# Jeep Grand Cherokee 2005–2010 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The WK Grand Cherokee is a genuinely capable, cheap-to-buy SUV whose fate depends almost entirely on which engine is under the hood and whether two ignition recalls were done. The 4.7 V8 drops valve seats if it ever overheated, the 5.7 Hemi eats MDS lifters and camshafts around 100k, and 2005–2007 cars were recalled for an ignition switch that can shut the engine off while driving. A sorted one is a lot of truck for the money.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2005–2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Buy one only with its history in hand. The WK is cheap, comfortable, and legitimately capable off-road, but the two V8s carry expensive known failure modes: a 4.7 that has ever overheated can drop a valve seat and destroy the engine, and a 5.7 Hemi is living on borrowed time past 100k if the MDS lifters haven't been addressed. Confirm the ignition-switch/WIN recalls are done by VIN before anything else. The engine shutting off at speed is not a quirk you live with. A 2009–2010 car with documented maintenance is the best version of this truck; a cheap early one with no records is a parts lottery.

- ☐ Run the VIN with a Jeep dealer or NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the ignition-switch recall (P41 / NHTSA 14V-438, 2005–2007) or WIN module recall (P57 / 14V-567; 10V-200 for 2010) was completed.
- ☐ On a 5.7 Hemi: listen for ticking at idle when warm and check for misfire codes (P0300-series). A tick plus a misfire on one cylinder is the classic failing-MDS-lifter signature.
- ☐ On a 4.7: verify the cooling system works perfectly and ask directly whether it has ever overheated. Check the oil filler for sludge. This engine punishes neglect.
- ☐ Cold-start test drive: a long pause before Drive or Reverse engages on a 545RFE car points to the known torque-converter drain-back issue.
- ☐ On 4WD models, inspect the rear CV boot on the front driveshaft for cracks or slung grease, and listen for driveline rumble or vibration at speed.
- ☐ Cycle the HVAC through hot, cold, and every vent position and listen for clicking behind the dash. Blend door actuators are a known weak point, and the driver's side is buried.
- ☐ Test every window, the tailgate glass, and all interior electronics; 2005–2006 cars in particular logged heavy electrical-system complaint volume with NHTSA.

Known faults

## Common Jeep Grand Cherokee problems & repair costs

### Ignition switch / WIN module shuts the engine off while driving

$0–$400

electrical safety 2005–2010

**Symptoms:** Engine cuts out when the driver's knee bumps the key, or the ignition springs from RUN toward ACC on its own. Power steering assist, power brakes, and airbags can be lost with it. Covered by recall P41 / NHTSA 14V-438 (ignition switch, 2005–2007) and the WIN wireless-ignition-module recalls (P57 / 14V-567; 10V-200 for 2010).

**Fix:** Free under recall. A dealer replaces the ignition switch and lock cylinder or the WIN module. Verify completion by VIN before buying; out-of-pocket replacement of a WIN module runs a few hundred dollars if a non-recall unit fails later.

### 5.7 Hemi MDS lifter and camshaft failure ('Hemi tick')

$2,500–$5,000

engine severe 2005–2010 (5.7L only) ~90k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** A metallic tick at idle that doesn't quiet down when warm, progressing to a persistent misfire (P0300-series codes) on one or two cylinders. The MDS cylinder-deactivation lifters lose their roller bearings and wipe the cam lobe.

**Fix:** Camshaft plus a full set of lifters, done in-chassis at an independent shop; if metal circulated, the price climbs toward a replacement engine. Many owners upgrade to non-MDS lifters during the repair so it doesn't happen twice.

### 4.7 V8 dropped valve seat / overheating intolerance

$2,500–$5,500

engine severe 2005–2010 (4.7L only)

**Symptoms:** Often no warning: sudden loud knocking, dead cylinder, bent valve. The hardened valve seats in the aluminum heads work loose after an overheat, sometimes long after, and drop into the cylinder. The engine also sludges up when oil changes are skipped.

**Fix:** Cylinder head replacement at minimum; a dropped seat usually damages the piston and valve, making a used or reman engine the realistic fix. Prevention is boring but real: keep the cooling system perfect and never drive it hot.

### 545RFE transmission shudder, cold delayed engagement, valve-body wear

$300–$3,500

transmission moderate 2005–2010 (4.7 and 5.7) ~80k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Shudder around 35–45 mph under light throttle (torque converter clutch), a long pause before Drive or Reverse engages after sitting overnight (fluid drain-back: Chrysler TSB 21-015-05 covers 2005–2006), and harsh or delayed 3-4 / 4-5 shifts from valve-body wear.

