# Ford Mustang 2015–2023 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/ford-mustang-2015-2023/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every 5,000 mi (oil service, severe-schedule default)

### Engine oil + filter (severe-schedule default, oil-life monitor)

$140–$432 DIY-realistic

V6, EcoBoost and GT cars run Ford's oil-life monitor, capped at one year or 10,000 miles. Ford's severe test is driving primarily in any one listed condition, such as towing, long idling or hot or cold running. Its table then expects the message at 5,000 to 7,000 miles (7,500 in the 2021-2023 books), and dusty roads get a flat 5,000 or six months, so plan on 5,000.

On this generation

- Grade and capacity change by engine and year in Ford's books. The 2.3L takes 5W-30, 5.7 qt through 2018 and 6.0 qt from 2019. The 3.7L takes 6.0 qt of 5W-20. The 5.0L takes 5W-20 through 2020 (8.0 qt in 2015-2017, 10.0 qt from 2018) and 5W-30 from 2021. Ford's recommended oil is a Motorcraft synthetic blend.
- Ford's 2021-2023 books say hard driving and track use can burn about a quart every 500 miles, and from the 2017 book on Ford says to check the level at every fill-up when the car is driven that way. The 2021-2023 books also change the oil after every track weekend.
- The 2023 book adds short trips to the severe list and says they can dilute the oil and raise the dipstick level. If the level keeps reading above the max mark, Ford says to see a dealer.
- The GT500 has its own schedule in Ford's GT500 supplement: oil every 5,000 miles or yearly in normal use, and every 3,000 miles or yearly for severe or track use.

### Tire rotation and tread check

$49–$72 DIY-realistic

Ford rotates the tires and measures tread depth at every oil change, and every 5,000 miles on dusty or unpaved roads. If the tires wear unevenly, Ford wants alignment, balance and any mechanical problem checked before the rotation. Cars with different tire sizes front and rear get their own rotation pattern in Ford's book, so a standard four-way swap is out.

### Brake inspection, front pads on wear

$425–$1,030 DIY-realistic

Ford inspects the pads, rotors, hoses and parking brake at every oil change and prints no replacement mileage for pads, so replace them when the inspection says so. RepairPal's front-pad rows run $834 to $891 for 2015-2019, $425 to $482 for 2020 and $973 to $1,030 for 2021-2023.

## 20,000 mi

### Cabin air filter

$83–$106 DIY-realistic

Ford's schedule says every 20,000 miles in every 2015-2023 book. For long idling and dusty roads Ford says inspect it frequently and replace as required, so there is no shorter fixed number. The filter sits behind the glove box. Ford lists Motorcraft FP-78 from the 2016 book on, and FP53 in the 2015 book.

### Dual-clutch transmission side filter (GT500 only)

Shop job

GT500 only. Ford's 2020 and 2022 GT500 supplements replace the dual-clutch side filter and top off the fluid every 20,000 miles, and change the fluid and side filter every 40,000. The dusty-road table says 60,000, longer than the normal number, so follow 40,000. Ford says the large main filter needs no service.

## 30,000 mi

### Engine air filter

$67–$85 DIY-realistic

Ford's schedule says every 30,000 miles. For long idling and dusty roads Ford says inspect it every 15,000 miles and replace as required, so there is no shorter fixed replacement number. Ford lists Motorcraft FA-1918 for the V6, EcoBoost and GT, and FA-1922 for the Bullitt, Mach 1, GT350 and GT500.

### Wheel alignment

$195–$286 Shop job

Not a Ford mileage item. Ford's book says misalignment front or rear causes rapid, uneven tire wear, and that cars with independent rear suspension may need all four wheels aligned. Get one after new tires or any suspension work, or part of that money is wasted.

On this generation

- The 2023 book prints road-course alignment settings, warns they can wear tires fast, and says to return to the street alignment and tire pressures after a track day. A car that was set up for the track and never set back will eat tires on the street.

### Tires: same size, load index, speed rating and type as fitted

Shop job

Not a Ford interval, but a real cost line. Ford's book says to replace tires only with the same size, load index, speed rating and type as originally fitted. It also says not to run summer tires at about 45°F or below or in snow, so a summer-tire Mustang in a cold state needs a second set of tires.

## 50,000–60,000 mi (severe-schedule default)

### Spark plugs (severe-schedule default)

$203–$450 DIY-realistic

Ford's normal schedule says 100,000 miles. Its towing and long-idling tables say every 60,000 in every 2015-2023 book, so 60,000 is the default here. Ford's plug changes by engine and year: 2.3L SP-537 through 2019, SP-550 from 2020. 3.7L SP-520. 5.0L SP-519 (2015-2016), SP-548 (2017-2019), SP-551 (2020-2021), SP-589 (2022-2023).

On this generation

- Check Ford's parts table before buying plugs for a Shelby. The GT350 supplements list SP-519 through the 2018 book and SP-581 in 2019-2020, and the GT500 supplements list SP-581 with a 0.037 in gap.

### Manual transmission fluid (manual cars, severe-schedule default)

Shop job

Manual cars only. Ford's normal schedule changes the MT82 fluid at 150,000 miles, but its towing table says every 60,000 and its dusty-road table every 50,000, so plan on 50,000 to 60,000 if either fits how you drive. Ford specifies Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid XT-11-QDC, 2.7 qt.

On this generation

- Mach 1 cars with the Tremec 3160 manual take 3.3 qt of MERCON LV instead, per the 2021-2023 books, so the MT82 fluid is the wrong bottle for them.

### Shocks and struts

$888–$2,021 Shop job

No Ford interval. RepairPal puts typical replacement at 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Ford wants uneven tire wear checked for a mechanical problem before a rotation, so cupped tires mean a damper check, and new dampers mean an alignment after. RepairPal's rows run $888 to $1,025 for 2015-2017 and up to $2,021 for most later years.

