# Honda Pilot 2016–2022 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

The CarCaseFile editorial team · filed 07-16-2026 · updated 09-22-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/honda-pilot-2016-2022/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every oil service (Maintenance Minder, no fixed factory mileage)

### Engine oil and filter (Maintenance Minder decides)

$140–$175 DIY-realistic

Honda's Maintenance Minder sets this, not a fixed mileage, with a 10,000-mile ceiling and a once-a-year minimum. Honda prints no separate severe oil number. Honda says the Minder works from engine operating conditions, which its press material lists as oil and coolant temperature along with engine speed, so change it when the display asks. Every 2016-2022 Pilot takes 0W-20, 5.7 quarts with the filter.

On this generation

- Dealer and chain-shop guides for this Pilot print 7,500 miles as the oil interval. That number is theirs, not Honda's. A windshield sticker at 7,500 is a shop's suggestion, and the Minder display is the factory call.
- Reset the Minder yourself after an oil change done anywhere but a dealer. Honda warns that skipping the reset makes the system show incorrect maintenance intervals for everything it tracks.

## 7,500 mi (AWD only, severe-schedule first change)

### Rear differential fluid (AWD only, severe-schedule default)

$130–$190 Shop job

Honda's own footnote: if you regularly tow or drive mountain roads at very low speed, change it at 7,500 miles, then every 15,000. That is the severe default here, so by 60,000 miles this is the fourth change. Honda's trigger is towing and slow mountain driving, not short trips. Without either, Maintenance Minder code 6 calls it. Use Honda DPSF-II, 1.92 quarts. Front-drive Pilots skip this item.

## 15,000 mi

### Engine air filter (severe-schedule default)

$65–$90 DIY-realistic

Honda's footnote says replace it every 15,000 miles if you drive in dusty conditions, and that is the severe default here. On gravel or dirt roads that makes 60,000 miles the fourth filter, not the first. On clean pavement the filter waits for Maintenance Minder code 2, which also covers the cabin filter and a drive belt inspection.

### Cabin air filter (severe-schedule default)

$75–$100 DIY-realistic

Honda calls this the dust and pollen filter. Its footnote says replace it every 15,000 miles if you drive mostly in urban areas with heavy industrial or diesel soot. That is the severe default here. Otherwise it rides along with Maintenance Minder code 2.

## 30,000-60,000 mi (Maintenance Minder code 3)

### Automatic transmission fluid, plus transfer fluid where equipped (Maintenance Minder code 3)

$155–$320 Shop job

Honda prints no mileage for this and no severe footnote on the code 3 row. The Minder calls it, and dealer and chain guides place it between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. The 6-speed takes Honda ATF DW-1, 3.3 quarts per change. The 9-speed takes ATF Type 3.1, 3.5 quarts. Cars with a transfer assembly also get HGO-1 there. Honda's 2017-2022 manuals say not to check or change the ATF yourself.

On this generation

- Know which transmission you have before a shop pours anything. The shift lever cars are the 6-speed on DW-1, the push-button gear selector cars are the 9-speed on Type 3.1. Honda's manual says not to mix either one with other fluids. Every 2021-2022 Pilot is a 9-speed.

## 60,000 mi

### Timing belt and water pump inspection (severe-schedule default)

$1,150–$1,450 Shop job

The J35 turns its cams with a toothed belt, not a chain. Honda's footnote says replace it every 60,000 miles if you regularly drive in heat over 110°F or cold under -20°F. The 2016-2018 books add towing a trailer, the 2019-2022 books drop it. That is the severe default here. Outside those conditions, Maintenance Minder code 4 calls it near Honda's 100,000-mile tune-up.

On this generation

- A 2018 or 2019 Pilot may be in recall 19V-298. A supplier made some timing belts that were not hardened properly, and their teeth can separate. Honda estimated about 1 percent of the recalled cars had one. Dealers check eligibility by VIN, inspect the belt's lot number and replace it free if it is in the suspect range. Run the VIN before paying for a belt job on one of these.

