# Nissan Altima 2007–2012 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The 4th-gen Altima is roomy, quick for the money, and cheap to buy used, because the market already knows about the Xtronic CVT. Transmission failure, whine, and judder are the defining problem of this generation, common enough that Nissan doubled the CVT warranty to 10 years/120,000 miles on 2007–2010 cars (long expired now). Add the 2009–2010 steering-column-lock no-start issue and this is a car you buy on transmission evidence, not on looks.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2007–2012 Nissan Altima?

Only buy one with proof about the transmission. The engines, both the 2.5 and the excellent 3.5 V6, will outlast the car, but the Xtronic CVT fails often enough that Nissan doubled its warranty on 2007–2010 cars, and every one of those warranties has now expired. That means a used 4th-gen Altima is either a bargain (CVT already replaced with paperwork, or a 6-speed manual car) or a $4,000–$5,500 transmission bill wearing a low price tag. On 2009–2010 push-button-start cars, also confirm the electronic steering column lock was replaced under Nissan's service campaign, or you may one day own a car that simply won't start. A manual-transmission car or a documented-CVT-replacement car is a legitimately good cheap sedan; anything else is a gamble.

Best years

2011–2012 (fewest complaints, post-ESCL, but the CVT risk never goes away), Any year with a 6-speed manual

Years to avoid

2009 (peak complaint year, CVT failures plus the steering-lock no-start problem), 2009–2010 push-button cars with no proof of ESCL replacement, 2008–2009 in sun-belt states (melting dashboard) unless the dash was replaced, Altima Hybrid unless the HV battery and brake actuator check out

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Nissan Altima

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/nissan-altima-2007-2012/checklist/)

- ☐ Cold-start the car and drive it 20+ minutes. Listen for a whine that rises with speed, and feel for shudder, judder, or rubber-band hesitation under light throttle at 20–45 mph, all early CVT failure signs.
- ☐ Ask directly: has the CVT ever been replaced? Get the paperwork. A car with a documented replacement unit is worth more than one that's 'never had a problem' at 120k miles.
- ☐ Check the CVT fluid service history. NS-2 fluid drain-and-fills every 30k–60k miles are the single best predictor of a surviving Xtronic.
- ☐ On 2009–2010 push-button-start cars, have a Nissan dealer run the VIN to confirm the electronic steering column lock (ESCL) service campaign was performed.
- ☐ Check the oil level and ask about oil consumption on 2.5L cars. A quart every 1,000–1,500 miles means walk away or price in engine work.
- ☐ In hot-climate cars, look at the dash top for shine, stickiness, or cracking (2008–2009 especially). Replacement is four figures.
- ☐ On the Hybrid, watch for the hybrid-system warning light, weak electric assist, and any ABS/brake warning lights; HV battery and brake actuator repairs can exceed the car's value.
- ☐ Skip cars with 'CVT serviced with universal fluid' history. Wrong fluid kills these transmissions.

Known faults

## Common Nissan Altima problems & repair costs

### CVT transmission failure, whine, and judder (Xtronic)

$3,500–$5,500

transmission severe 2007–2012 (all CVT cars; 2007–2009 worst by complaint volume) ~60k–120k mi

**Symptoms:** High-pitched whine that rises with road speed; shudder or judder under light acceleration at 20–45 mph; rubber-band surging or hesitation; slipping and loss of power, sometimes with the car dropping into limp mode on the highway. Overheated fluid is a common trigger on long grades or hot days.

**Fix:** Failed units get replaced, not rebuilt at most shops, a reman or used JF011E/JF010E installed. Nissan extended the CVT warranty on 2003–2010 CVT models to 10 years/120,000 miles, but that window has closed on every 4th-gen car, so today the bill is yours. Religious NS-2 fluid drain-and-fills (30k–60k intervals) and an added transmission cooler in hot climates are the only real prevention.

### Electronic steering column lock (ESCL) failure: car won't start

$700–$1,100

electrical severe 2009–2010 (push-button start) ~any. It's an electronic failure, not wear

**Symptoms:** You press the start button and nothing happens: a red key or lock light on the dash, steering column locked, car completely immobilized. Often strands the owner at a gas station or in a driveway with no warning.

**Fix:** Nissan issued a service campaign (not a recall) covering roughly 243,000 2009–2010 Altima, Altima Hybrid, and Maxima vehicles: dealers replace the ESCL with a new part that deletes the locking function (the immobilizer still protects against theft) and Nissan reimbursed owners who had already paid. Check by VIN whether it was done; on an unfixed car budget the four-figure out-of-pocket dealer repair, or the common owner workaround of replacing/bypassing the lock unit.

### Oil consumption (QR25DE 2.5L)

$100–$4,000

engine moderate 2007–2012 (2.5L, mostly higher-mileage cars) ~80k+ mi

**Symptoms:** Oil level drops noticeably between changes with no external leak or visible smoke, commonly a quart every 1,000–2,000 miles on affected engines. Dealers historically called up to a quart per 1,000 miles 'acceptable,' which tells you how normalized it became. Run low, it takes out the engine.

