# Honda Odyssey 2018–present Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The 5th-gen Odyssey is a genuinely good family van with a clear split down the middle: 2018–2019 vans carry the troublesome ZF 9-speed transmission, a connecting-rod-bearing engine recall, and a sliding-door latch recall, while 2020+ vans got the excellent 10-speed on every trim and shed most of the drama. The generation is still on sale, and a 2025 refresh brought new styling and infotainment around the same proven V6. But 2026 put two airbag recalls back onto older vans, and NHTSA is still investigating the auto idle-stop no-restart fault across 2018–2025, refreshed vans included. Buy a 2021–2022 and it's one of the best used minivans on the market; buy an early one without checking the recall history and the 9-speed's behavior, and you can inherit real money problems.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2018–present Honda Odyssey?

Buy the second half of the generation. A 2021–2022 Odyssey is one of the safest used-minivan buys there is: 10-speed on every trim, post-facelift, past the early recalls. 2022 is the standout year. The 2018–2019 vans are where the risk lives: the ZF 9-speed in LX/EX/EX-L trims judders and shifts harshly enough to have drawn a class action, and those years are also covered by the connecting-rod-bearing engine recall and the sliding-door latch recall. The 2025 refresh (new nose, 9-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay, Sport-L replacing Sport, base trim dropped) changed nothing mechanical, same V6 and 10-speed. But it did not cure the auto idle-stop no-restart fault, which dominates early NHTSA complaints on 2025 vans and sits inside an open federal investigation, so a nearly-new one buys you a warranty, not a fix. An early van isn't an automatic no. But only buy one after confirming every recall is done by VIN, including the two 2026 airbag campaigns, and taking a long test drive with your full attention on the transmission.

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Honda Odyssey

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/honda-odyssey-2018-2024/checklist/)

- ☐ Run the VIN through Honda's recall lookup (hondainfo.honda.com or NHTSA) and confirm every open campaign is closed: the connecting-rod-bearing recall (23V-751), the fuel-pump recalls (21V-215 on 2019 vans, 23V-858), the sliding-door latch recall, the TCU software recall on 2018–2019 Touring/Elite, the timing-belt recall on 2019 vans (NHTSA 19V-298), the rear brake caliper recall on 2018–2019 (NHTSA 18V-777), the rear camera recall on 2018–2020 (NHTSA 26V-423), plus the two 2026 airbag campaigns: the side-airbag software recall (26V-227, 2018–2022) and the seat-weight-sensor recall (26V-332, which expanded 24V-064 and reaches vans as new as 2026).
- ☐ On 2018–2019 LX/EX/EX-L (9-speed): take a long test drive with steady light throttle at 30–45 mph and feel for a shudder or vibration (judder), plus harsh or delayed low-gear shifts. Walk away from a van that does it. The fix can be a transmission.
- ☐ Cold-start the engine and listen for a knocking or ticking from the bottom end, the classic rod-bearing symptom on 2018–2019 vans. Any knock means the recall inspection is overdue.
- ☐ Cycle both power sliding doors fully open and closed several times, from the dash buttons, key fob, and handles. Doors that hesitate, re-open, or don't latch firmly are a known weak point.
- ☐ On 2018–2022 EX-L/Touring/Elite with rear entertainment: turn on the rear screen and CabinWatch and leave them running during the test drive. Black screens, endless 'Loading', or reboots point to the known MOST-bus connector fault. (The 2025 refresh replaced this system.)
- ☐ Peel back the rubber dust boots on the rear shocks (or look for oil streaks down the shock bodies). The tops rust through and leak, commonly by 50k–80k miles, especially in salt states.
- ☐ At a stop with auto idle-stop active, confirm the engine restarts instantly when you lift off the brake. Slow restarts or no-restarts are a documented, NHTSA-investigated fault.

## Common Honda Odyssey problems & repair costs

### 9-speed (ZF 9HP) transmission judder and harsh shifting

$400–$8,000

transmission severe 2018–2019 (LX, EX, EX-L) ~20k–60k mi

**Symptoms:** Shudder or vibration at steady light throttle (torque-converter judder), rough or delayed 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, clunky downshifts, hesitation pulling into traffic. CarComplaints' top 2018 Odyssey problem is outright transmission failure, averaging about $7,000 at 43,000 miles.

