# Ford Ranger 2024–2026 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The next-generation Ranger reached the US for 2024 with a wider track, a proper interior, and, finally, engine choice: the familiar 2.3L EcoBoost, an optional 2.7L V6, and a 405-hp Raptor. The truck itself is genuinely good. The record so far is about build quality, not design: 13 recall campaigns on the 2024 alone, a 10-speed that clunks enough to fill owner forums, and two 2025–2026 engine recalls on the 2.3 whose fixes were still waiting on parts in mid-2026. Almost everything is a free fix, so this generation rewards the buyer who runs the VIN before running the numbers.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2024–2026 Ford Ranger?

Buy it, with the recall list open in front of you. Nothing endemic and catastrophic has surfaced the way the prior generation's CDF drum failure did: the engines come from proven families, there's no class action against this truck, and most documented problems are free recall or warranty fixes. What this generation has instead is first-build volume: 13 separate recall campaigns on the 2024, a 10R60 that clunks and lurches enough to dominate owner forums, and two 2025–2026 engine recalls on the 2.3 (cam followers and EGR valves) whose remedies were still pending parts in mid-2026. So the play is simple: run the VIN at nhtsa.gov before you drive it, favor a truck with every campaign closed, drive the transmission hard in stop-and-go, and on a 2025–2026 2.3 specifically, confirm where it stands on recalls 26S35 and 26S10 before money moves. The 2.7 V6 is the sweet spot of the range if the budget allows: proven, dual-injected, and unbothered by the 2.3's recall drama.

Best years

2026 (dual-injection 2.3, most first-build defects engineered out, though still verify 26S35/26S29 by VIN), Late-2024 builds (after July 2024) with all recall campaigns closed

Years to avoid

Early 2024 builds (Jan–Jul 2024) until every campaign is verified closed. This window catches the most recalls plus the missing bed load-box brackets, 2025–early-2026 2.3L trucks with recalls 26S35 (engine long block) or 26S10 (EGR valve) still open. Both remedies were waiting on parts until roughly fall 2026

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Ford Ranger

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/ford-ranger-2024-2026/checklist/)

- ☐ Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before anything else. The 2024 alone carries 13 campaigns, including the power-window pinch (24V-597), front upper ball joint (24V-770), transmission valve body (25V-164), rearview camera software (25V-315), and the A-pillar wiring fire risk (26V-238). Every one is a free fix; confirm they're done.
- ☐ On a 2025 or 2026 with the 2.3L: ask the dealer where the truck stands on recall 26S35 (camshaft roller finger followers; remedy is a full engine long block, repairs expected from November 2026) and 26S10 (EGR valve poppet detachment; replacement valves expected around September 2026). A ticking or tapping 2.3 with a check-engine light is the 26S35 symptom. Walk away or make the recall Ford's problem first.
- ☐ Work the 10R60 on the test drive: stop-and-go, rolling stops, and a full lift-off at highway speed. The documented complaints are a clunk or jump on deceleration, a double-clunk into gear at startup, shudder pulling away from a stop, and gear hunting. Delayed or absent reverse is the 25S19 valve-body red flag.
- ☐ Watch the dash through the whole drive. A cascade of warnings usually traces to a failed wheel-speed sensor on this truck: Steering Assist Fault, ABS, AdvanceTrac, Hill Start Assist, Pre-Collision. Ask whether one has already been replaced.
- ☐ Cycle the 4WD system through 2H/4A/4L. A small number of NHTSA complaints describe the truck switching drive modes on its own at speed. Confirm the selector behaves and no drivetrain faults appear.
- ☐ Check the backup camera for freezing, lag, or a black screen, and confirm the 25S49 APIM software update was applied. The 2024 Ranger is part of Ford's 1.07-million-vehicle rearview camera recall.
- ☐ On a 2024 built between January 4 and July 15, 2024: if you plan a bed cap, rack, or rail-mounted anything, check for the load-box reinforcement brackets. Early trucks shipped without them, and owner reports put the unreinforced bed-rail limit around 88 lbs per rail. The J-brace kit is roughly $160–$170 in parts.
- ☐ Confirm remaining factory warranty (3yr/36k bumper-to-bumper, 5yr/60k powertrain). Most of what goes wrong with this generation is a warranty or recall event. A truck with coverage left is worth real money over one without.

