in all four books checked (2020, 2021, 2022, 2024). Buy by year and engine.

### Brake fluid change (every 3 years, any mileage)

$80–$120 Shop job

Ford's schedule says every 3 years, with no mileage attached and no shorter number in any special-conditions table. On a car driven 12,000 miles a year that lands near here. Ford specifies DOT 4 LV fluid and says the job needs special equipment, so plan it as a shop job.

### Wheel alignment

$146–$215 Shop job

Not a Ford mileage item. Ford's book says a curb or pothole hit can knock the front end out, that misalignment front or rear wears tires fast, and that uneven wear should be checked for alignment, balance or a mechanical problem before a rotation. With independent rear suspension, Ford says all four wheels can need aligning.

### Tires: same size, load index and speed rating as fitted

$400–$1,600 Shop job

Not a Ford interval, but a real cost line. Ford's book says to replace with the same size, load index and speed rating as original, and warns other tires can cause axle, transfer case or power transfer unit failure. On AWD cars, different sizes front and rear can damage or disable the AWD, so replace as a matched set. Ford rotates tires at every oil change.

## 60,000 mi

### Spark plugs (severe-schedule default)

$171–$247 Shop job

Ford's normal schedule says 100,000 miles. Its towing and heavy-idling tables say every 60,000, so 60,000 is the default here. The dusty-road table adds no plug change. The 1.5L takes three plugs, the 2.0L and the hybrid four, and each engine takes its own plug.

On this generation

- Do not buy one plug for every engine. Ford's 2020 to 2022 books list SP-550 for the 1.5L, SP-578 for the 2.0L and SP-530 for the hybrid. The hybrid gap is 0.051 in in the 2020 book and 0.049 to 0.053 in in 2021-2022, against 0.031 in on the 1.5L and 0.028 to 0.031 in on the 2.0L. Ford's 2024 book moves both gas engines to SP-597-X at 0.026 to 0.030 in and the hybrid to SP-530-X.

### Front brake pads

$239–$296 DIY-realistic

Wear-based, not a fixed Ford mileage. Ford's schedule has the pads, rotors and hoses inspected at every oil change, so replace them when that inspection says so.

### Shocks and struts

$894–$1,062 Shop job

No Ford interval. Ford's book names loose or worn suspension parts next to improper alignment as causes of pulling and wander, so a car that drifts needs its dampers and links checked before anyone sells you an alignment. Ford also wants uneven tire wear checked for a mechanical problem before a rotation.

### CV axle boots (inspect) / CV axles (replace if torn)

$150–$1,050 Shop job

Ford's schedule inspects the half-shaft boots at every oil change, the cheap moment to catch a tear. AutoNation puts CV axle life at 70,000 to 130,000 miles and says a boot left torn with grease loss lets damage spread into the joint, so a boot caught early is far cheaper than the axle it saves. Budget an alignment if the axle work disturbs it.

### Control arm bushings

$513–$724 Shop job

No Ford interval. Ford's book lists worn suspension parts alongside alignment as a cause of pulling and wander, so if a fresh alignment keeps drifting, have the control-arm bushings checked before paying for another one.

### Engine and transmission mounts

$376–$696 Shop job

No Ford interval. Ford's 2020 1.5L bulletin describes the sign: vibration at idle felt in the steering wheel, floor or seat, worse in Drive and Reverse. Cost shown is RepairPal's per-job range for this generation, which runs higher on 2021 to 2023 cars.

On this generation

- Early 2020 1.5L cars built on or before November 30, 2019 have a Ford bulletin (20-2215) for idle vibration that replaces the roll restrictor and the engine and transmission mounts. If yours has that shake, ask a Ford dealer about the bulletin before paying for mounts elsewhere.

## 100,000 mi

### Accessory drive belt (first inspection)

$0–$0 Shop job

Ford's schedule inspects the accessory belt first at 100,000 miles, then at every other oil change until it is replaced. Each engine takes its own belt (see the parts desk).
[Shop this part on the case file's parts desk →](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/ford-escape-2020-2024/#parts)

### Spark plugs (normal-schedule point)

$171–$247 Shop job

This is where Ford's normal schedule first calls for plugs. A driver on the 60,000-mile severe cadence from the 60,000 bucket is already on the second set by about 120,000, so this line is for a confirmed light-duty driver only.

## 150,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid (normal-schedule point)

$175–$215 Shop job

This is where Ford's normal schedule first calls for the fluid. A driver on the 30,000-mile severe cadence from the 30,000 bucket is on the fifth change by here, not the first.

### Accessory drive belt (replace)

$191–$292 Shop job

Ford's schedule replaces the accessory belt at 150,000 miles if it has not been replaced in the last 100,000. Each engine takes its own belt (see the parts desk).

On this generation

- Ford's 2020 and 2021 books also print "Replace the timing belt (1.5L engine)." at 150,000 miles. The 2022 and 2024 books drop that line, and Ford parts catalogs sell the 1.5L's timing drive as a chain. Before paying for a timing belt job here, ask the shop for the part number. Firestone's 2020 and 2021 schedules list it on hybrids too, which never had the line.

## 10 years or 200,000 mi

### Engine coolant (first change)

$70–$150 Shop job

Ford's first change is at 10 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first, then every 5 years or 100,000. No special-conditions table shortens it, so there is no severe number to default to. On most cars the calendar sets this one. Use the yellow Motorcraft coolant Ford's books list.

On this generation

- Firestone's online schedule for the 2020 Escape lists a coolant replacement at 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Ford's own 2020 book puts the first change at 10 years or 200,000 miles, so a coolant upsell at 100,000 on a healthy car is not a Ford requirement.
- The hybrids have two coolant loops, high and low temperature, holding about 15 to 17 qt together in Ford's books against roughly 8 to 9 qt on the gas cars, so expect a larger bill on a hybrid.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### Battery

$303–$337 DIY-realistic

Batteries fail on a calendar, not an odometer. AAA puts typical life at 3 to 5 years, so load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 regardless of miles. Ford's 2021, 2022 and 2024 books list an AGM Group 48 (BAGM-48H6-760) for the gas engines. Its 2020, 2022 and 2024 books list a separate 12V battery for the hybrids (BXT-99RT4-A).

On this generation

- Give the car a quiet night after a new battery. Ford's 2021, 2022 and 2024 books say the battery management system needs eight hours locked with the ignition off to relearn charge, and may switch off some electrical features until then.
- Expect firm shifts for a while after the battery is disconnected. Ford's book says the automatic transmission has to relearn its adaptive strategy after a battery disconnect or replacement.