**Fix:** The cold-engagement issue is fixed with an updated cooler return filter during a normal service. Shudder that persists after fresh fluid usually means a torque converter; valve-body work or a rebuilt unit sits at the top of the range.

Sources: [Transmission Repair Cost Guide: Jeep 545RFE problems](https://www.transmissionrepaircostguide.com/jeep-cherokee-transmission-problems/), [JeepForum: 545RFE transmission shudder](https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/545rfe-transmission-shudder.4418143/)

### Front driveshaft CV joint failure (4WD)

$300–$900

drivetrain moderate 2005–2010 (4WD models) ~80k–140k mi

**Symptoms:** Vibration or rumble at highway speed, grinding or popping from up front. The rubber boot on the front driveshaft's rear CV joint splits, slings its grease, and the joint grinds itself apart. A worn front-differential bushing adds wobble to the mix.

**Fix:** Catch it early and it's a boot-and-grease kit or a CV joint. Once it's been run dry, a replacement front driveshaft is the fix. Aftermarket units are reasonable.

Sources: [JeepForum: driveline noise, front driveshaft](https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/driveline-noise-front-driveshaft.4331647/), [Quadratec: WK 2005–2010 driveshafts](https://www.quadratec.com/vehicle/2005-2010-grand-cherokee-wk/driveline/drive-shafts)

### HVAC blend door actuator failure

$100–$1,400

hvac minor 2005–2010

**Symptoms:** Rhythmic clicking from behind the dash (sometimes even after shutoff), air stuck on hot or cold, or airflow stuck on one set of vents. The small plastic gears inside the actuators strip.

**Fix:** The actuator itself is a cheap part. The passenger-side unit is reachable behind the glovebox and is a reasonable DIY; the driver's-side and mode-door units can require major dash disassembly at a shop, which is where the big numbers come from.

Sources: [JeepForum: infamous blend door clicking noise](https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/infamous-blend-door-clicking-noise.3623914/), [Go-Parts: 2005–2010 Grand Cherokee blend door & evaporator failures](https://www.go-parts.com/garage/a-c-evaporator-housing-jeep-grand-cherokee-jeep-commander-2005-2010)

Plan on this being a cheap truck with occasional expensive weeks. Routine parts are plentiful and inexpensive, fuel is the constant tax (the V8s live in the mid-teens mpg), and normal wear items are straightforward. The budget-breakers are engine-specific: a Hemi lifter job or a 4.7 valve-seat event runs $2,500–$5,000+, and a tired 545RFE adds up fast. A WK that's had its recalls done, its cooling system maintained, and its transmission serviced is reasonable to own; the ones that hurt are the neglected $6,000 examples.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Jeep Grand Cherokee problems (DIY)

### Replace passenger-side blend door actuator

moderate 1–2 hrs saves ~$150–$300

**Tools:** Phillips and flat screwdrivers, 8mm socket or nut driver, Flashlight

- Drop the glovebox by squeezing its side stops, and remove the lower dash panel on the passenger side.
- Locate the clicking actuator on the HVAC housing and unplug its electrical connector.
- Remove the two or three small screws holding the actuator and pull it off the door shaft.
- Move the blend door by hand to confirm it swings freely. A jammed door will kill the new actuator too.
- Index the new actuator onto the shaft, screw it down, plug it in, and cycle the temperature from full hot to full cold to verify.

Parts

### 545RFE transmission service (pan drop + both filters)

moderate 2–3 hrs saves ~$150–$350

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands or ramps, Socket set + torque wrench, Large drain pan, ATF+4 fluid (6–7 quarts for a pan service)

- Warm the transmission, then support the vehicle safely and place a wide drain pan under the transmission pan.
- Loosen the pan bolts, drain, and drop the pan; clean the pan and magnet.
- Replace the main spin-on style filter AND the cooler return filter. The updated return filter is the fix for cold delayed engagement.
- Reinstall the pan with a new gasket and torque the bolts evenly.
- Refill with ATF+4 only, then check the level per the dipstick procedure with the fluid hot and in Neutral.

### Spark plugs on the 5.7 Hemi (16 plugs)

moderate 2–3 hrs saves ~$200–$400

**Tools:** 5/8" spark plug socket + extensions, Ratchet + torque wrench, 10mm socket (coil bolts), Dielectric grease

- Work on a cold engine. Remove the engine cover and unplug the first coil pack.
- Unbolt the coil. Each coil on the Hemi covers TWO plugs, so both come out from under it.
- Blow debris out of the plug wells, then remove and replace both plugs, torqued to spec (don't overtighten into the aluminum heads).
- Dab dielectric grease in the coil boots, reinstall the coil, and repeat across all eight coils / sixteen plugs.
- Start it and confirm smooth idle with no misfire codes.