Known faults

## Common Ford Ranger problems & repair costs

### Clunky, jerky 10R60 shifting: the 'klunk and jump'

transmission moderate 2024–2026 (all engines, Raptor included) ~Any mileage, most reports start nearly new

**Symptoms:** A low thud or metallic clunk followed by a lurch when lifting off the throttle at highway speed, a double-clunk into gear on startup, shudder accelerating from a stop or after coasting, gear hunting under sudden throttle. One documented case needed a replacement transmission at 1,600 miles after a worsening whine. Dealers frequently road-test and call it normal.

**Fix:** No silver bullet as of mid-2026. Ford has not issued a generation-wide fix, and unlike the prior gen there is no class action against this transmission. Software updates and adaptive relearns help some trucks; the worst cases have had valve bodies or complete units replaced under the 5yr/60k powertrain warranty. Document every occurrence with the dealer while coverage lasts. The paper trail is the fix. A separate small batch of December 2024 2.3L 4x4 builds got the wrong transmission mount (customer program 25B18), which shows up as vibration.

### Transmission valve body machined out of spec: unexpected movement (recall 25S19)

transmission safety 2024 (269 trucks) ~From new, build defect

**Symptoms:** Reverse gear delayed or missing entirely; the truck can move forward while the selector shows reverse or neutral. Part of a multi-model Ford recall (F-150, Bronco, Ranger, Mustang, Explorer, Aviator) for incorrectly machined valve bodies.

**Fix:** Recall repair. Dealers replace the transmission main control valve body free of charge (NHTSA 25V-164, Ford 25S19; owner letters mailed April 2025). Only 269 Rangers are in the population, but the failure mode is a roll-away risk, so confirm by VIN rather than assuming. No cost to the owner.

### Wheel-speed-sensor failure: warning-light cascade and drive-mode faults

electrical moderate 2024–2025 ~Low mileage, most reports on nearly new trucks

**Symptoms:** The dash lights up all at once: Steering Assist Fault, ABS, AdvanceTrac, Hill Start Assist, Auto Hold, Pre-Collision Assist. Owners repeatedly trace the cascade to a single failed wheel-speed sensor. Separately, a small number of NHTSA complaints describe the truck switching itself from 2WD into 4WD modes, including at highway speed.

**Fix:** Wheel-speed sensor replacement resolves the cascade in the documented forum cases, a cheap part and a straightforward warranty visit, but alarming when the whole dash lights up on a new truck. The self-shifting 4WD complaints are fewer and less well characterized; if it happens, get it documented at a dealer immediately while the truck is under warranty. Steering and electrical are among the leading complaint categories on the 2024 in NHTSA data.

### 2025–2026 2.3L engine defects: cam followers (26S35) and EGR valves (26S10)

engine severe 2025–2026 2.3L (26S35: 233 Rangers built Feb 2025–Apr 2026; 26S10: 2025 models, ~47,800 vehicles across Ranger/Bronco/Explorer) ~From new, build defects; EGR failures documented under 6,000 miles

**Symptoms:** 26S35: engine ticking or tapping with a check-engine light. Improperly installed camshaft roller finger followers can dislodge, causing a no-start or loss of power while driving. 26S10: the EGR valve's poppet head can detach from a bad laser weld, dumping exhaust gas into the intake and cutting drive power without warning.

**Fix:** Both are recalls, both free, both slow. 26S35's remedy is a complete engine long-block replacement, with repairs expected to begin around November 30, 2026. 26S10's replacement EGR valves weren't expected at dealers until roughly September 2026, and interim letters went out in March 2026 with no fix available. The populations are small (233 Rangers on the engine recall), but if you're buying an affected VIN before the remedy lands, you're buying a truck with a known open engine defect. Price it, or wait.