**Fix:** Start cheap: a transmission fluid change plus the latest software often calms the judder, because the lock-up-clutch shudder is tied to degraded fluid. Vans that keep juddering or shift harshly after that can need a valve body or a full transmission. That's the $5,000–$8,000 end. A class action covers 2018–2019 Odysseys for exactly these symptoms. The 10-speed (Touring/Elite 2018–2019, all trims 2020+) does not share this problem.

### Connecting-rod-bearing wear / engine seizure risk (recall 23V-751)

$0–$10,000

engine safety 2018–2019 (recall); 2018–2020 (open NHTSA probe) ~any

**Symptoms:** Abnormal knocking or ticking from the engine, sometimes followed by loss of power; the end state is a seized engine. Root cause is crankshafts machined with improper rod-journal dimensions, which grind down the rod bearings.

**Fix:** This is a formal NHTSA safety recall (23V-751, November 2023) covering 2018–2019 Odysseys among other Honda/Acura V6 models. Dealers inspect and, if needed, repair or replace the engine free. The $0 figure assumes the recall does its job; the high figure is what an out-of-scope engine replacement costs if a seizure happens on a van that never went in. The story didn't end with the recall: NHTSA's follow-up recall query (RQ24-013) found rod-bearing failures on vehicles OUTSIDE the recall's scope, so in August 2025 it opened a new preliminary evaluation (PE25-008) covering about 1.4 million Honda/Acura J35 V6 vehicles, including 2018–2020 Odysseys, with 414 rod-bearing complaints and over 3,000 documented J-series engine failures in the probe record. No expanded recall yet as of mid-2026. Check the VIN before buying, and treat any bottom-end knock on a 2018–2020 van as disqualifying.

### Rear entertainment / CabinWatch screens go black (MOST-bus fault)

$150–$1,500

electrical moderate 2018–2022 (worst 2018–2020) ~20k–80k mi

**Symptoms:** The rear overhead screen flickers, sticks on 'Loading', or goes black entirely; CabinWatch throws 'Camera Failure'; symptoms come and go before failing for good. Root cause is poor connections in the MOST fiber-optic bus that links the infotainment modules. A flaky CabinWatch camera can reboot the rear module and take the screen with it.

**Fix:** Honda issued TSBs (20-049, 21-012) that install improved FAKRA connectors and relieve harness stress, and extended the warranty on these components to 5 years/60k miles on many vans. Out of warranty, the connector repair itself is cheap; a dead rear-entertainment control unit or screen is the four-figure end. This one drew its own class action. The 2025 refresh replaced the whole stack, a 9-inch head unit with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto and a new 12.8-inch rear screen on Touring, so this specific fault stays a 2018–2022 problem; the new system has scattered owner reports of flicker and CarPlay dropouts but no campaign so far.

### Power sliding door won't latch / opens while driving (recall)

$0–$900

body safety 2018–2019 ~any

**Symptoms:** A power sliding door that doesn't latch securely, sticks, re-opens on its own, or in the recall's worst case slides open while the van is moving, without any warning chime or dash light.

**Fix:** Honda recalled about 107,000 2018–2019 Odysseys in late 2018 because sticking components in the rear latch assembly could stop the door from latching; dealers replace both rear latch assemblies free. Honda logged 3,800+ warranty claims before the recall, so confirm it was done by VIN. Outside the recall, sliding-door actuator/cable wear is ordinary minivan aging. That's the paid end of the range.

### Side airbags can deploy over potholes (recall 26V-227)

$0–$0

airbags safety 2018–2022 ~any

**Symptoms:** Second- and third-row side and side-curtain airbags deploy without a crash and with no warning, typically triggered by a pothole, speed bump, or road debris. Honda counted 130 warranty claims and 25 injury reports before recalling.

**Fix:** Free recall fix. A software error in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) control unit set the side-airbag deployment thresholds too sensitive, so about 440,800 2018–2022 Odysseys were recalled in April 2026 (NHTSA 26V-227); dealers reprogram the SRS ECU, or replace it if it can't take the update. This recall closed the NHTSA defect investigation that had been running since late 2025. Separately, recall 26V-332 (May 2026), an expansion of 24V-064, replaces front-passenger seat-weight sensors that can crack and short, and it reaches Odysseys across the generation including 2025–2026 vans. Both are free and both are VIN-lookup items before you buy.