### Front brake pads

$320–$390 DIY-realistic

Wear-based, no factory mileage. Honda has the front and rear brakes inspected at every B service, so you get a pad reading with the oil change. Pad part numbers changed at the 2019 facelift, so order by model year.

### Drive (serpentine) belt

$155–$200 DIY-realistic

Honda sets no replacement mileage for it. Maintenance Minder code 2 inspects it each time the air filter comes due, and it gets replaced on condition. It is a separate belt from the timing belt and a small fraction of that job's cost.

### CV axle boots (inspect), CV axle (replace if a boot has torn)

$150–$1,400 Shop job

Honda inspects the driveshaft boots at every B service, so ask what they found. A torn boot shows as grease splattered around the wheel and suspension, and dirt then gets into the joint. A boot alone costs far less than the axle it protects, so catch it early.

### Wheel alignment

$195–$290 Shop job

Not a factory mileage item. Honda's manual says uneven tread wear means have the alignment checked. Worn control-arm bushings let the suspension move out of line, so an alignment on worn bushings will not hold. Check the bushings first if the car keeps chewing tires.

### Tires (and rotation at Maintenance Minder code 1)

$400–$1,600 Shop job

Honda says tires of a different size or construction can make the AWD system, ABS and stability control work incorrectly, and that all four should be replaced at once, or at least in front or rear pairs. Honda's manual sets no tread-depth matching number for the AWD system. Rotate at every Minder code 1, and treat uneven wear as a reason for an alignment check.

## 100,000 mi (Maintenance Minder code 4)

### Spark plugs, timing belt and valve clearance inspection (Maintenance Minder code 4)

$500–$585 Shop job

Honda bills this engine as a 100,000-mile tune-up: new plugs, a new timing belt, a water pump inspection and a valve check, all under Minder code 4. The plugs carry no severe number. The cost shown is plugs only. Add the belt from the 60,000-mile line if it was not done there. Honda also says adjust the valves at any earlier service if they are noisy.

### Control arm bushings

$200–$420 Shop job

Wear-based, no factory interval, and Honda inspects the suspension at every B service. Independent guides put typical wear-out near 100,000 miles, sooner on rough roads. Worn bushings throw the alignment off and wear tires unevenly, so replace them before paying for another alignment.

### Engine mounts (front and rear are electronic active mounts)

$1,150–$1,325 Shop job

No factory interval, replace on condition. The front and rear mounts on every 2016-2022 Pilot are Honda's Active Control Engine Mounts, which cancel the shake when Variable Cylinder Management runs the V6 on three cylinders. They are an electrically driven part, so price the Honda ACM mount, not a plain rubber one.

## 120,000 mi or 10 years (Maintenance Minder code 5)

### Engine coolant (Maintenance Minder code 5)

$100–$150 Shop job

Honda prints no mileage for the coolant change. It is Maintenance Minder code 5, and the car decides. Dealer and chain guides place the first change near 120,000 miles or 10 years, which the earliest 2016 cars have now reached by age, so check the records. Use Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, mixed 50/50 with distilled water.

## Every 3 years (any mileage)

### Brake fluid

$80–$120 Shop job

Honda's rule is a calendar one. The 2016-2018 books say every 3 years regardless of the Minder. From 2019 the Minder carries a brake fluid code, item 7, and Honda still says change it at 3 years if the code has not appeared. Honda publishes no separate severe number for it. Use Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### 12-volt battery

$270–$370 DIY-realistic

Batteries fail on a calendar. They typically last 3 to 5 years, so load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 at any mileage. Pilots with Auto Idle-stop carry an AGM battery built for it, and Honda says replace it with the specified type. Match the group size and cold-cranking amps from the parts card.

On this generation

- Do not put a plain flooded battery in an idle-stop Pilot. Honda's manual says a battery other than the specified type can shorten battery life and stop Auto Idle-stop from working. HondaPartsNow's genuine-parts listing shows the H6 AGM for 2016-2025 Pilots.