### Rearview camera freezes or goes black (recall 25S49)

electrical moderate 2024 ~Any, software defect

**Symptoms:** Backup camera image delayed, frozen on a stale frame, or missing entirely when reverse is selected. The 2024 Ranger is part of Ford's 1,075,299-vehicle rearview camera software recall spanning most of the lineup.

**Fix:** Recall repair: an APIM (SYNC module) software update, applied by a dealer or over-the-air, free (NHTSA 25V-315, Ford 25S49). Takes minutes; the only real failure mode is not knowing the campaign exists. Verify it's done on the test drive by shifting to reverse a few times and watching for lag.

### Bed rails crack under load: missing load-box reinforcement brackets (early 2024 builds)

$160–$350

body minor 2024 (built Jan 4 – Jul 15, 2024) ~N/A, shows up when a cap or rack is fitted

**Symptoms:** Cracking, warping, or bending at the bed side rails after mounting a cap, rack, or rail-clamped accessory on an early-build truck without the reinforcement brackets.

**Fix:** Not a recall. Ford handled it as a customer program plus an accessories requirement, which is why it blindsides owners. Early trucks shipped without the bed's load-box reinforcement J-braces; owner reports and complaints put the unreinforced bed-rail limit around 88 lbs per rail, so a cap, ladder rack, or rooftop tent can crack or deform the composite bed. The bracket kit runs about $160–$170 in parts ($160 Raptor / $170 non-Raptor) and is DIY-friendly; a shop will add roughly an hour of labor. If you're buying an early build and plan to mount anything on the rails, budget the kit.

Day to day, this generation should cost about what the last one did: shared-with-everything Ford parts, ordinary fluids, turbo-engine oil discipline. The difference is that almost every documented problem so far is a free fix: 13 recall campaigns on the 2024, the valve-body and camera campaigns, the 2025–2026 engine recalls, and warranty coverage for the transmission complaints. That flips the usual used-truck math. Condition matters less than paperwork. A truck with every campaign closed and a clean warranty history is the cheap one to own, whatever the sticker says. The known out-of-pocket items are small: the ~$160–$170 bed bracket kit on early 2024s, and on a 2024 or early-2025 2.3 (direct-injection only), an eventual intake-valve cleaning somewhere deep in six-figure mileage. The 2025+ dual-injection engine largely retires that concern.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Ford Ranger problems (DIY)

### Engine + cabin air filter change

easy 20–30 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** None required (flathead screwdriver optional for airbox clips)

- Unclip the airbox lid in the engine bay, lift it, and pull the old panel filter (Motorcraft FA-2022 on the 2.3).
- Wipe loose debris out of the airbox, seat the new filter, and re-clip the lid. Check the seal all the way around.
- Inside, open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to release the stops, and let it swing down.
- Slide the cabin filter cover off, swap in the new filter with the airflow arrow matching the old one, and reassemble.

### Oil and filter change (2.3 EcoBoost)

easy 30–45 min saves ~$50–$100

**Tools:** Socket set + oil filter wrench, Drain pan, Ramps or jack + jack stands, Torque wrench

- Warm the engine briefly, raise the truck, and pull the drain plug into a pan. Let it fully drain.
- Spin off the old filter. CHECK YOUR YEAR FIRST: 2024 trucks with the original 2.3 take the Motorcraft FL-910S; the 2025+ dual-injection 2.3 switched to the FL-2127 (different thread). The wrong one will not seal. Match by VIN or the filter on the truck.
- Oil the new filter's gasket, thread it on hand-tight, and reinstall the drain plug with a fresh washer, torqued to spec.
- Fill with the oil grade and quantity on the oil-filler cap / owner's manual, run the engine, check for leaks, and top to the full mark.
- Turbo engines punish stretched intervals. Stay on schedule with a quality synthetic.

