Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before anything else. This generation is recall-heavy (a 2023 carries about 20 campaigns). Confirm the steering-column shaft (23V-352), upper ball joint (24V-132) and rear coil-spring work are all done.

Check 02

On the coil springs specifically: the original 2023 recall (23V-413) was superseded by 26V-051 after springs detached AGAIN on repaired cars. Check for the newer campaign by number. A 2023-era repair receipt is not enough.

Check 03

Test-drive for steering play: a knock or free play in the wheel before the front wheels respond was the documented warning sign before intermediate-shaft separation.

Check 04

On a 4xe: demand records for the 25V-741 high-voltage battery remedy, the 25V-576 software update, and (2023–2025 builds) the 25V-766 engine inspection. Then charge it to full and confirm it holds charge and starts. 12V battery drain complaints are common.

Check 05

Sit in the car for ten minutes and work every screen and camera. Uconnect blackouts, frozen startup logos and missing rearview-camera images are documented across 2021 L–2023 cars, with four separate camera-display recalls.

Check 06

Drive it cold and hot through stop-and-go. Harsh 1-2 shifts, delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse, or any gear codes (P0733, P1DA8, P1D92) point at the 850RE D-clutch issue.

Check 07

Check the 12V battery date code and health (H7 AGM on gas models). Electrical is the top complaint category on this generation, and a marginal battery causes phantom faults.

Walk-away signals

2021 L–2023 (steering-shaft, ball-joint and twice-recalled coil-spring campaigns; heaviest complaint years) · Any 4xe without documented completion of the battery-fire recall (25V-741) and its companion campaigns · 2026 (not defective, but the Hurricane four is a first-year engine with no track record)
