# Honda Odyssey 2018–present · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

The CarCaseFile editorial team · filed 07-16-2026 · updated 09-22-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/honda-odyssey-2018-2024/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every oil service (Maintenance Minder, about 3,000-10,000 mi)

### Engine oil and filter (Maintenance Minder: no fixed factory mileage; run it at the severe end)

$140–$185 DIY-realistic

Honda sets no oil mileage for this van. The Maintenance Minder calls it, and if it has not asked within 12 months, Honda says change it anyway. KBB puts minder calls at 7,500-10,000 mi in easy use and 3,000-4,999 in severe use. The J35 takes 0W-20, 5.7 quarts with the filter. Honda's manual says the Minder calculates oil life from engine operating conditions, so change it when the display asks.

## 15,000 mi

### Engine air filter (severe-schedule default: dusty driving)

$65–$90 DIY-realistic

The minder calls this as code 2 with no printed mileage. Honda's footnote says replace it every 15,000 miles if you drive in dusty conditions, and that is the only fixed number Honda prints for it, so it is the default here. Gravel roads and construction zones count. A van that never sees dust can wait for code 2.

### Cabin air filter (severe-schedule default: city soot)

$55–$75 DIY-realistic

Also code 2, with its own footnote: every 15,000 miles if you drive mainly in urban areas with heavy soot from industry and diesel vehicles. Daily city traffic behind trucks and buses is the case Honda describes. A clogged cabin filter costs you HVAC airflow and a musty smell, not engine health.

## 30,000 mi

### Wheel alignment

$110–$165 Shop job

Not a Honda schedule item. Have it checked about once a year and every time tires or suspension parts go on. Misalignment and worn dampers both cup tread, and this generation's rear shocks are a known replacement (see the problem list). New shocks or new tires without an alignment check waste part of what you just paid for.

### Tires: right size and load rating for a heavy van

$500–$1,020 Shop job

Not a Honda schedule item, but a real cost line. Buy the size and load index on the door-jamb label: 235/60R18 103H or 235/55R19 101H, by trim. Rotate at every minder code 1. Worn shocks cup tires, so if a set is wearing unevenly, check the rear shocks before blaming the tires.

## 60,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid, 9-speed (2018-2019 LX, EX, EX-L only; severe-schedule default)

$150–$340 Shop job

Honda's footnote for the 9-speed: slow mountain driving or towing heats the fluid, so change it at 60,000 miles or 3 years, then every 30,000 miles or 2 years, sooner than the minder would ask. If you tow or live in the hills, that is your schedule. The footnote excludes Touring and Elite, which have the 10-speed. The fluid is Honda ATF-Type 3.1 or higher.

### Automatic transmission fluid, 10-speed (2018-2019 Touring and Elite, every trim 2020-2024; Maintenance Minder code 3)

$150–$340 Shop job

Honda prints no mileage and no severe number for the 10-speed. Code 3 on the minder calls it. Dealer schedules print 90,000 miles, and one prints 45,000 for severe use, but neither figure appears in Honda's manual. The fluid is Honda ATF-Type 2.

On this generation

- The two transmissions in this generation take different fluids, and Honda's manual says each must not be mixed with other transmission fluids, with damage from a non-equivalent fluid not covered by the warranty. A Honda dealer's own schedule warns 10-speed owners off Type 3.1 and universal fluids. Confirm which transmission you have before a quick-lube pours anything in.

### Timing belt, water pump inspection (severe-schedule default: 60,000 mi in extreme heat or cold; otherwise code 4, about 100,000 mi)

$1,170–$1,470 Shop job

The J35Y6 is belt-driven. The minder calls the belt as code 4 with the plugs, and Honda's press kit calls that a 100,000-mile tune-up. Honda's footnote cuts it to 60,000 miles if you regularly drive in temperatures over 110°F or under -20°F. That is the only severe number Honda prints for the belt, so it is listed here. Outside those climates, wait for code 4.

On this generation

- On a 2019 van, run the VIN for recall 19V-298 before paying for a belt. Honda found the timing belt teeth could separate, and dealers inspect the belt and replace it, plus any engine damage, free.
- Honda's book says replace the belt and inspect the water pump, not replace it. Shops commonly quote the pump, tensioner and pulleys with the belt because the labor overlaps, and RepairPal's belt estimate leaves those parts out, so compare quotes line by line.

