Check 01

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (or a Toyota dealer) and confirm the Denso low-pressure fuel-pump recall (20V-012/20V-682) and, on 2018–2019, the brake vacuum pump recall (21V-890) show completed.

Check 02

On 2018–2019 cars, drive it in stop-and-go traffic: hunting between gears, harsh 1–3 shifts, or a pause then lurch from a stop means the transmission updates likely haven't been done.

Check 03

With the engine warm, turn the heat on full and check for weak heat, coolant smell, or a low reservoir, early signs of the known coolant bypass (flow shut-off) valve failure on 2.5L cars.

Check 04

Look under the car and along the front of the engine for pink/red coolant residue near the coolant valve area (driver's side of the 2.5L block).

Check 05

Test the touchscreen for several minutes: freezing, random reboots, or a black screen on 2018–2019 Entune units is common and has a software fix, but budget for a head unit if it persists.

Check 06

Check the oil level on the dipstick and ask for oil-change receipts; A25A engines run long factory intervals, and 10k-mile oil changes are where consumption complaints come from.

Check 07

On hybrids, verify 12V battery age and watch the dash for hybrid-system warnings on the test drive; the high-voltage pack itself rarely fails on this generation.
