# Honda Pilot 2023–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls first. Four recalls matter on this generation: FI-ECU stall software (25V-031, 2023–2025), brake pedal pivot pin (25V-391, 2023–2025), fuel filler neck (24V-900, 2023–2025), and a tiny 519-car steering rack batch (23V-735, 2023–2024). All must show completed.

Check 02

On the test drive, make sudden throttle changes: lift off, then get back on it. Hesitation, a check-engine light, or a stumble is the classic sign the 25V-031 FI-ECU reflash was never done.

Check 03

Press the brake pedal hard and feel for any sideways shift or looseness in the pedal itself. The 25V-391 pivot-pin defect lets the pedal move out of position. If in doubt, have a dealer inspect it (free under the recall).

Check 04

After a fill-up, sniff around the fuel door and rear underbody. Raw fuel smell is the 24V-900 fuel-filler-neck symptom.

Check 05

Let the auto idle-stop cycle at a stop several times and confirm instant restarts. The no-restart complaint pattern that hit the 3rd gen is under an open NHTSA investigation (EA25004) that includes 2023–2025 Pilots.

Check 06

Drive it in stop-and-go and judge the 10-speed at parking-lot speeds. Some owners report jerky or hesitant low-speed shifts; a dealer software update usually helps. Hard 4–5 shifts or a blinking D indicator on the test drive means walk or negotiate.

Check 07

Check the 12V battery date code and ask about battery history. Early cars logged dead batteries and warning-light storms (ABS/VSA/power-steering messages) at very low mileage, often a weak battery or wheel-speed sensor, but you want it sorted before purchase.

Check 08

On a 2026: confirm the rear subframe bolt recall (26V-424, early-2026 builds only) was completed.

Walk-away signals

None outright. Every documented problem has a free fix. The 2023 first-model-year just needs the most recall homework and has the most electrical gripes.