### Serpentine (drive) belt

$165–$215 DIY-realistic

Honda gives no replacement mileage. Code 2 has the shop inspect the belt each time the air filters come due. Replace it on cracks, glazing or squeal.

### Brake pads (wear-based)

$300–$370 DIY-realistic

Honda gives no pad mileage. Every B service includes a front and rear brake inspection, so replace on measured thickness, not on a guess.

On this generation

- The rear calipers carry the electric parking brake motors. Before the rear pistons can go back, the system goes into maintenance mode with a scan tool, or the actuator comes off so its spindle can be wound in by hand. Pushing the pistons back without that step risks damaging the actuator.

### Shocks and struts (inspect)

Shop job

No Honda interval. This generation's rear shocks rust through at the top and leak, commonly by 50,000-80,000 miles (see the problem list), which is why the check sits here. A worn damper lets the tire bounce and cup its tread. Replace in pairs and get an alignment after.

### CV axle boots (inspect) / CV axle (replace if torn and worn)

$230–$1,740 Shop job

Every B service tells the shop to inspect the driveshaft boots, so a tear should be caught early. Grease flung from a torn boot coats the rotor and soaks into the pads, which then grab or pull. Caught early, a boot is a small add-on. A worn-out axle costs far more.

## About 100,000 mi (Maintenance Minder code 4)

### Spark plugs, with valve clearance inspection (code 4)

$300–$620 Shop job

Code 4 replaces all six plugs and inspects valve clearance, alongside the timing belt. Honda prints no mileage for it. Honda's press kit calls it a 100,000-mile tune-up, and a Honda dealer schedule prints 100,000 for the plugs. Honda also says to adjust the valves at any A, B, 1, 2 or 3 service if they are noisy.

On this generation

- Buy plugs by the number printed in the owner's manual, NGK DILZKR7B11G, the same in the 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024 books. Honda part 12290-6A0-A01 (NGK DILKAR8P8SY) is catalogued for the Accord, Civic and CR-V, not the Odyssey, so check the box against the manual.

### Engine mounts (wear-based)

$880–$1,000 Shop job

No Honda interval. This V6 sits on active, electronically driven mounts front and rear that cancel the shake when VCM shuts cylinders off. Tells of a worn mount: a clunk or thud when shifting, and vibration at idle. A loose engine moves enough to strain hoses and parts around it, so a bad mount should not ride.

### Control arm bushings (wear-based)

$200–$420 Shop job

No Honda interval, though every B service includes a suspension inspection. Bushings typically wear out around 100,000 miles, sooner on rough roads. A worn one lets the wheel shift out of alignment, so an alignment that will not hold points here. Budget an alignment after replacing them.

## 120,000 mi or 10 years (first coolant)

### Engine coolant (Maintenance Minder code 5)

$340–$400 Shop job

Code 5 calls it, and Honda's manual prints no mileage for it. A Honda dealer schedule and a Honda enthusiast guide both put the factory Type 2 fill at 10 years or 120,000 miles, then every 5 years or 60,000. Those figures are theirs, not the manual's. Refill with Honda Long-Life Type 2, 50/50, about 1.7 gallons.

## Every 3 years (Maintenance Minder code 7)

### Brake fluid (Maintenance Minder code 7, or every 3 years)

$110–$200 Shop job

Code 7 on the minder, with a calendar backstop: if code 7 has not come up within 36 months of the last reset, Honda says change it every 3 years. Honda publishes no separate severe interval. The footnote means a low-mileage van still goes on the 3-year clock. The spec is Honda Heavy Duty DOT 3.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### 12-volt battery

$270–$370 DIY-realistic

Batteries age by the calendar. The average lasts 3 to 5 years, so have it tested from year 3 and plan on replacing it by year 5 at any mileage. Match the group size and cold-cranking amps on the parts desk, then read the warranty: the same Interstate battery carries a 36-month prorated warranty at Costco and 30 months of free replacement at Pep Boys or Amazon.

On this generation

- Vans with Auto Idle Stop need the battery type Honda specifies for it. Honda's manual says another type can shorten battery life and stop idle-stop from working. On 2018-2019 vans only the 10-speed Touring and Elite have idle-stop, and the 2018 and 2019 books put the AGM battery section under Models with Auto Idle Stop, so an early 9-speed van is a different battery.