### Wiper blade replacement

easy 10 min saves ~$20–$40

**Tools:** None

- Lift the driver's arm and note the blade style. This generation takes a 26-inch driver blade and a 16-inch passenger blade.
- Press the release tab and slide the old blade off the arm.
- Click the new blade on until it locks, and lower the arm gently.
- Repeat on the passenger side and test on a wet windshield before you need them.

## The short version

The Ranger that arrived for 2024 is the truck the last one should have been: wider, better inside, and available with three engines: the familiar 2.3L EcoBoost, a 315-hp 2.7L V6, and a 405-hp Raptor. One cab (SuperCrew, 5-ft bed), one transmission (the 10R60 10-speed), all built in Michigan.

The design is sound. The early execution wasn’t. The 2024 model year has racked up **13 recall campaigns** covering windows, ball joints, fuel lines, camera software, and A-pillar wiring, and the 10-speed generates a steady stream of clunk, jump, and shudder complaints that Ford has not put a generation-wide fix against. On 2025–2026 trucks with the 2.3, two engine recalls (camshaft followers under 26S35, EGR valves under 26S10) were announced with remedies that were still waiting on parts into late 2026.

Here’s the part that keeps this from being a warning label: nearly all of it is free to fix, and nothing so far looks like the prior generation’s transmission-eating drum defect. This is a paperwork generation. The good trucks and the bad trucks are separated by a VIN check, not a teardown.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Start at **nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN**, before the test drive, before the price talk. A truck with all campaigns closed is the one you want; a truck with an open engine recall and no parts available until fall 2026 is a truck you either skip or price accordingly.

Then drive the transmission like you mean it. Stop-and-go, rolling stops, and a full throttle lift at highway speed. The documented complaints are a clunk-and-lurch on deceleration, a double-clunk into gear at startup, and shudder from a stop. Delayed or missing reverse is the valve-body red flag. Watch the dash the whole time: a sudden wall of warnings usually means a wheel-speed sensor.

On engines: the **2.7 V6 is the low-drama pick**. The 2.3 is fine but comes in two flavors: 2024/early-2025 trucks have the older direct-injection-only engine, and trucks built from about February 2025 have an all-new dual-injection version that’s better on paper but owns both of the open engine recalls.

One more early-build quirk: 2024s built January through mid-July shipped without bed load-box reinforcement brackets. If a cap, rack, or tent is in your plans, the ~$170 J-brace kit is mandatory, not optional.

## What it’s like to own

Cheap and ordinary, on the evidence so far: Ford parts everywhere, simple maintenance, and a warranty doing most of the heavy lifting on the known problems. The 2.3 wants quality synthetic on time (note the oil filter changed for 2025: FL-910S before, FL-2127 after), and 2024 trucks carry the direct-injection carbon-buildup long game their predecessors did; the 2025+ dual-injection engine largely retires it. Document every transmission complaint with a dealer while the 5-year/60k powertrain warranty runs. The paper trail is worth more than the truck wash.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and recall facts are compiled from NHTSA recall and complaint data, Ford recall and customer-program numbers, CarComplaints statistics, and owner-forum reporting (Ranger6G), then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. This generation is still in production. The file will be updated as the record grows. Spot something off? Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Misleading

### [Is the "$2 liquid that stops any leak" really banned in 11 states?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-stop-leak-banned-11-states/)

Automotive stop-leak products are not banned in any US state. The products are real (Bar's Leaks, BlueDevil), they work in specific narrow situations, and they can permanently damage your cooling or oiling system if applied to the wrong leak.

Misleading

### [Is the "$1 Japanese oil trick" that stops engine wear forever real?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-japanese-oil-trick-mos2-engine-wear/)

The 'Japanese oil trick' is almost certainly MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), a real industrial friction modifier. It is German, not Japanese (Liqui Moly popularized it), sold openly at every parts store for $15-20, has real but modest measured friction benefits, and was never buried by anyone.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the 2024 Ford Ranger a reliable truck?