**Fix:** The honest range: on the low end you simply check and top up oil between changes and the car lives a long life. Piston-ring or engine work to actually cure heavy consumption runs into thousands and rarely pencils out on a car this cheap. This engine family's earlier (2002–2006) precat-failure history is why used-Nissan buyers are trained to watch the dipstick; the 4th gen is better, but consumption complaints persist, so verify on the specific car.

Sources: [CarComplaints: 2010 Altima excessive oil consumption](https://www.carcomplaints.com/Nissan/Altima/2010/engine/excessive_oil_consumption.shtml), [NissanClub forum: QR25 oil consumption threads](https://www.nissanclub.com/threads/huge-oil-consumption.382234/)

### Melting / sticky dashboard

$800–$2,000

interior moderate 2008–2009 (hot, sunny climates) ~age/UV-driven, not mileage

**Symptoms:** Dash top turns shiny, gooey, and sticky in the sun, smells chemical, and reflects a glare onto the windshield bad enough to hurt visibility, which is why safety groups pushed for action. Endemic in Florida and the Gulf states.

**Fix:** Full dashboard replacement. A 2016–2017 class-action settlement had Nissan covering all but $250 of the replacement, but only for Florida owners, and the claim window closed in 2017. Today it's a straight parts-and-labor job, or owners live with a dash mat covering the mess. On a sun-belt car, check the dash before you buy, not after.

### Altima Hybrid high-voltage battery and brake/ABS actuator failures

$2,000–$5,000

hybrid battery severe 2007–2011 (Hybrid only) ~100k+ mi / 10+ years

**Symptoms:** Hybrid-system warning light, no-start until the 12V battery is reset, weak or absent electric assist, falling fuel economy; separately, ABS/brake warning lights and hard or inconsistent brake pedal from the electro-hydraulic brake actuator. Isolation faults (code P0AA6) often trace to an aging HV battery.

**Fix:** HV battery replacement (reconditioned or used-good units keep it toward the low end) or brake/ABS actuator replacement. Both need a shop comfortable with hybrids, and the Toyota-licensed system means fewer specialists know it than know a Prius. Because the Hybrid sold in modest numbers in mostly CARB states, parts and expertise are thinner. Repairs can exceed the car's value; buy only with a healthy hybrid-system health check.

Sources: [Nissan product service information: 2007–2011 Altima Hybrid (NHTSA)](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10165758-0001.pdf), [CarProblemZoo: Altima Hybrid service brakes complaints](https://www.carproblemzoo.com/nissan/altimahybrid/service-brakes-problems.php)

Set the CVT aside and the 4th-gen Altima is inexpensive to run: parts are plentiful and cheap, both engines are understressed, and routine service is simple. The problem is you can't set the CVT aside. A surviving transmission needs $150–$250 NS-2 fluid services on a 30k–60k cycle. Skip them and you're pre-paying a $4,000–$5,500 replacement. Budget normal wear (brakes, struts, mounts), keep a quart of oil in the trunk on a 2.5, and treat any whine or shudder as a stop-driving-and-diagnose event, because a CVT caught early at the fluid stage is occasionally saveable, and one driven to failure never is.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Nissan Altima problems (DIY)

### CVT fluid drain and fill (NS-2)

moderate 1–1.5 hrs saves ~$120–$250

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands (or ramps), Socket set + drain-plug washer, Fluid pump or long funnel, Drain pan and a way to measure what came out

- Warm the transmission with a short drive, then raise and level the car.
- Pull the CVT drain plug and measure exactly how much fluid comes out (typically 5–6 quarts on a drain-and-fill).
- Reinstall the plug with a new washer and refill through the dipstick/fill tube with the same amount of genuine Nissan NS-2 CVT fluid, never universal or 'multi-vehicle' ATF.
- Start the car, cycle the shifter through all positions, and let it warm up.
- Check the level on the CVT dipstick at operating temperature and top off as needed.
- Repeat the drain-and-fill every 30k–60k miles. This is the cheapest insurance this car can buy.

### Cabin & engine air filter change

easy 20–30 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** Phillips screwdriver (glovebox stops)

- Open the glovebox, release the side stops, and swing it down to expose the cabin filter door.
- Slide the old cabin filter out and insert the new one with the airflow arrow oriented correctly.
- Unclip the engine airbox lid, swap in the new panel filter, and re-seat the lid clips.
- Confirm the airbox lid is fully clipped. An unseated lid lets unfiltered air past.

### Front brake pad replacement

moderate 1.5–2 hrs saves ~$150–$300

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands, Lug wrench / breaker bar, Socket set (12–17mm), C-clamp or caliper piston tool, Brake grease

- Loosen the lugs, raise and support the front of the car, and remove the wheels.
- Remove the two caliper slide bolts and hang the caliper. Don't let it dangle by the hose.
- Slide out the old pads and press the piston back with a C-clamp against the old pad.
- Grease the slide pins and pad contact points, fit the new pads, and remount the caliper.
- Torque the caliper bolts and lugs to spec, then pump the pedal firm BEFORE driving.
- Bed the pads with a series of moderate stops from 40 mph.

