# Subaru Outback 2020–2025 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The 6th-gen Outback is the most refined Outback yet, and the drivetrains (a direct-injected 2.5L boxer and a genuinely strong 2.4L turbo) are the healthiest part of the car. The problems live in the glass and the electronics: windshields that crack easily (a class-action settlement covers 2020–2022), 12-volt batteries that die young (one settled lawsuit for 2020, a new one filed for 2021–2022), and the 11.6-inch Starlink touchscreen that freezes and black-screens often enough that Subaru extended its warranty to 8 years. Turbo cars also carry a pair of CVT drive-chain recalls worth checking by VIN.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2020–2025 Subaru Outback?

Buy the drivetrain; document the electronics and the glass. Both engines are chain-driven, direct-injected, and holding up well, and even the CVT story is better than the last generation's. Subaru caught the turbo cars' chain-slip issue with recalls and extended the 2020 turbo's CVT warranty to 10 years/100,000 miles. What you're really shopping around is the annoyance layer: a windshield that cracks easily (2020–2022 cars got a class-action extended warranty with ONE free replacement, so find out if it's been used), a 12-volt battery that drains when the car sits (settled for 2020, in fresh litigation for 2021–2022), and the 11.6-inch touchscreen that freezes or goes black (Subaru extended head-unit coverage to 8 years/150,000 miles on 2020–2022 cars in January 2025). A 2023–2025 car sidesteps most of this: post-refresh, wireless CarPlay, and far lower complaint volume, but also none of the extended-coverage safety nets.

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Subaru Outback

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/subaru-outback-2020-2025/checklist/)

- ☐ Inspect the windshield edge-to-edge, especially near the base. On 2020–2022 cars, ask whether the class-action extended warranty (8yr/100k, ONE free replacement) has already been used on this VIN. A Subaru dealer can check.
- ☐ Check the battery date code and ask how many batteries the car has had. Repeated dead batteries are this generation's signature complaint; if you're looking at a 2021–2022, know that the drain issue on those years is the subject of an active lawsuit, not a settled one.
- ☐ Cycle the 11.6-inch touchscreen hard: CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, backup camera, volume, climate controls. Freezes, reboots, or black screens are documented faults. On 2020–2022 cars, dealer repairs are covered by Subaru's head-unit warranty extension (8 years/150,000 miles) if the unit is on the latest software.
- ☐ On 2020–2021 cars, especially XT/turbo, confirm by VIN that the CVT chain-slip recalls (NHTSA 21V-955 and 22V-485) were performed, then feel for any hesitation, slip, or shudder on the test drive.
- ☐ Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls: the 2020 fuel-pump recall (21V-587), the 2021–2023 inhibitor-switch recall (23V-755), the 2020–2022 passenger-airbag sensor recall (24V-227), and the 2023 driveshaft-bolt recall (23V-647) should all show as completed.
- ☐ If the windshield has ever been replaced on an EyeSight car, ask for proof the camera was recalibrated. Shops that skip it leave the driver-assist system aiming wrong.
- ☐ Check the oil level and ask about top-offs between changes. This generation's engines burn far less oil than older Subarus, but a quart-eater is still a walk-away regardless of year.

Known faults

## Common Subaru Outback problems & repair costs

### Windshield cracks easily

$500–$1,500

body / glass minor 2020–2022 (worst); reported through 2024 ~often under 15k mi

**Symptoms:** Cracks that appear from small chips, or seemingly from nothing, and spread across the glass, often starting near the base of the windshield. CarComplaints lists a cracked windshield as the #1 reported 2020 Outback problem (average reported repair ~$900 at 8,000 miles; ~$1,400 on 2022 cars).

**Fix:** Windshield replacement, plus EyeSight camera recalibration on every car (all 6th-gen Outbacks have EyeSight). The Powell v. Subaru class settlement (approved April 2025) gave 2020–2022 Outbacks an extended warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles covering ONE windshield replacement. Check whether it's been used before you buy. Cash-reimbursement claims closed January 31, 2025. Separately, some 2022 cars were recalled (NHTSA 22V-712) because a bad primer/clearcoat interaction meant the windshield itself could detach. Different defect, same part of the car.

