# Kia Sorento 2016–2020 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The UM Sorento is a comfortable, well-equipped three-row crossover with an engine-lottery problem. The 2.4L (and 2.0T) Theta II four-cylinders can wear their rod bearings and seize, the defect behind Kia's engine recall on earlier years (NHTSA 17V224000 covers the 2012-2014 Sorento), the KSDS knock-sensor campaign, and a class-action settlement that put a lifetime warranty on 2016–2019 short blocks. Even the normally solid 3.3L V6 had a head-bolt problem in 2016–2017. Buy the right engine and year and it's a lot of family truck for the money.

Buy the V6, ideally a 2018–2020, and the UM Sorento is a genuinely good used family hauler: comfortable, well-equipped, and cheap for what it is. The 2.4L and 2.0T Theta II fours are the gamble. Rod-bearing wear can kill them without much warning, which is why Kia installed knock-sensor software (KSDS) and a class-action settlement extended the short-block warranty to lifetime on 2016–2019 cars that got the update. A Theta II car with the KSDS update done and documentation in hand is a defensible budget buy precisely because of that warranty; a 2020 2.4L has no settlement coverage, and a 2016–2017 V6 needs its head-gasket history checked. Verify the campaign status by VIN before money changes hands.

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Kia Sorento

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/kia-sorento-2016-2020/checklist/)

- ☐ Run the VIN at a Kia dealer (or owners.kia.com/us/en/recalls.html) for open recalls and campaign status, especially the KSDS knock-sensor update and, on replaced engines in 2016-2017 cars, the SC172 high-pressure fuel pipe recall.
- ☐ On 2.4L/2.0T cars: ask directly whether the engine was ever replaced under warranty or the KSDS campaign. A documented Kia replacement engine, with the fuel-pipe recall done on a 2016-2017, is a plus, not a minus.
- ☐ Cold-start the engine yourself and listen for a deep knock or rattle from the bottom end, the classic Theta II rod-bearing noise. Walk away if you hear it.
- ☐ Check the oil level and condition on the dipstick. A low level on a 'just serviced' car suggests it's burning oil, the known precursor to bearing failure.
- ☐ On a 2017 V6, confirm by VIN that recall SC153 (NHTSA 17V586000, crankshaft) is done.
- ☐ On 2016–2017 V6 cars: check for coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, or a sweet smell (the head-bolt/head-gasket issue) and ask whether the WTY035 extended-warranty inspection or repair was done.
- ☐ Verify both low-beam headlights work and look for melted or discolored bulb connectors. Repeat low-beam burnout is a known Kia electrical quirk.
- ☐ On the highway test drive, note whether the car tracks straight or wanders and needs constant correction.
- ☐ On 2019–2020 V6 cars, confirm the 8-speed shifts cleanly through all gears with no flare or harsh downshifts.

Known faults

## Common Kia Sorento problems & repair costs

### Theta II engine bearing failure / seizure (2.4L and 2.0T)

$5,500–$9,500

engine safety 2016–2020 (2.4L); 2016–2018 (2.0T) ~60k–120k mi

**Symptoms:** Metallic knocking or rod knock from the bottom end (often on cold start first), check-engine or oil-pressure light, sudden loss of power, or the engine simply seizing, sometimes while driving. Bearing debris can also lead to non-collision engine fires, which is why NHTSA treated this as a safety issue.

**Fix:** Full engine (short block) replacement. Kia's KSDS knock-sensor software update detects early bearing wear and derates the engine so you can get it in before it grenades. Under the class-action settlement, 2016–2019 Sorentos with the 2.4L GDI or 2.0T that have the KSDS update carry a lifetime warranty on the short block, so a qualifying failure should cost you nothing at a Kia dealer. The 2020 model year is outside the settlement class. Note: on 2016-2017 cars, engines replaced under warranty or the KSDS campaign were later recalled (SC172, NHTSA 18V907000) to inspect the high-pressure fuel pipe, which could leak fuel and start a fire if mis-installed during the swap.

### Excessive oil consumption (Theta II 2.4L / 2.0T)

$2,500–$6,500

engine severe 2016–2020 ~70k–110k mi

**Symptoms:** Oil level drops noticeably between changes, sometimes a quart every 1,000 miles or less, with no visible leak and no blue smoke early on. Owners often discover it only when the oil light comes on.

**Fix:** This is usually the opening act of the bearing/ring problem above, not a separate disease. Document consumption with dated oil-level photos, then push Kia for an oil-consumption test; cars that fail can qualify for engine replacement under the settlement's lifetime short-block warranty (2016–2019 with KSDS done). Out of pocket, the fix is rings or a replacement engine. In the meantime: check the dipstick every fill-up. Running it low is what kills the bearings.

### 3.3L V6 head-bolt stretch / head-gasket failure

$3,000–$8,000

engine severe 2016–2017 (rate drops sharply 2018+) ~100k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Coolant loss with no obvious external leak, overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, milky oil in bad cases. Often little warning before the temperature spikes.