## The short version

The 2007–2012 Altima is one of the best-value used midsize sedans on paper (roomy, decent to drive, and the 3.5 V6 is genuinely quick) and one of the riskiest in practice, for one reason: the **Xtronic CVT**. Whine, judder, slipping, and outright failure were common enough that Nissan doubled the transmission warranty on 2003–2010 CVT models to **10 years / 120,000 miles** and reimbursed owners who had already paid for repairs. Every one of those extended warranties has now expired, so a failure today is a $3,500–$5,500 replacement, often more than the car is worth.

The second landmine is specific to **2009–2010 push-button-start cars**: the electronic steering column lock (ESCL) fails and the car simply won’t start. Nissan ran a free replacement campaign covering about 243,000 Altimas and Maximas; a car that never got it can strand you without warning.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Buy the transmission, not the car. A 4th-gen Altima with a **documented CVT replacement** or a **6-speed manual** is a legitimately good cheap sedan. A 120,000-mile automatic with no fluid-service history is a transmission bill with seats.

On the test drive, get it to 20–45 mph under light throttle and pay attention: a rising whine, a shudder, or rubber-band surging is the CVT telling you what it’s about to do. Then check the paper trail. NS-2 fluid drain-and-fills every 30k–60k miles are the single best predictor of a surviving Xtronic.

On 2009–2010 cars, have a Nissan dealer run the VIN for the ESCL campaign. On 2.5L cars, check the oil level and ask about consumption. In sun-belt cars, look at the dash top for the 2008–2009 shiny-sticky melt. And treat the Hybrid (2007–2011) as a specialist purchase: Toyota-licensed system, small sales numbers, and HV-battery or brake-actuator repairs that can total the car.

## The years, ranked honestly

**2011–2012** drew the fewest complaints and sit past the ESCL years, the best of the generation, with the CVT caveat permanently attached. **2009** is the year to skip: peak CVT complaints plus the steering-lock problem. And any year with the 6-speed manual quietly sidesteps the generation’s defining flaw.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA complaint, recall, and service-bulletin data, Nissan’s own CVT warranty-extension and ESCL campaigns, CarComplaints.com trends, and owner-forum reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

The mineral is Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). It was a real desulfation hack for serviceable flooded-cell batteries 40+ years ago. It does not work on modern sealed AGM or EFB batteries, and trying it on yours will void the warranty without helping the battery.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Nissan Altima years should I avoid?

2009 is the worst single year. It combines peak CVT-failure complaints with the steering-column-lock no-start problem. 2009–2010 push-button cars are only safe if the ESCL service campaign was performed (a dealer can check by VIN), and 2008–2009 cars in hot states often have the melting dash. 2011–2012 cars drew the fewest complaints, but the CVT risk exists in every automatic year of this generation.

### Is the Nissan Altima CVT still covered by the warranty extension?

No. Nissan extended the CVT warranty on 2003–2010 CVT-equipped models to 10 years or 120,000 miles and reimbursed prior repairs, but that clock ran out years ago on every 2007–2012 Altima. Today a failed CVT is entirely your bill. Figure $3,500–$5,500 installed at an independent shop. That's why proof of a prior replacement, or a manual transmission, is worth real money on this car.

### How long does a 4th-gen Altima CVT last?

It's a spread, not a number. Neglected units have failed before 80,000 miles; owners who did NS-2 fluid drain-and-fills every 30k–60k miles and avoided sustained heat have passed 150,000–200,000. The engines will outlive the transmission either way. Treat any whine, shudder, or rubber-band hesitation as the start of the failure clock, not a quirk.

### Why won't my 2009–2010 Altima start even with a good battery?

Very likely the electronic steering column lock (ESCL). It fails electronically and immobilizes the car. Push-button does nothing, often with a key/lock light on the dash. Nissan ran a free service campaign replacing the ESCL on roughly 243,000 2009–2010 Altima, Altima Hybrid, and Maxima vehicles; a dealer can check by VIN whether yours was done. Out of pocket, the repair historically ran $700–$1,100.

### Is the Altima Hybrid worth buying used?

Only with a hybrid-system health check and a discount. It uses a Toyota-licensed hybrid system, but it isn't a Prius: sales were small and mostly limited to CARB-emissions states, so parts and specialist knowledge are thinner. An aging high-voltage battery or a failed brake/ABS actuator can each cost more than the car is worth. The regular 2.5 with a documented CVT, or a manual coupe, is the smarter used buy.

### Which is more reliable, the 2.5 or the 3.5 V6 Altima?

The VQ35DE 3.5 V6 is the stronger, longer-lived engine and doesn't share the 2.5's oil-consumption reputation, but on automatic cars both feed the same failure-prone CVT, and the V6's extra torque doesn't do it any favors. If reliability is the goal, transmission history matters far more than which engine you pick. A 6-speed manual 3.5 coupe dodges the issue entirely.