### 12-volt battery drains / dies prematurely (parasitic draw)

$150–$400

electrical moderate 2020–2022 most reported ~often under 20k mi

**Symptoms:** Battery goes flat after the car sits a few days, needs repeated jump-starts or charges, or dies outright within the first year or two. CarComplaints' top 2021 Outback problems are 'battery dies' (avg. 17,000 miles) and 'battery requires repeated charges' (avg. 7,000 miles). Root cause alleged in litigation: control modules that never fully enter sleep mode after shutdown.

**Fix:** A new battery (many owners upsize to an AGM in the factory Group 25 size) treats the symptom; a parasitic-draw test finds whether something is staying awake. Two separate legal actions cover this generation: the In re Subaru Battery Drain settlement (approved January 2023) included 2015–2020 Outbacks, so only the 2020 model year of this generation, and its claim window has closed. A new class action, Taylor v. Subaru (filed May 2026), names 2021–2022 Outbacks and is active as of this writing.

### 11.6-inch Starlink touchscreen freezes, reboots, and black screens

electrical moderate 2020–2022 (CP1 head unit); improved after the 2023 refresh ~any

**Symptoms:** The big vertical touchscreen freezes or goes black, reboots on its own, drops CarPlay/Android Auto or Bluetooth, loses audio, or responds to touches you didn't make. Because climate controls live in the screen, a dead unit takes real functions with it. A failed over-the-air update also caused the rearview camera display to cut out on some 2020 cars. That one became a recall (NHTSA 20V-766).

**Fix:** Reprogramming first; if the unit is on current software and still faulting, a one-time head-unit replacement. In January 2025 Subaru extended warranty coverage on the CP1 head unit in 2020–2022 Outbacks to 8 years or 150,000 miles for exactly these failures (black/blank screen, loss of audio, repeated rebooting, CarPlay/Bluetooth/navigation/touchscreen faults), with reimbursement for owners who already paid. A 2023 class action over these systems (Cilluffo v. Subaru) ended in early 2025 without a class-wide settlement after the parties resolved the named plaintiffs' claims.

### CVT drive-chain slip on turbo (TR690) cars: recall territory

transmission severe 2020–2021 (XT/turbo primarily) ~any

**Symptoms:** A transmission-control programming error could engage the clutch before the drive chain was fully clamped, letting the chain slip, and in the worst case break, causing sudden loss of drive power. Owners reported judder, hesitation, or slipping before failure; many cars showed nothing before the recall reflash.

**Fix:** Two recalls: NHTSA 21V-955 (Subaru WRK-21, late 2021) covering 2020 Legacy/Outback turbo models, expanded by 22V-485 (WRK-22, 2022) to additional 2020–2021 cars. The fix is a free TCU reprogram, inspection of chain-slip data and the chain guide, and a free CVT replacement if damage is found; Subaru's TSB 16-139-22R additionally extended CVT coverage to 10 years/100,000 miles (one replacement) on cars that had the recall done. Then in June 2025 Subaru extended the CVT warranty on ALL 2020 Outback turbo (FA24/TR690) models to 10 years/100,000 miles. Note what's NOT covered: 2.5L cars and 2021–2025 model years got no blanket CVT extension.

Sources: [Subaru of America: CVT warranty extension announcement, June 30 2025 (NHTSA copy)](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2025/MC-11019956-0001.pdf), [OEMDTC: WRK-21 CVT warranty extension / TSB 16-139-22R (2020 Outback turbo)](https://subaru.oemdtc.com/5352/cvt-assembly-wrk-21-warranty-extension-2019-2020-subaru), [RepairPal: recall 22V-485 (2020–2021 Legacy/Outback chain slip)](https://repairpal.com/recall/22V485000)

### Low-pressure fuel pump failure (Denso impeller): 2020 recall

fuel system safety 2020 ~any

**Symptoms:** Hard starting, rough running, or an engine that stalls and won't restart, caused by a Denso fuel-pump impeller that can crack, swell with fuel, deform, and jam the pump. The same supplier defect drove recalls across many brands.

**Fix:** Covered by recall: NHTSA 21V-587 (July 2021) recalled 2020 Outbacks (among other Subarus) to replace the low-pressure fuel pump free of charge. On any 2020 car, run the VIN and confirm this one is done. A stall at highway speed is not a maybe-later item.