### Rear shocks rust through and leak

$250–$650

suspension moderate 2018–2025 (documented) ~50k–80k mi

**Symptoms:** Sudden bouncy, floaty ride at the back; clunking over bumps; oil streaks down the rear shock bodies. The top inch of the shock body under the rubber dust boot was left unpainted, so it corrodes through, worst in salt states.

**Fix:** Replace both rear shocks as a pair. Parts are cheap ($60–$120 each for quality aftermarket) and it's a straightforward bolt-on job. See the DIY below. No recall exists despite years of owner complaints, so out of warranty this is on you.

### Auto idle-stop fails to restart the engine

$0–$1,200

electrical moderate 2018–2026 (NHTSA investigation scope: 2018–2025) ~any, reported on nearly-new vans

**Symptoms:** Engine shuts off at a light via auto idle-stop, then won't restart when you lift off the brake, sometimes needing a second push of the start button while traffic waits, and in the worst reports a jump start. Often worse with a weak 12V battery, hot weather, or A/C load.

**Fix:** Honda's two-stage remedy (TSBs 23-008 / 23-009, January 2023) is a fuel-injection software update, then starter assembly, relay, or valve-adjustment work if the fault persists, with a 10-year/unlimited-mile warranty extension on vans that needed the hardware. In March 2025 NHTSA upgraded its probe to a formal engineering analysis (EA25-004) covering about 2.2 million Honda/Acura vehicles including 2018–2025 Odysseys, citing 1,348 complaints, 4 crashes, and 2 injuries. It specifically noted that many owners report the failure returning AFTER Honda's campaign repairs. The 2025 refresh didn't fix it: the 2025 Odyssey has logged 268 NHTSA complaints, dominated by electrical (89) and engine (74) reports that are mostly this exact no-restart fault, versus 82 total on the 2024. Early 2026-model complaints repeat the theme. Still no recall as of mid-2026. A healthy 12V battery matters here; out-of-extension starter work is the four-figure end.

Sources: [Kehoe Law Firm: Honda auto idle stop investigation expands (EA25-004)](https://kehoelawfirm.com/honda-auto-idle-stop-investigation-expands/), [LiveNOW/FOX: 2.2 million Honda vehicles under investigation for engine restart failure](https://www.livenowfox.com/news/honda-vehicles-engine-restart-issue-investigation-march-2025), [NHTSA complaint data: 2025 Honda Odyssey (ODI database)](https://api.nhtsa.gov/complaints/complaintsByVehicle?make=honda&model=odyssey&modelYear=2025), [Lemon Law Help: Honda idle-stop engine defect overview](https://lemonlawhelp.com/blog/honda-idle-stop-engine-defect-lawsuit/), [Odyclub forum: auto idle stop TSBs](https://www.odyclub.com/threads/auto-idle-stop-tsbs.371814/)

A 2020+ Odyssey costs about what you'd hope a Honda minivan costs to run: oil, brakes, tires (it's a heavy van; expect tires every 40–50k), and the rear shocks noted above. The J35 V6 is a proven engine with a timing belt, so budget roughly $1,000–$1,400 for the belt/water-pump service around 100k miles. That's normal, not a defect. The money risk concentrates in 2018–2019: a juddering 9-speed that resists the cheap fluid-and-software fix is a $5,000–$8,000 problem, and an unperformed rod-bearing recall is worse. Two Denso fuel-pump recalls also touched these vans (21V-215 on 2019 models, 23V-858), and 2026 added two free airbag campaigns: the side-airbag software reflash on 2018–2022 (26V-227) and the seat-weight-sensor replacement that reaches even 2025–2026 vans (26V-332). All free fixes, just verify they happened. Check every recall by VIN before you spend a dollar on anything else.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Honda Odyssey problems (DIY)

### Replace both rear shock absorbers

moderate 1.5–2.5 hrs saves ~$150–$350

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands, Socket set (14–17mm) + ratchet, Breaker bar, Torque wrench, Penetrating oil (the bolts will be rusty on the vans that need this job)

- Raise the rear of the van, support it on jack stands, and remove the rear wheels.
- Soak the upper and lower shock bolts with penetrating oil. On a van whose shocks rusted through, the hardware is rusty too.
- Support the lower control arm with the floor jack, then remove the lower shock bolt and the upper mounting bolts.
- Swap over any dust boot/hardware the new shock needs, then install it, hand-starting all bolts before tightening.
- Torque the lower bolt with the suspension loaded (jack holding the arm at ride height), not hanging.
- Repeat on the other side, always replacing rear shocks as a pair, then refit the wheels and test drive.