## The short version

The 2005–2010 Grand Cherokee (the WK) is a lot of comfortable, capable SUV for very little money, and the used-market price reflects real risk. Which engine you pick decides most of your ownership story. The **5.7 Hemi** is strong but its MDS cylinder-deactivation lifters can wipe out the camshaft around 100k miles, the famous “Hemi tick” that turns into a $2,500–$5,000 repair. The **4.7 V8** hides a different trap: if it has ever overheated, the valve seats can drop out of the heads and destroy the engine, sometimes months later. The **3.7 V6** is slow but the least dramatic.

Layered over all of it: federal recalls for an ignition switch (2005–2007) and WIN ignition module (2008–2010) that could shut the engine off while driving, killing power steering and brake assist. Those fixes are free forever. Verify them by VIN before you even test drive.

## Which engine you buy matters most

If you want a WK, the pecking order is roughly: a Hemi that’s already had a cam-and-lifter job with non-MDS lifters, then a healthy 3.7 for light duty, then a documented-cooling-system 4.7, then everything else. The SRT8’s 6.1 skips the MDS problem entirely but assume it was driven like it looks. The 2007–2008 CRD diesel is the enthusiast pick, with great torque and real economy, but it’s a Mercedes engine with Mercedes-priced quirks.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Bring a code reader and patience. Listen to a Hemi at warm idle for ticking. Ask a 4.7 seller point-blank about overheating and look for sludge under the oil cap. On a cold test drive, a long pause before the transmission takes Drive is the known 545RFE drain-back issue. Cheap to fix, useful to negotiate with. Check the front driveshaft boot on 4WD trucks, and cycle the HVAC listening for the telltale blend-door clicking. None of these checks take an hour, and together they separate the honest $9,000 truck from the $5,500 gamble.

The generation after this one (2011–2021 WK2) is more refined but brought its own electrical plague (the TIPM). The WK’s problems, at least, are well-mapped and mostly mechanical.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall and complaint data, Chrysler TSB reporting, and owner-forum documentation (JeepForum, JeepGarage, Allpar), then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Misleading

### [Is the "$1 Japanese oil trick" that stops engine wear forever real?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-japanese-oil-trick-mos2-engine-wear/)

The 'Japanese oil trick' is almost certainly MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), a real industrial friction modifier. It is German, not Japanese (Liqui Moly popularized it), sold openly at every parts store for $15-20, has real but modest measured friction benefits, and was never buried by anyone.

Dangerous

### [Is the "$2 liquid that destroys engine sludge forever" real? Our shop-floor verdict.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-engine-sludge-destroyer-liquid/)

An aggressive solvent flush on a high-mileage engine is a textbook way to spin a bearing. The viral 'kitchen-cabinet flush' is folklore that real shops spend money cleaning up after.

Appendix

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Jeep Grand Cherokee WK years should I avoid?

2005–2006 carry the most baggage: highest complaint volume, the worst of the electrical gremlins, and the ignition-switch recall years. 2009–2010 are the most sorted. But on this truck the engine and its history matter more than the model year. A maintained 2006 beats a neglected 2010.

### Is the 5.7 Hemi in these years reliable?

Mostly, with one big exception: the MDS cylinder-deactivation lifters. They can wipe out the camshaft, typically somewhere past 90k miles, and the repair runs $2,500–$5,000. A warm-idle tick plus a misfire code is the warning sign. A Hemi that's already had a cam-and-lifter job with non-MDS lifters is arguably the safest engine in the lineup.

### How do I check whether the ignition recall was done?

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or have any Jeep dealer check it. The 2005–2007 ignition-switch recall (P41 / 14V-438) and the WIN module recalls (P57 / 14V-567; 10V-200 for 2010) are free fixes forever. There's no excuse for buying one with them open.

### How many miles will a WK Grand Cherokee last?

200,000+ miles is realistic if the specific landmines are cleared: the 4.7 never overheats, the Hemi's lifters get addressed, and the transmission gets fluid on schedule. The truck's structure, axles, and transfer cases outlast the engines' weak points.

### Is the 3.0 CRD diesel worth buying?

It's the best-driving engine of the bunch, with strong torque and mid-20s mpg, but it's a two-year-only (2007–2008) Mercedes OM642 with its own known issues (oil cooler seals buried in the engine valley) and fewer shops willing to work on it. Buy one for the right price with service records, not as the cheap option.