Sources: [NHTSA: 2020 Outback recalls (21V-587 fuel pump)](https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/SUBARU/OUTBACK), [Torque News: Subaru pulled into expanded Denso fuel-pump recall](https://www.torquenews.com/1084/subaru-involved-new-15m-car-recall-over-possible-fuel-pump-failure)

Routine costs are reasonable for a mid-size AWD wagon: both engines use timing chains (no belt service), the battery bay is easy to reach, a skill this generation will make you practice, and brakes and tires are ordinary money (rotate religiously; Subaru AWD punishes mismatched tread). The realistic extra budget lines are glass and electronics: a windshield with EyeSight recalibration runs $500–$1,500 if you're outside the settlement warranty, and a battery every few years is a common owner report on 2020–2022 cars until the drain behavior is addressed. The CVT deserves a preventive drain-and-fill even though Subaru calls the fluid lifetime. That is cheap insurance on the one component that can outrun the car's value. Turbo (XT) cars cost more in fuel and premium-adjacent expectations, but the FA24 has been a strong engine; its risk sits in the recall paperwork, not the hardware habitually failing.

- With the car off, disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive, then remove the hold-down bracket.
- Lift out the old battery and clean both terminal clamps with the brush.
- Install the new battery. Factory size is BCI Group 25; many owners fit a Group 25 AGM specifically because of this generation's drain history.
- Reconnect positive first, then negative, and snug the hold-down.
- If this is your second or third battery, have a shop run a parasitic-draw test. A fresh battery won't fix a module that never sleeps, and on 2021–2022 cars keep your receipts while the Taylor lawsuit is pending.

### Cabin & engine air filter change

easy 20 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** None (hands only for both filters)

- Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to release the stops, and swing it down to expose the cabin filter door.
- Slide out the old cabin filter and insert the new one with the airflow arrow pointing the right way.
- For the engine filter, unclip the airbox lid in the engine bay, swap the panel filter, and re-clip.
- Seat the airbox lid fully. A bad seal lets unfiltered air past the sensors.

### Replace the wiper blades

easy 10 min saves ~$20–$40

**Tools:** None

- Buy the right sizes: 26-inch driver, 18-inch passenger, 16-inch rear on 2020–2024 cars.
- Lift the wiper arm, press the release tab on the old blade, and slide it off the hook.
- Click the new blade on until the tab locks, and lower the arm gently. A snapping arm can chip this generation's famously fragile windshield.
- Repeat for the passenger and rear blades, then test with washer fluid.

## The short version

The 6th-gen Outback (2020–2025) flips the last generation’s script. From 2015–2019, the scary part was the transmission; here, the drivetrain is the strong suit. The 2.5L FB25D and the 260-hp 2.4 turbo are both chain-driven, direct-injected, and quiet on the complaint boards, while the headaches moved to the **glass and the electronics**.

Three patterns dominate owner reports on 2020–2022 cars: windshields that crack far too easily (settled class action, with an 8-year/100k one-time replacement warranty), 12-volt batteries that die young (one settled lawsuit covering 2020, a fresh one filed in 2026 for 2021–2022), and the big 11.6-inch touchscreen freezing or going black (Subaru extended head-unit coverage to 8 years/150,000 miles in January 2025). Turbo cars add one real mechanical item: a CVT drive-chain slip defect handled under recalls 21V-955 and 22V-485.

## What that means when you’re shopping

This is a car you shop **by VIN report, not by vibes**. Nearly everything wrong with this generation is documented and checkable: run the VIN at nhtsa.gov for open recalls (fuel pump on 2020s, CVT chain-slip on 2020–2021 turbos, inhibitor switch, airbag sensor), then ask a Subaru dealer what extended coverages the car still carries. Those are the windshield settlement warranty, the head-unit extension, and on 2020 turbos the 10-year/100,000-mile CVT extension.

On the test drive: cycle the touchscreen hard (freezes and reboots are the tell), check the battery’s date code against the car’s age, and inspect the windshield edge-to-edge. If the glass was ever replaced, ask for proof the EyeSight camera was recalibrated.

Year-wise: **2023–2025 first, 2021–2022 second, 2020 last.** The refresh year (2023) brought wireless CarPlay and a better-behaved infotainment experience, and complaint volume drops off sharply from there. A 2020 isn’t a bad car. It’s just the year where every one of this generation’s known issues stacks up, so it has the most paperwork to verify.

