Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

Check 01

Test drive with rolling starts and light throttle between 15 and 40 mph. CVT judder feels like driving over a rumble strip. Any shudder, hesitation, or RPM flare walks you away or buys a big discount.

Check 02

Run the VIN at nissanusa.com/recalls: the ABS actuator recalls (NHTSA 18V-601 / 19V-807, fire risk) and the 2019 backup-camera software recall (19V-654) must show completed.

Check 03

Cold-start the engine and listen for rattle from the front of the engine for the first few seconds. Startup rattle on a VQ35DD points to timing-chain wear, usually downstream of sludge.

Check 04

With the engine warm and fans running, listen at the grille for a wobble or rattling from the radiator cooling fan, a known failure that can lead to overheating, and a $1,000+ repair.

Check 05

Check the oil: ask for change receipts, pull the dipstick, and look under the filler cap. Black sludge or a dry service history on this direct-injection engine is a hard no.

Check 06

Ask specifically whether the CVT was ever repaired or replaced under Nissan's settlement warranty extension (2017–2018 cars). A documented newer transmission is a plus, not a red flag.

Check 07

On the highway, watch for the forward-collision/AEB warning triggering with nothing ahead. False activations are a documented complaint on 2017–2019 cars and a radar-module fix costs real money out of warranty.

Check 08

Cycle the power liftgate several times and make sure it stays up. Failing struts that let the gate sag or self-close are a common, annoying fault.

Walk-away signals

2017 (highest complaint count of the facelift: cooling fan failures, early VQ35DD sludge reports, and the CVT settlement years) · Any year without oil-change records (DI sludge risk makes maintenance history worth more than model year)
