# Toyota Camry 2018–2024 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The XV70 Camry is one of the safest used-car bets of its era, a genuinely durable sedan with two big early-year caveats. 2018–2020 cars were hit by the massive Denso fuel-pump recall (sudden stalling), and 2018–2019 cars got a second safety recall for a brake vacuum pump that can kill power brake assist. Early 8-speeds also shift rough until updated. A 2021–2024 car, or an early one with recall work documented, is about as low-risk as used cars get.

### Motor oil

2.5L A25A-FKS gas and A25A-FXS hybrid: SAE 0W-16 full synthetic, 4.8 qt with a filter change (4.4 qt without), so one 5-quart jug does one change with a little left over. 0W-20 is an emergency stand-in only; go back to 0W-16 at the next change. NOT the V6. See the V6 entry below

### Motor oil: 3.5L V6

3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 only: SAE 0W-20 full synthetic, 5.7 qt with a filter change (5.6 qt without). A 5-quart jug is NOT enough: buy 6 quarts, pour in 5.7, keep the rest. Do not put 0W-16 in this engine, and don't let anyone round 5.7 up to a flat 6. That overfills it

Hybrid (A25A-FXS) only: the high-voltage battery's cooling-air intake filter. Toyota lists one part, G92DH-33050, for every 2018-2024 Camry Hybrid (and 2019-2022 Avalon Hybrid). Near-miss warning: the similar G92DH-45010 is the Sienna's filter and G92DH-42010 the RAV4/Venza's, neither fits this car. Torn or damaged filters get replaced, not cleaned, per Toyota's bulletin

### Ignition coil

One coil per cylinder: four on the 2.5L A25A-FKS gas and the A25A-FXS hybrid, six on the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6. That count is the solid part. The part NUMBER is not. 90919-A2009 is what the catalogs return for this car, but 90919-A2010 and 90919-A2013 also appear against it, Toyota's own store publishes no fitment list for any of the three, and the aggregator engine columns are rolled up across other models, so none of them settles it. Buy by cylinder count, then confirm the number against your VIN at a dealer parts counter, or in Denso's catalog by engine code, before ordering six of anything

Toyota

The number the catalogs return for the 2018-2024 Camry. Denso is the OE manufacturer, so a Denso-boxed coil carrying this number is the same part. Sold individually, so order four or six by cylinder count. It supersedes 90919-02276, which is confirmed on Toyota's own site

### Automatic transmission fluid

The 8-speed automatic, gas trims only. Two different units: the 2.5L runs the UB80E, the 3.5L V6 runs the heavier-duty UA80E. Both take the same fluid, so this entry covers both, but do not buy a rebuild or a filter kit against the wrong code. Toyota ATF WS and nothing else. Total fill is 7.3 L on the 2.5L and 7.5 L on the 3.5L V6, but a drain and refill only moves about 3 to 4 quarts, so a full exchange takes several rounds. There is no dipstick. The hybrid does not use this transmission: its transaxle also runs ATF WS at 3.9 L, but that is a different service

### Brake fluid

FMVSS 116 DOT 3 or DOT 4, SAE J1703/J1704. Toyota publishes no replacement mileage for this car, only a level and condition check, so a flush is a judgment call and not a factory item. A full flush takes roughly a quart, which is three of Toyota's 12 oz bottles or one 32 oz aftermarket bottle

### Front strut

FRONT struts only. The rear of this car takes shock absorbers, which are a separate entry. Check your trim before ordering. KYB splits this car two ways: the comfort trims (L, LE, XLE, Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE) and the sport trims (SE, XSE, TRD, Hybrid SE) take different strut part numbers. Left and right are also different parts, so the safest buy is a front set in one box rather than two singles you have to match yourself. Rear dampers are a separate part not covered by this entry

### Front CV axle

Front axle assembly, sold per side. Nobody reseals a torn boot on this car: once grease has flung, the shop fits a complete axle, so the part to price is the assembly and not a boot kit. Toyota splits these numbers by engine, hybrid or not, FWD or AWD, and which plant built the car, so the OEM number below is one configuration and not a universal fit. Other 43410 numbers exist for this nameplate but several of them are previous-generation parts, so match by VIN rather than by picking a neighbouring number. Toyota also sells the inboard joint alone as a joint set (43403-06030 and 43403-06040), a cheaper repair than a full shaft, but its catalog pages publish no fitment list at all, so those need a VIN check before ordering. Aftermarket assemblies are catalogued cleanly by side