## The generation in context

This was the last wagon-bodied Outback: the 7th generation arrived for 2026 as a boxier, more SUV-shaped vehicle. That makes a sorted 2023–2025 car the final iteration of the formula that made the Outback a default family-adventure choice, and likely the one used-market shoppers will keep hunting for.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall and complaint data, Subaru’s own warranty-extension bulletins, class-action settlement records, and owner reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Outdated

### [Does a "$1 mineral" really double car battery life? The Epsom-salt reality.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-mineral-doubles-battery-life-myth/)

The mineral is Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). It was a real desulfation hack for serviceable flooded-cell batteries 40+ years ago. It does not work on modern sealed AGM or EFB batteries, and trying it on yours will void the warranty without helping the battery.

Dangerous

### [Is the "$2 liquid that destroys engine sludge forever" real? Our shop-floor verdict.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-engine-sludge-destroyer-liquid/)

An aggressive solvent flush on a high-mileage engine is a textbook way to spin a bearing. The viral 'kitchen-cabinet flush' is folklore that real shops spend money cleaning up after.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the 2020–2025 Subaru Outback a reliable car?

Mechanically, yes. The 2.5L and 2.4 turbo boxers are chain-driven, direct-injected, and generating few complaints, and this generation's CVT record is meaningfully better than 2015–2019. The reliability hits are quality-of-life items concentrated in 2020–2022: easily cracked windshields, batteries that die young, and a glitchy 11.6-inch touchscreen. Annoying and sometimes expensive, but rarely the kind of failure that strands the drivetrain.

### Which Subaru Outback years should I avoid?

2020 is the year to scrutinize hardest: first year of the generation, peak complaint volume for the windshield, battery, and screen, plus the fuel-pump recall and the turbo CVT chain-slip recall. 2021–2022 are better but carry the same battery-drain and windshield patterns. 2023–2025 cars, after the refresh, show much lower complaint volume and are the safest picks.

### How many miles will a Subaru Outback last?

The oldest 6th-gen cars are only about six years old, so honest high-mileage data doesn't exist yet for this generation. The relevant signals are good: both engines use timing chains, oil-consumption complaints are far below older Subaru engines, and the previous generation routinely passed 200,000 miles when the CVT was cared for. Treat preventive CVT fluid service as the price of admission for a long life.

### What are the common problems with the 2020–2025 Subaru Outback?

Windshields that crack easily (class-action settlement on 2020–2022 cars), 12-volt batteries that drain or die prematurely (settled lawsuit for 2020; new lawsuit filed in 2026 for 2021–2022), the 11.6-inch Starlink screen freezing or black-screening (warranty extended to 8yr/150k on 2020–2022), CVT drive-chain slip recalls on 2020–2021 turbo cars, and the 2020 Denso fuel-pump recall. Most of it is documented, covered, and checkable by VIN, which is exactly how you should shop this car.

### Is the Subaru Outback CVT reliable in this generation?

Better than the last generation, with one specific caveat. The turbo cars' TR690 had a transmission-control programming defect that could let the drive chain slip and break. That was fixed under recalls 21V-955 and 22V-485, with damaged CVTs replaced free, and Subaru extended the 2020 turbo's CVT warranty to 10 years/100,000 miles in June 2025. The 2.5L's TR580 isn't part of those recalls and its complaint volume is low. Verify the recalls are done, feel for shudder on a cold test drive, and get a fluid service history if you can.

### Why does my Subaru Outback battery keep dying?

It's a documented pattern, not your imagination: components that stay awake after shutdown can drain the 12-volt battery, and undersized-capacity claims drove a class action Subaru settled for 2015–2020 models (2020 is the only covered year of this generation; the claim window has closed). A newer lawsuit filed in 2026 covers 2021–2022 Outbacks. Practical play: fit a quality AGM Group 25, get a parasitic-draw test if it recurs, and keep receipts.

### Is the Outback 2.4 turbo (XT) engine reliable?

So far, yes. The FA24 turbo is a stronger, lower-stress engine than its displacement suggests, since Subaru built it with beefed-up internals for the Ascent, and it hasn't produced the widespread failure patterns older turbo Subarus were known for. Its real paperwork risk on 2020–2021 cars is the CVT chain-slip recall on the transmission behind it, not the engine. Both engines use timing chains, so there's no belt-change interval to budget.