Mechanically, the ingredients are proven. The 2.3 has a decade of service behind it, the 2.7 V6 is one of Ford's better engines, and nothing endemic like the prior generation's transmission drum failure has surfaced. What the 2024 has instead is first-year build quality: 13 separate recall campaigns, widespread 10-speed clunk complaints, and sensor-driven warning-light cascades. Almost all of it is fixed free under recall or warranty, so a specific truck's reliability mostly comes down to whether its campaigns are closed. Run the VIN before judging the truck.

### What are the most common problems with the 2024 Ford Ranger?

The clunky, jerky 10R60 10-speed leads the complaint data, followed by electrical faults: a failed wheel-speed sensor that lights up the whole dash (Steering Assist Fault, ABS, AdvanceTrac), and a frozen backup camera covered by recall 25S49. Early builds also shipped without bed load-box reinforcement brackets, and a small number of trucks got a mis-machined transmission valve body (recall 25S19) that can cause movement in reverse or neutral. On 2025–2026 2.3L trucks, add the camshaft-follower and EGR-valve engine recalls.

### Does the new Ford Ranger have transmission problems?

Yes, but a different kind than the 2019–2023 truck. This generation's 10R60 clunks, jumps on deceleration, and shudders enough to fill owner forums, and one documented truck needed a replacement transmission at 1,600 miles, but there's no class action and no widespread catastrophic failure pattern like the old CDF drum. The one hard defect is recall 25S19: 269 trucks with a valve body machined out of spec that can move unexpectedly in reverse or neutral. Test drive hard, check the recall by VIN, and document any clunking with a dealer while the powertrain warranty runs.

### Should I buy the 2.3 or the 2.7 EcoBoost Ranger?

If the budget allows, the 2.7 V6 is the easy pick: 400 lb-ft, port + direct injection (so no carbon-buildup long game), a strong track record in the F-150, and none of the 2.3's recall drama. The 2021–2022 intake-valve recall on this engine family predates the Ranger application entirely. The 2.3 is a fine engine too, with a wrinkle: 2024 and early-2025 trucks have the older direct-injection-only version, while trucks built from roughly February 2025 get an all-new dual-injection 2.3, which is better on paper but is the engine covered by recalls 26S35 and 26S10. Whichever you pick, buy on recall status.

### How many miles will a 2024 Ford Ranger last?

Honest answer: nobody knows yet. The oldest trucks had barely three years and modest mileage on them as of 2026, so there is no real high-mileage data. The reasonable inference is from the engine families: the 2.3 EcoBoost routinely clears 200,000 miles in the previous Ranger and Mustang with consistent oil changes, and the 2.7 has the same reputation in the F-150. Treat 200k as plausible, not proven, and let the recall list, not longevity fears, drive the buying decision.

### How many recalls does the 2024 Ford Ranger have?

Thirteen NHTSA campaigns as of mid-2026, including the power-window pinch recall (about 70,000 trucks), front upper ball joint attachment (two related campaigns), a fuel vapor line on 65 2.7L trucks, the transmission valve body (269 trucks), rearview camera software, side-curtain airbags, high-pressure fuel pump bolts on the 2.3, an engine block heater, trailer brake module software, A-pillar wiring with a fire risk, and seat-frame bolts. Every one is a free dealer fix. Check any specific truck at nhtsa.gov/recalls by VIN. The count matters less than whether the work is done.

### Is the Ford Ranger Raptor reliable?

Too early for a verdict, but so far US complaint data shows no Raptor-specific mechanical failure pattern. The 3.0 EcoBoost is shared with the Bronco Raptor, and the Raptor uses the same 10R60 10-speed as the rest of the range (with an added transmission cooler), so it shares the same clunk complaints and recall exposure rather than adding new ones. Early owners mostly reported delivery-quality items: panel alignment, seat wear, infotainment freezes. Buy it like any other truck in this generation. VIN first.