### Cabin & engine air filter change

easy 20 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** None (hands only; a flathead helps with airbox clips)

- Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to release the stops, and swing it down to expose the cabin filter cover.
- Slide out the old cabin filter and insert the new one with the airflow arrow pointing the same direction as the old one.
- For the engine filter, release the airbox lid clips, lift the lid, and swap the panel filter.
- Re-clip the lid and reset the glovebox. Done. This is the easiest money you'll ever not give a dealer.

### Replace the 12V battery and clean the terminals

easy 30–45 min saves ~$50–$150

**Tools:** 10mm wrench or socket, Battery terminal brush, Memory saver (optional but avoids re-learning radio/window settings)

- This van punishes a weak or loosely connected battery: Honda's TCU-reboot recall on 2018–2019 Touring/Elite was triggered by exactly that, and idle-stop misbehavior tracks battery health too.
- With the ignition off, disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive, and remove the hold-down bracket.
- Lift out the old battery, clean both cable clamps to bright metal with the terminal brush, and set in the new battery (match the group size printed on the old one).
- Reconnect positive first, then negative, and torque the clamps snug, since a loose terminal is the failure mode here. Then refit the hold-down.
- Drive it; auto idle-stop may take a few drive cycles to re-enable while the system relearns battery state.

## The short version

The 5th-gen Odyssey, 2018 through today and still current for 2026, is really two different vans wearing the same body. The **2018–2019** vans gave this generation its reputation for trouble: LX, EX and EX-L trims got a ZF 9-speed transmission that judders and shifts harshly, badly enough to draw a class action, with the worst cases needing a $7,000 transmission. Those same years are covered by a connecting-rod-bearing recall that can otherwise end in a seized engine, plus a recall for sliding doors that could open while driving.

From **2020**, Honda put its own 10-speed automatic in every trim, and the generation settles down into what an Odyssey is supposed to be: a durable, family-hauling appliance built around the proven J35 V6. A **2025 refresh** restyled the nose and tail, swapped in a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay, renamed Sport to Sport-L and dropped the base trim. But the V6 and 10-speed carried over untouched, and 2026 is a straight carryover.

## What that means when you’re shopping

A **2021 or 2022** is the sweet spot: post-facelift, 10-speed everywhere, past the early recall churn, and 2022 is the year of this generation Consumer Reports has rated above average for reliability. Buy on condition and history like any used car.

A **2018–2019** can still be a deal, because the market knows all of this and prices them accordingly. But the burden of proof is on the van: every recall closed by VIN (engine rod bearings, fuel pump, door latches, TCU software, and now the 2026 side-airbag reflash), and a long test drive holding light throttle at 30–45 mph feeling for the 9-speed’s telltale shudder. A van that judders is a van you skip. The cheap fix doesn’t always take.

A **2025–2026** buys you the refresh and a full warranty, not a cleaner record: the 2025 has already logged 268 NHTSA complaints, more than three times the 2024’s total, and the bulk of them are the same auto idle-stop no-restart fault the older vans have. Nothing mechanical changed, so pay for the new van because you want a new van, not because you think the refresh fixed anything.

## What breaks on all of them

Whole-generation stuff is milder: rear shocks whose unpainted tops rust through and leak by 50k–80k miles (cheap, easy DIY), rear-entertainment and CabinWatch screens on 2018–2022 vans that black out from a known connector fault (TSB’d and warranty-extended), and an auto idle-stop system that sometimes won’t restart the engine at a light, a fault NHTSA upgraded to a formal engineering analysis (EA25-004) in March 2025 covering 2018–2025 vans, with complaints continuing on the refreshed ones. Keep a healthy 12V battery in it; several of this van’s electrical gremlins trace back to weak or loose batteries.