### Half-shaft boots (inspect) / half-shafts (replace if torn)

Shop job

Ford inspects the half-shaft boots at every oil change, which is the cheap moment to catch a tear. AutoNation puts CV axle life at 70,000 to 130,000 miles and says that once contamination reaches the shaft, damage can progress quickly. A boot replaced when first found costs far less than the shaft it protects.

### Rear suspension links and bushings

Shop job

No Ford interval. Ford inspects the suspension, ball joints and steering linkage at every oil change. If a fresh alignment keeps drifting, have the bushings and links checked before paying for another alignment. The wheel-hop entry on this page describes rear links flexing on hard launches, so a car with a launch history deserves this check first.

### Engine and transmission mounts

$572–$777 Shop job

No Ford interval. RepairPal puts mount life at 60,000 to 100,000 miles, sooner with aggressive driving, and names cabin vibration with the engine running as a sign. A worn mount lets the engine move and loads the mounts and exhaust parts around it. Cost is per mount, from RepairPal's 2015-2023 rows.

## 100,000 mi (coolant also at 6 years on 2015-2019 cars)

### Engine coolant, first change (2015-2019 cars)

$634–$767 Shop job

Ford's 2015-2019 books fill Motorcraft Orange coolant and change it first at six years or 100,000 miles, then every three years or 50,000. Ford's severe tables carry no coolant row. The 2020 books switched to Yellow coolant on a 10-year or 200,000-mile first change, see that bucket. RepairPal's 2015-2019 rows run $634 to $767.

### Accessory drive belt (first inspection)

DIY-realistic

Ford inspects the accessory drive belt first at 100,000 miles, then at every other oil change until it is replaced, and replaces it at 150,000 miles in every book.

## 150,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid and filter (no severe number for this car)

$325–$862 Shop job

Automatic cars only. Ford changes the fluid and filter at 150,000 miles, and its severe tables have no automatic transmission row in any 2015-2023 book, so there is no distinct severe number. 2015-2017 cars use MERCON LV, 2018-2021 books MERCON ULV (12.7 qt). RepairPal's rows run $771 to $862 for 2015-2017 and $325 to $416 for 2018-2023.

### Rear axle fluid (2017-2023 books)

Shop job

Ford's 2017-2023 books change the rear axle fluid at 150,000 miles. The 2015 and 2016 books list no axle change and say the synthetic fill needs changing only if the axle is submerged. Ford's severe tables only inspect the axle. From the 2021 book Ford also changes it every 500 track miles or after an axle overtemperature warning.

On this generation

- A full refill of a limited-slip axle needs Ford's XL-3 friction modifier added. The 2017 book also wanted the fluid every 30,000 miles or three months for long hot towing or long wide-open-throttle runs, unless the axle holds the synthetic 75W-85.

### Accessory drive belt (replace)

$149–$242 DIY-realistic

Ford replaces the accessory drive belt at 150,000 miles in every 2015-2023 book, after inspecting it from 100,000 at every other oil change. RepairPal's rows run $197 to $242 for most years and $149 to $184 for 2020.

## 200,000 mi or 10 years (2020-2023 cars)

### Engine coolant, first change (2020-2023 cars)

$491–$622 Shop job

Ford's 2020-2023 books fill Motorcraft Yellow coolant and change it first at 10 years or 200,000 miles, then every five years or 100,000. Ford's severe tables carry no coolant row. Firestone's 2020 page still lists coolant at 100,000, which is the older cars' number. RepairPal's 2020-2023 rows run $491 to $622.

Sources: [Ford (2020 owner's manual)](https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/Catalog/owner_information/2020-Ford-Mustang-Owners-Manual-version-2_om_EN-US_12_2019.pdf), [Ford (2023 owner's manual)](https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/Catalog/owner_information/2023_Ford_Mustang_Owners_Manual_version_1_om_EN-US.pdf), [Firestone (2020 schedule)](https://vehicle.firestonecompleteautocare.com/ford/mustang/2020/maintenance/), [RepairPal (coolant)](https://repairpal.com/estimator/ford/mustang/coolant-change-cost)

## Every 3 years (any mileage)

### Brake fluid (Ford interval on 2020-2023 cars)

$122–$179 Shop job

Ford's 2020-2023 books change the DOT 4 LV brake fluid every three years and say the job needs special dealer equipment. The 2015-2019 books print no brake fluid interval at all, so three years on those cars is a match to the later books, not a Ford rule.

Sources: [Ford (2015 owner's manual)](https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/Catalog/owner_information/2015-Mustang-Owners-Manual-version-3_om_EN-US_03_2015.pdf), [Ford (2020 owner's manual)](https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/Catalog/owner_information/2020-Ford-Mustang-Owners-Manual-version-2_om_EN-US_12_2019.pdf), [Ford (2023 owner's manual)](https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/Catalog/owner_information/2023_Ford_Mustang_Owners_Manual_version_1_om_EN-US.pdf), [RepairPal (brake bleed)](https://repairpal.com/estimator/ford/mustang/brake-bleed-cost)

## 5 years (any mileage)

### 12V battery

$249–$272 DIY-realistic

AAA puts typical battery life at 3 to 5 years, so load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 regardless of miles. Ford's parts tables list a group 96R (BXT-96R-590) for the V6, EcoBoost, GT, Bullitt, Mach 1 and GT500 in every book, and BXT-99RT4-A for 2017-2020 GT350s. Warranty terms differ by retailer, so read them.

On this generation

- After a battery swap, Ford says the battery management system needs eight hours of sleep time with the car off to relearn the charge state, and may shut off some electrical features early until then. A no-start or dark screen the first evening is not a bad new battery.
