# Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011–2021 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/jeep-grand-cherokee-2011-2021/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every oil change indicator alert (4,000 mi on Jeep's Severe Duty test)

### Engine oil and filter, 3.6L 2011-2013 (oil change indicator)

$151–$174 DIY-realistic

Change it when the indicator says. The 2011 and 2012 books cap it at 8,000 mi or 6 months, the 2013 book at 10,000 mi or 12 months. None of the three prints a Severe Duty mileage, so there is no shorter number to default to. 5W-30 in the 2011-2012 books, 5W-20 in 2013, to MS-6395, 6 qt. RepairPal 2011-2013 rows: $151-$174.

### Engine oil and filter, 3.6L 2014-2021 (Severe Duty default: 4,000 mi)

$152–$175 DIY-realistic

Jeep's Severe Duty test is narrow: 4,000 mi for dusty, off-road use (2014 eighth printing, 2015 book), or mostly idling at low rpm (2016-2021 books). Everyone else follows the indicator, which can call as early as 3,500 mi, never past 10,000 mi or 12 months. 5W-20 in the 2014-2016 books, 0W-20 in 2017-2021, 6 qt. RepairPal 2014-2021: $152-$175.

### Engine oil and filter, 5.7L HEMI (Severe Duty default where the book prints one: 4,000 mi)

$151–$175 DIY-realistic

Same indicator and the same Severe Duty test as the 3.6L, book by book: the 2011-2013 books print no Severe Duty line and 2011-2012 cap it at 8,000 mi or 6 months. Every fluid table from 2011 to 2021 lists 5W-20 to MS-6395. The 2018 and 2019 capacity tables print 0W-20, so read your filler cap. 7 qt. RepairPal: $151-$175.

### Engine oil and filter, 3.0L EcoDiesel (oil change indicator)

DIY-realistic

The 2014 and 2015 diesel supplements print no Severe Duty line: follow the indicator, never past 10,000 mi or 12 months. On B6-B20 biodiesel the cap is 8,000 mi or 6 months and the owner tracks it, because the indicator does not. ACEA C3 5W-30 synthetic low ash, 8 qt. Both books fill the DEF tank at every oil change. ### Engine oil and filter, SRT 6.4L and Trackhawk 6.2L (6,000 mi or 6 months)

DIY-realistic

The 2012 SRT8, 2017 and 2018 SRT books and the SRT section of the 2020 book cap it at 6,000 mi or 6 months, whichever comes first, whatever the indicator shows. Full synthetic 0W-40 (MS-12633 in the 2017, 2018 and 2020 SRT books): 7 qt on the 6.4L, 8.3 qt on the 6.2L. No SRT book was found for 2013-2016, 2019 or 2021.

### Tire rotation

$49–$72 DIY-realistic

Jeep ties rotation to every oil change (every 8,000 mi on the 2011-2012 list, every indicator alert in the 2013-2021 books), and says rotate at the first sign of irregular wear even if that comes sooner. Rotation keeps the four tires wearing alike, which the 4WD system needs: Jeep says a mismatch will damage the transfer case (see the tires item). RepairPal 2011-2021: $49-$72.

## 20,000 mi

### Cabin air filter

$68–$85 DIY-realistic

Every 20,000 mi in the 2013-2021 charts and every 16,000 mi on the 2011-2012 lists. The 2014 and 2015 diesel supplements replace it every 10,000 mi, and the 2017, 2018 and 2020 SRT charts every 24,000 mi. No book prints a separate severe number. It sits behind the glovebox. ### Front and rear axle fluid (inspect; change if you tow or go off-road)

$121–$197 Shop job

Inspect every 20,000 mi (2013-2021 charts; every 24,000 mi on the 2011-2012 lists and the SRT charts). Change it at that visit if the Jeep is used for police, taxi, fleet, off-road or frequent trailer towing; the SRT charts add sustained high-speed driving. Jeep prints no change mileage for anyone else. A rear axle with the electronic limited-slip needs 75W-85 with friction modifier. RepairPal per axle: $121-$197.