**Fix:** Head bolts in the aluminum block could stretch or pull threads, letting the head gasket fail. Kia logged thousands of warranty claims, NHTSA opened an investigation in late 2023, and Kia issued extended-warranty campaign WTY035 covering 2016–2017 Sorento 3.3L engines for 15 years/180,000 miles. Kia deepened the head-bolt thread engagement in production during 2017, and 2018–2020 engines fail at a fraction of the earlier rate. If a 2016–2017 V6 overheats or loses coolant, go to a Kia dealer and cite WTY035 before paying an independent shop for a head-gasket job or used engine. Separately, recall SC153 (NHTSA 17V586000) covers certain 2017 Sorento 3.3L engines whose crankshaft may have been improperly heat treated and may fail. Dealers inspect the crankshaft and replace the engine sub assembly as needed.

### Low-beam headlight bulbs burn out repeatedly

$20–$300

electrical minor 2016–2020

**Symptoms:** Halogen low beams fail every few months instead of every few years, often one side at a time. In worse cases the bulb connector overheats and the terminals melt.

**Fix:** A long-running Kia complaint: always-on DRLs plus voltage surge at startup cook the bulbs, and an overheating connector makes it worse. The cheap fix is a quality halogen bulb (a 15-minute DIY; see repairs below). If the socket shows melted plastic, replace the pigtail/connector; Kia's updated harness adds a resistor to the circuit. Inspect the connector any time a bulb fails early.

### Steering wander at highway speed

$100–$1,500

steering moderate 2016–2018 (most reported) ~under 30k mi (often from new)

**Symptoms:** The car doesn't track straight on the highway and needs constant small corrections; feels twitchy or vague on-center. Reported from low mileage, so it's not simple wear.

**Fix:** Start cheap: alignment to the tight end of spec and a check for uneven tire wear. Some owners got relief from dealer steering-software (MDPS) recalibration; a minority ended up in steering couplers or, rarely, a rack. Drive any UM Sorento at 65+ mph before buying and judge for yourself. Some cars have it, many don't.

Sources: [CarComplaints: 2017 Kia Sorento steering complaints](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Kia/Sorento/2017/)

A UM Sorento with a healthy engine is unremarkable to own: brakes, tires, fluids, and the odd bulb or sensor. The whole cost picture hinges on the engine. A 2016–2019 Theta II car with KSDS done shifts catastrophic engine cost onto Kia's lifetime short-block warranty, but expect dealer visits and paperwork if you ever claim it. A 2020 2.4L or any Theta II without the update means you're self-insuring against a $5,500–$9,500 engine. The V6 costs a little more in gas and is the cheaper engine to live with long-term, especially 2018+. Budget normally otherwise; parts are reasonably priced and independent shops know these cars well.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Kia Sorento problems (DIY)

### Replace a low-beam headlight bulb (and inspect the connector)

easy 20–30 min saves ~$50–$120

**Tools:** Nitrile gloves (don't touch halogen glass bare-handed), Flashlight

- Open the hood and locate the round dust cap on the back of the headlight housing; on the driver's side you may need to nudge intake ducting aside for hand room.
- Twist off the dust cap, unplug the connector, and release the bulb (twist-lock on these housings).
- Inspect the connector closely. Browned, melted, or brittle plastic means the pigtail should be replaced, not just the bulb.
- Install the new bulb with gloves on, seat it fully, reconnect, and refit the dust cap.
- Test low beams, high beams, and DRLs before closing the hood.

### Oil and filter change (with an oil-consumption log)

easy 45 min–1 hr saves ~$60–$130

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands or ramps, Oil drain pan, Socket set (17mm drain plug), Oil filter wrench, Funnel

- Warm the engine briefly, raise the front of the vehicle securely, and place the drain pan under the plug.
- Remove the drain plug, drain fully, and reinstall with a new crush washer, snug. Don't gorilla it.
- Replace the oil filter, lightly oiling the new gasket first.
- Refill with the spec amount. 2.4L: 5.07 qt, 5W-20 or 5W-30. 2.0T (2016-2018): 5.07 qt, 5W-30. V6: 6.02 qt (2016-2017) or 6.87 qt (2018-2020), 5W-30. Then check the dipstick.
- Start the engine, check for leaks, re-check the level after it sits.
- On any Theta II car: photograph the dipstick with a dated phone photo now and at every fill-up. That log is your evidence if you ever need Kia to honor an oil-consumption claim.

### Cabin & engine air filter change

easy 20 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** None (hands only; maybe a screwdriver for the airbox clips)

- Open the glovebox, unhook the damper arm, squeeze the side stops to drop it, and pull the cabin filter cover.
- Slide out the old cabin filter and insert the new one with the airflow arrow pointing the correct way (marked on the housing).
- For the engine filter, release the airbox clips, swap the panel filter, and re-clip the lid.
- Reset the glovebox stops and damper arm.

## The short version

The 2016–2020 Sorento (chassis code UM) is two very different used cars wearing the same body. With the 3.3L V6, especially 2018 and later, it’s a comfortable, well-equipped three-row crossover that will quietly do 200k miles. With the 2.4L or 2.0T Theta II four-cylinder, it’s a bet on Kia’s most infamous engine family: rod bearings can wear, knock, and seize, sometimes taking the whole engine (and occasionally starting a fire) with them.