2026 also brought two free airbag campaigns worth knowing: a software reflash on 2018–2022 vans whose side airbags could deploy over a pothole (26V-227, ~440,800 vans, 25 injuries reported), and a seat-weight-sensor replacement (26V-332) that reaches vans across the generation, 2025–2026 included. Free fixes. Just make sure they happened on the van you’re looking at.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall and complaint records, Honda’s own recall statements and TSBs, CarComplaints data, and owner reporting on OdyClub, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Misleading

### [Is the "$1 Japanese oil trick" that stops engine wear forever real?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-japanese-oil-trick-mos2-engine-wear/)

The 'Japanese oil trick' is almost certainly MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), a real industrial friction modifier. It is German, not Japanese (Liqui Moly popularized it), sold openly at every parts store for $15-20, has real but modest measured friction benefits, and was never buried by anyone.

Outdated

### [Does a "$1 mineral" really double car battery life? The Epsom-salt reality.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-mineral-doubles-battery-life-myth/)

The mineral is Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). It was a real desulfation hack for serviceable flooded-cell batteries 40+ years ago. It does not work on modern sealed AGM or EFB batteries, and trying it on yours will void the warranty without helping the battery.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Honda Odyssey years should I avoid?

2018 and 2019. Those two years combine the troublesome ZF 9-speed transmission (LX/EX/EX-L), the connecting-rod-bearing engine recall, and the sliding-door latch recall. None of it is automatically disqualifying, and recalls are free fixes. But an early van demands VIN checks and a careful test drive that a 2021+ van simply doesn't.

### Is the Odyssey's 9-speed transmission really that bad?

It's the weak point of the generation. The ZF 9HP in 2018–2019 LX/EX/EX-L vans judders at light throttle and shifts harshly enough that owners filed a class action, and CarComplaints' costliest 2018 Odyssey problem is transmission failure at around $7,000. A fluid change and software update fix many of them; the ones that don't respond can need a transmission. The 10-speed used on 2018–2019 Touring/Elite and every trim from 2020 has no such record.

### How do I check if the engine recall was done on a van I'm buying?

Put the VIN into Honda's recall lookup or NHTSA's recall search. The connecting-rod-bearing recall (NHTSA 23V-751) covers 2018–2019 Odysseys; dealers inspect the engine and repair or replace it free if it's affected. While you're there, confirm the fuel-pump recalls (21V-215 on 2019 vans, 23V-858), the door-latch recall, and the two 2026 airbag campaigns are closed too: the side-airbag software recall (26V-227, 2018–2022) and the seat-weight-sensor recall (26V-332, which reaches vans through 2026). Never take a seller's word for it.

### What changed on the 2025 Honda Odyssey refresh?

Styling and tech, not mechanicals. The 2025 refresh brought a revised nose and tail, new wheels, a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (replacing the old 8-inch wired unit), a 7-inch instrument display, and a 12.8-inch rear entertainment screen on Touring. The trim ladder shrank to EX-L, Sport-L, Touring, and Elite. The base trim was dropped, so the entry price rose. The 280-hp V6 and 10-speed automatic carried over unchanged, and 2026 is a straight carryover with a small price bump.

### Does the new Odyssey still have the auto idle-stop problem?

The complaints say yes. NHTSA's engineering analysis (EA25-004, opened March 2025) covers 2018–2025 Odysseys among 2.2 million Honda/Acura vehicles, and the refreshed 2025 model has already logged 268 NHTSA complaints versus 82 on the 2024, most of them the familiar no-restart-at-a-light fault. There's no recall yet, so a new van's protection is its factory warranty plus Honda's TSB fixes. You can also simply switch idle-stop off each drive, which is what many owners do.

### How many miles will a 5th-gen Odyssey last?

The J35 V6 is one of Honda's most proven engines, and 200,000–250,000 miles is realistic with routine maintenance, including the timing-belt service around 100k. The engine generally isn't what retires these vans; neglect, an unresolved early-transmission problem, or accident damage is.

### Why does the rear entertainment screen keep going black?

Known fault. Poor connections in the MOST fiber-optic bus that links the infotainment modules cause the rear screen and CabinWatch camera to reboot or die. Honda issued TSBs (20-049, 21-012) with improved connectors and extended the warranty to 5 years/60k miles on many vans. If yours is out of warranty, the connector fix is cheap; a dead rear module is not, so diagnose before you buy a screen.
