# Ford Focus 2012–2018 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/ford-focus-2012-2018/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every 5,000 mi (oil service, severe-schedule default)

### Engine oil and filter (oil-life monitor, severe-schedule default 5,000 mi)

$144–$173 DIY-realistic

Ford's monitor sets the change, never past a year or 10,000 miles. Ford's severe test is driving primarily in one listed condition: a car-top carrier, long idling or low-speed delivery work, or dusty roads. Its dusty table says 5,000 miles or six months, so that is the default. Both gas engines take 5W-20: 4.5 qt in the 2.0L, 4.3 qt in the 1.0L per the 2015 and 2016 books.

### Tire rotation and tread check

$49–$72 DIY-realistic

Ford rotates the tires and measures tread depth at every oil change, and every 5,000 miles on dusty or unpaved roads. Ford's book says uneven wear should be checked for misalignment, imbalance or a mechanical problem before a rotation, so rotating hides a fault rather than fixing it.

### Brake inspection, front pads on wear

$189–$302 DIY-realistic

Wear-based. Ford inspects the pads, rotors, hoses and parking brake at every oil change and prints no replacement mileage for pads. Replace them when that inspection says so. The cost shown is one axle of pads.

### Brake fluid (no Ford interval this generation)

$110–$161 Shop job

None of the seven Focus books checked, 2012 to 2018, prints a brake-fluid replacement interval on the normal or the special-conditions schedule. Ford specifies DOT 4 LV fluid (WSS-M6C65-A2) from the 2013 book on, DOT 3 in the 2012 book. With no book number, have the fluid tested at the brake inspection and replaced when it fails.

## 20,000 mi

### Cabin air filter

$83–$106 DIY-realistic

Ford replaces it every 20,000 miles. Ford's idling and dusty-road tables give no shorter number, only inspect frequently and service as required, so there is no distinct severe interval. A dirt-road driver should have it looked at every oil change. Ford lists one filter, Motorcraft FP-70, for both the 2.0L and the 1.0L.

## 30,000 mi

### Engine air filter

$67–$85 DIY-realistic

Ford's schedule says every 30,000 miles. For heavy idling and dusty roads Ford gives no shorter number, only inspect frequently and replace as required, so there is no distinct severe interval. On unpaved roads, have it checked at every oil change. Ford lists Motorcraft FA-1908 for the 2.0L, the 1.0L and, in the 2013 and 2014 books, the 2.0L EcoBoost.

### Wheel alignment

$268–$394 Shop job

Not a Ford mileage item. Ford's book says a curb or pothole hit can knock the front end out, that misalignment front or rear wears tires fast, and that front-wheel drive cars may need all four wheels aligned. Get one after new tires or any suspension work, or part of that money is wasted.

### Tires: same size, load index, speed rating and type as fitted

Shop job

Not a Ford interval, but a real cost line. Ford's book says to replace only with the same size, load index, speed rating and type as originally fitted, and names all-season versus all-terrain as a type change. Every Focus book says never to tow a trailer with this car, so there is no towing case for a heavier tire.

## 50,000 mi (manual transmission, severe-schedule default)

### Manual transmission fluid (severe-schedule default)

Shop job

Manual cars only. Ford's normal schedule says 150,000 miles. Its dusty-road table says every 50,000 and its car-top-carrier table every 60,000, so 50,000 is the default here. Every book specs WSS-M2C200-D2 for the manual, and the 2015 to 2018 books name the same Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid (XT-11-QDC) the DPS6 automatic takes.

## 60,000 mi

### Spark plugs (severe-schedule default)

$172–$225 DIY-realistic

Ford's normal schedule says 100,000 miles. Its extensive-idling table says every 60,000 in every book, and its car-top-carrier table does too from the 2015 book, so 60,000 is the default here. Ford lists SP-535 for the 2.0L (gap .034 to .036 in), SP-538A for the 1.0L, and SP537 for the 2.0L EcoBoost in the 2014 book.

### Shocks and struts

$683–$1,058 Shop job

No Ford interval. RepairPal puts typical replacement at 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Ford's book lists loose or worn suspension parts next to alignment as causes of pulling and wander, and wants uneven tire wear checked for a mechanical problem before a rotation. A car cupping its tires needs the dampers checked, not only an alignment, and an alignment after new struts.

### CV axle boots (inspect) / CV axles (replace if torn)

Shop job

Ford inspects the half-shaft boots at every oil change, which is the cheap moment to catch a tear. AutoNation puts CV axle life at 70,000 to 130,000 miles and says a torn boot lets dirt in, after which damage can progress quickly. A boot replaced when first found is far cheaper than the axle it protects.

### Control arm bushings

Shop job

No Ford interval. Ford's book lists loose or worn suspension components alongside improper alignment as causes of pulling and wander. If a fresh alignment keeps drifting, have the control-arm bushings checked before paying for another alignment.

### Engine and transmission mounts

$155–$178 Shop job

No Ford interval. RepairPal puts mount life at 60,000 to 100,000 miles, sooner with aggressive driving, and names a clunk when shifting into drive or reverse and cabin vibration with the engine running as signs. Left alone, it says the clunk spreads to bumps and throttle until the engine moves freely. Cost is per mount, from RepairPal's 2012 to 2015 rows.

## 100,000 mi or 6 years

### Engine coolant, first change

$417–$660 Shop job

Ford's first change is at 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, then every 3 years or 50,000 miles. No special-conditions table shortens it. Every book specifies Motorcraft Orange coolant.

### Accessory drive belt inspection

DIY-realistic

Ford has the accessory belt inspected at 100,000 miles, then every other oil change until it is replaced. There is no special-conditions number for it. Replacement comes at 150,000 miles below.

## 150,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid (no severe number for this car)

$246–$326 Shop job

Automatic cars only. Ford's normal chart says 150,000 miles in the 2012-2014 and 2016-2018 books. The 2015 book marks that row rear-wheel drive only, and the 2012 severe tables exclude the Focus, so Ford sets no shorter severe number. The DPS6 takes Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid only. The 1.0L's 6F15 automatic (2016-2018) takes Mercon LV.

### Accessory drive belt replacement

$161–$203 DIY-realistic

Ford replaces the accessory belt at 150,000 miles if it was not replaced within the last 100,000. No special-conditions table shortens it. Ford prints no replacement mileage before that, only the inspections.

### Timing and oil pump belt (1.0L EcoBoost only, manufacturer-only)

Shop job

1.0L cars only. Ford's 2016 to 2018 books list replacing the timing and oil pump belt at 150,000 miles. The 2015 book, the 1.0L's first year here, prints no timing row, so a 2015 owner has no book number. No special-conditions table shortens it. Manufacturer-only: no second source found.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### Battery

$237–$254 DIY-realistic

AAA puts battery life at 3 to 5 years, so load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 regardless of miles. Ford lists a group 96R for the 2.0L in every book, BXT-96R-500 for manuals and BXT-96R-590 for automatics in the 2015-2018 books, and an AGM H6 (BAGM-48H6-760) for the 1.0L. Warranty terms differ by retailer, so read them.