Kia’s response was unusually large: an engine recall on earlier years, a knock-sensor software campaign (KSDS) that detects bearing wear early, and a class-action settlement that extends the short-block warranty to **lifetime** on 2016–2019 Theta II cars that have the update. That warranty is the single most important fact about this generation.

## What that means when you’re shopping

First question: **which engine?** If it’s the V6, your homework is the 2016–2017 head-bolt issue: check for coolant loss and overheating history, and know that Kia’s WTY035 campaign covers those two years for 15 years/180,000 miles. A 2018–2020 V6 (the 2019+ gets a nicer 8-speed automatic) is the clean recommendation.

If it’s a 2.4L or 2.0T, the deal lives or dies on paperwork. Have a Kia dealer run the VIN: KSDS update done? Engine ever replaced under warranty or the KSDS campaign? On a 2016-2017, fuel-pipe recall (SC172) completed after any replacement? A Theta II car with all boxes checked carries a lifetime short-block warranty, genuinely useful protection. A 2020 2.4L gets none of that settlement coverage, which is why we’d rather have a 2019.

On the test drive: listen to the cold start for knock, check the dipstick, confirm both low beams work (repeat bulb burnout is a known quirk), and see whether it tracks straight at highway speed.

## The one habit that saves these engines

Theta II failures are usually preceded by oil consumption. Whatever you buy, check the oil at every fill-up and keep dated dipstick photos. It’s a two-minute habit that both protects the bearings and builds the evidence file Kia will ask for if you ever claim the warranty.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA complaint and recall data, the Kia engine settlement’s own terms, Kia warranty-extension campaigns, CarComplaints data, and owner-forum reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Misleading

### [Is the "$1 Japanese oil trick" that stops engine wear forever real?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-japanese-oil-trick-mos2-engine-wear/)

The 'Japanese oil trick' is almost certainly MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), a real industrial friction modifier. It is German, not Japanese (Liqui Moly popularized it), sold openly at every parts store for $15-20, has real but modest measured friction benefits, and was never buried by anyone.

Misleading

### [Is the "$2 liquid that stops any leak" really banned in 11 states?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-stop-leak-banned-11-states/)

Automotive stop-leak products are not banned in any US state. The products are real (Bar's Leaks, BlueDevil), they work in specific narrow situations, and they can permanently damage your cooling or oiling system if applied to the wrong leak.

Dangerous

### [Is the "$2 liquid that destroys engine sludge forever" real? Our shop-floor verdict.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-engine-sludge-destroyer-liquid/)

An aggressive solvent flush on a high-mileage engine is a textbook way to spin a bearing. The viral 'kitchen-cabinet flush' is folklore that real shops spend money cleaning up after.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which 2016–2020 Kia Sorento years should I avoid?

2016 is the worst year. It has both the Theta II four-cylinder failures and the early V6 head-bolt problem. More useful than a year is the engine: any 2.4L or 2.0T without proof of the KSDS knock-sensor update is a gamble, and the 2020 2.4L sits outside the class-action settlement entirely. The safest pick is a 2018–2020 with the 3.3L V6.

### Does the Kia lifetime engine warranty cover my Sorento?

If it's a 2016–2019 with the 2.4L GDI or 2.0T Theta II and the KSDS knock-sensor software update has been installed, the class-action settlement extends the short-block warranty (block, crank, rods, bearings, pistons) to lifetime, regardless of mileage or how many owners the car has had. A Kia dealer can confirm campaign status by VIN. The 2020 model year and the 3.3L V6 are not part of that settlement. The V6 has its own WTY035 extension (15 yr/180k) for 2016–2017 head-bolt failures.

### Is the 2.4L Sorento safe to buy at all?

It can be, with paperwork. A 2016–2019 car with the KSDS update documented is effectively insured against the big failure by the lifetime short-block warranty, which is more protection than most used cars have. What you don't want is a Theta II car with no campaign history, an oil level that's mysteriously low, or any bottom-end noise on cold start. And check whether the engine was already replaced. A documented Kia replacement engine (on a 2016-2017, with the SC172 fuel-pipe recall done afterward) is a point in the car's favor.

### Is the V6 Sorento reliable?

Mostly yes, and it's the engine we'd pick, but 2016–2017 V6s can stretch head bolts and blow the head gasket, typically between 100k and 150k miles. Kia extended the warranty on those two years to 15 years/180,000 miles (campaign WTY035) after NHTSA started investigating. Kia fixed the bolt-thread design in production during 2017, so 2018–2020 V6s fail at a much lower rate.

### How many miles will a Kia Sorento UM last?

A V6 car, or a four-cylinder that survives (or gets a warranty replacement engine), will do 200,000 miles with routine care. The transmissions, AWD system, and body hold up fine. The honest answer for an unverified Theta II car is 'until the bearings say otherwise,' which is exactly why you check the campaign status and oil habits before buying.
