Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Run the VIN at a Hyundai dealer (or hyundaiusa.com/recalls): confirm Campaign 953 (KSDS knock-sensor software) is completed, and that no engine campaign is open. The October 2019 campaign update explicitly added 2019 Sonatas.

Check 02

Check the oil level cold on the dipstick, then ask the seller directly how much oil it uses between changes. A 2.4 that's a quart or more low with no visible leak is the documented consumption pattern. Walk or price it in.

Check 03

Cold-start the engine and listen for a deep rhythmic knock from the bottom end. Any knock on a Theta II is a stop-the-deal finding until inspected. That's the failure the lifetime warranty exists for.

Check 04

Ask about any episodes of reduced power, hard starting, or a crank/no-start. That's the low-pressure fuel pump pattern (DTC P1233). It's covered by Hyundai's 15-year/150,000-mile warranty extension, but a car with symptoms should see a dealer before money changes hands.

Check 05

On an Eco, drive it in stop-and-go traffic: creep, roll into throttle from 5 mph, do a few uphill starts. Judder or hesitation is the known dry-DCT behavior. Decide if you can live with it, because software updates reduce it but don't cure it.

Check 06

On 2018 cars (and 2016–2018 Hybrids), confirm the trunk-latch recall (208 / NHTSA 21V-619) shows closed on the VIN report.

Check 07

On a Plug-in Hybrid, confirm recall 175 (NHTSA 18V-166, voltage-protection device that can cut power in EV mode) was performed.

Check 08

Get service records showing oil changes at 5,000-mile intervals or better. On a Theta II, paperwork is worth money, because settlement claims turn on maintenance documentation.

Walk-away signals