## 30,000 mi

### Engine air filter, gas 3.6L, 5.7L and 6.4L

$96–$113 DIY-realistic

Replace every 30,000 mi (2013-2021 charts, and the SRT charts) or 32,000 mi (2011-2012 lists). Jeep's severe rule is an inspection, not a shorter number: inspect it at every oil change in dusty or off-road use (2013-2021) and replace if needed. The 2011-2012 lists inspect it at the off-grid 16,000-mile visits for dusty use. RepairPal 2011-2021: $96-$113.

DIY-realistic

The 2011 and 2012 lists replace the 5.7L's 16 plugs every 32,000 mi. The 2013 chart marks 30,000, 60,000, 100,000, 120,000 and 150,000 mi, with 90,000 left blank as printed. Jeep says the plug interval is mileage only. The 3.6L waits for 96,000-100,000 mi (see that bucket). No book prints a separate severe number. ### Fuel filters, 3.0L EcoDiesel

Shop job

Replace the fuel filters and drain water every 30,000 mi on diesel up to B5, and every 20,000 mi on B6-B20 biodiesel, in the 2014 and 2015 supplements. Both books also replace the diesel's engine air filter every 30,000 mi and its cabin filter every 10,000 mi. The filter must meet a 3-micron rating. No RepairPal fuel-filter price was read, so none is given.

### Transfer case fluid, SRT and Trackhawk

Shop job

The SRT books drain and refill the transfer case every 30,000 mi (2012 SRT8 list, 2017 and 2018 SRT charts, 2020 SRT chart), four times as often as the non-SRT 120,000 mi. No condition is attached, so it is not a severe-only item. No RepairPal transfer-case fluid price was read, so none is given.

Everyone else changes it at 120,000 mi. Use ATF+4 only. This item ends in 2013: the 2014-2021 eight-speed has no change interval (see that item). RepairPal 2011-2013: $186-$220.

### PCV valve

$97–$198 DIY-realistic

Inspect and replace if necessary at 100,000 mi in the 2013-2019 charts; the 2020 and 2021 charts say replace it. 96,000 mi on the 2011-2012 lists, where the 2011 book marks it as recommended but not needed for the emissions warranty. The SRT charts put it at 90,000 mi. RepairPal 2011-2021: $97-$198.

### Engine coolant, 2011-2012 books (5 years or 104,000 mi)

$284–$358 DIY-realistic

In the 2013-2021 books the coolant is the 10-year/150,000-mile formula (see the 150,000 mi bucket). RepairPal 2011-2012: $284-$358.

### Accessory drive belt(s), 3.0L EcoDiesel

$84–$103 DIY-realistic

The 2014 and 2015 diesel supplements replace the accessory drive belt(s) at 100,000 mi. The gas charts differ by book (see the 150,000 mi bucket). RepairPal 2011-2021: $84-$103, rows not split by engine.

## 120,000 mi

### Transfer case fluid, non-SRT (severe-schedule default on 2011-2012: 64,000 mi)

Shop job

The 2013-2021 charts inspect it at 30,000, 60,000, 90,000 and 150,000 mi and change it at 120,000 mi, with no severe line. The 2011-2012 lists inspect at 32,000 and 96,000 mi, change at 128,000 mi, and at 64,000 mi for police, taxi, fleet or frequent trailer towing. Single-speed Quadra-Trac I takes ATF 3353, two-speed Quadra-Trac II takes ATF+4. The 2014-2015 diesel supplements also change it at 120,000 mi.

## 150,000 mi or 10 years

### Engine coolant, 2013-2021 books (10 years or 150,000 mi)

$455–$588 DIY-realistic

Flush and replace at 10 years or 150,000 mi, whichever comes first, in the 2013-2021 charts and the 2014-2015 diesel supplements; the 2017, 2018 and 2020 SRT charts say 120 months if not done at 150,000 mi. No severe number is printed. A 2011 or 2012 car runs on the shorter 5-year clock (100,000 mi bucket). RepairPal 2013-2021: $455-$588.

### Accessory drive belt, gas (replace at 150,000 mi in the 2020-2021 books)

$84–$103 DIY-realistic

Only some books print it. The 2011 list replaces the belt(s) at 120,000 mi; the 2012-2019 charts carry no belt row; the 2020 and 2021 charts replace it at 150,000 mi and inspect the tensioner and pulley then. The SRT charts inspect the belts at 60,000 and 120,000 mi. On a book with no row, replace it on condition: cracks, glazing or squeal. RepairPal 2011-2021: $84-$103.

## No Jeep interval (condition, wear and inspection items)

### Automatic transmission fluid, 2014-2021 eight-speed (no routine change)

Shop job

Every 2014-2021 book says the factory fluid lasts the life of the vehicle and routine fluid and filter changes are not required, unless the fluid is contaminated (with water, say) or the transmission is taken apart. No book prints a severe interval, towing included. The dipstick is gone; a dealer checks the level with special tools. Every 2014-2021 fluid table specifies Mopar ZF 8&9 Speed ATF or equivalent.

### Brake fluid

$85–$125 DIY-realistic

No gas or diesel book from 2011 to 2021 schedules a brake fluid change. The only printed number is in the 2020 book's SRT fluid table: if DOT 4 is used instead of DOT 3, change it every 24 months. The books say to check the level when pads are replaced. Test the fluid at every brake job. RepairPal brake bleed 2011-2021: $85-$125.

### Front brake pads, non-SRT (wear-based)

$371–$485 DIY-realistic

No replacement mileage. Jeep inspects the brake linings every 20,000 mi (2013-2021 charts) and at every oil change in the 2013-2021 books. The 2017 and 2018 SRT books describe a Brembo brake system, and the parts card excludes SRT and Trackhawk pads. RepairPal 2011-2021: $371-$485.

### Shocks and struts, coil or Quadra-Lift air (wear-based)

Shop job

No Jeep interval; the generic wear range is 50,000-100,000 mi. Worn dampers cup the tires on their own, so new tires on worn struts wear out early whatever the alignment says, and new struts need an alignment after. Air-sprung cars add the Quadra-Lift failures in this file's problems list; the 2015 diesel supplement alone asks to clean the rear air springs at every oil change. RepairPal rows here swing from $1,079 to $5,394 by year, so no cost is given.

### CV joints and boots (inspect)

Shop job

Jeep inspects the CV joints every 24,000 mi (2011-2012), every 30,000 mi (2013-2019 charts) and at every oil change in the 2020-2021 books. A torn boot flings grease onto the brakes and lets grit into the joint, so a boot caught early is cheaper than the axle it protects. No RepairPal axle price was read, so none is given.

### Control arm bushings (wear-based)

Shop job

No Jeep interval; Jeep inspects the front suspension and tie rod ends every 20,000 mi (2013-2021 charts). Generic life is 70,000-120,000 mi, less on rough roads, and 8-10 years regardless of miles. Worn bushings let the alignment wander right after it is set, so check them before paying for one. RepairPal control arm rows run $227-$1,337 by year, so budget from a quote.

### Wheel alignment (event-driven)

$159–$233 Shop job

Not a Jeep mileage item. Align after new tires, struts, control arms or tie rods, and check it about once a year; skipping it after suspension work wastes the tires you just bought. RepairPal 2011-2021: $159-$233.

### Tires (matched set on 4WD)

Shop job

Jeep says four-wheel drive depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel, and a difference will damage the transfer case. So a single replacement on a 4WD car has to match the other three, and rotation on schedule keeps them matched. Fit the tire to the use: an all-terrain on a highway Laredo gives up wet grip and tread life for nothing.

### Motor mounts (wear-based)

$418–$788 Shop job

No Jeep interval and no WK2-specific mount weakness verified here. Rubber and hydraulic mounts wear with age and torque, typically 80,000-150,000 mi, sooner on the V8s and in stop-and-go use. A collapsed mount lets the engine move, which loads the other mounts, the exhaust joints and the hoses. Symptoms: a clunk into drive or reverse, vibration at idle in gear. RepairPal 2011-2021: $418-$788.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### Battery (load-test from year 3, replace by year 5)

$549–$659 DIY-realistic

Calendar-based, not mileage. Jeep asks for the battery to be inspected and the terminals cleaned at every oil change. Load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 rather than wait for a no-start. Match the group size and cold-cranking rating on the parts card, and compare warranty terms (free-replacement months versus prorated), which differ by seller. RepairPal 2011-2021: $549-$659.