### Engine mount

The right-side engine mount is the one that fails on this car and it is engine-specific: 2.5L gas, 2.5L hybrid and 3.5L V6 all take different part numbers. Mounts are sold individually, but a worn mount rarely fails alone, which is why kits bundle the engine mount with the transmission and torque-rod mounts

### Front lower control arm

Front lower control arm, sold per side, bushing and ball joint included. ### Tires

Four different OE sizes on this one car, split by trim, and the wrong one is an expensive mistake. 235/45R18 on SE, XLE, XLE V6, Hybrid SE and Hybrid XLE. 215/55R17 on LE. 235/40R19 on XSE, XSE V6, TRD and Hybrid XSE. 205/65R16 on the Hybrid LE, which is the one people get wrong: it runs the small wheel for efficiency rather than the LE's 17. The L trim also used 205/65R16, but L was an early-years trim and is not on later cars, so do not assume it from the year alone. No trim uses a different front and rear size. Do not buy off the trim name alone: the size on YOUR car is printed on the driver's door jamb sticker, and a previous owner may have changed wheels

Deliberately no brand recommendation here: tire choice is a real test question and this desk has no test data to rank them honestly. This card routes to eBay Motors, whose search filters by size properly and where tires actually ship, rather than to Amazon

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2018–2024 Toyota Camry?

Buy it. The XV70 is the Camry doing what Camrys do, routinely clearing 200,000 miles with basic maintenance, and the hybrid is arguably the best used midsize sedan on the market, period. The homework is concentrated in the early years: 2018–2020 cars need the Denso fuel-pump recall verified done, 2018–2019 cars need the brake vacuum pump recall verified done, and early 8-speed cars should have the transmission software updates applied. A 2021–2024 car sidesteps nearly all of it. The V6 is a gem if you find one; the hybrid is the smart-money pick.

Best years

2021, 2022, 2023, 2024

Years to avoid

2018 (first-year: roughest 8-speed behavior plus both safety recalls), 2018–2020 only if fuel-pump recall work is undocumented

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Toyota Camry

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/toyota-camry-2018-2024/checklist/)

- ☐ Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (or a Toyota dealer) and confirm the Denso low-pressure fuel-pump recall (20V-012/20V-682) and, on 2018–2019, the brake vacuum pump recall (21V-890) show completed.
- ☐ On 2018–2019 cars, drive it in stop-and-go traffic: hunting between gears, harsh 1–3 shifts, or a pause then lurch from a stop means the transmission updates likely haven't been done.
- ☐ With the engine warm, turn the heat on full and check for weak heat, coolant smell, or a low reservoir, early signs of the known coolant bypass (flow shut-off) valve failure on 2.5L cars.
- ☐ Look under the car and along the front of the engine for pink/red coolant residue near the coolant valve area (driver's side of the 2.5L block).
- ☐ Test the touchscreen for several minutes: freezing, random reboots, or a black screen on 2018–2019 Entune units is common and has a software fix, but budget for a head unit if it persists.
- ☐ Check the oil level on the dipstick and ask for oil-change receipts; A25A engines run long factory intervals, and 10k-mile oil changes are where consumption complaints come from.
- ☐ On hybrids, verify 12V battery age and watch the dash for hybrid-system warnings on the test drive; the high-voltage pack itself rarely fails on this generation.

Motor oil

2.5L A25A-FKS gas and A25A-FXS hybrid: SAE 0W-16 full synthetic, 4.8 qt with a filter change (4.4 qt without), so one 5-quart jug does one change with a little left over. 0W-20 is an emergency stand-in only; go back to 0W-16 at the next change. NOT the V6. See the V6 entry below

Hybrid battery cooling intake filter

Near-miss warning: the similar G92DH-45010 is the Sienna's filter and G92DH-42010 the RAV4/Venza's, neither fits this car. Torn or damaged filters get replaced, not cleaned, per Toyota's bulletin

3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 only, and it takes SIX plugs. Iridium, gap 0.031 in (0.79 mm). Different plug from the four-cylinder above, which is why this is its own line. WATCH THE ENGINE CODE: Toyota 90919-01247 (Denso FK20HR11) is the plug for the older 2GR-FE V6 used through 2018 in other models, it cross-references against Camry searches, and it is not this engine. Ignition coil

Automatic transmission fluid

Engine coolant

Toyota Super Long Life Coolant, the pink 50/50 pre-diluted. Not the red LLC, and not concentrate. Capacity is 6.9 L on the 2.5L gas car and 8.6 L on the 3.5L V6. The hybrid runs two circuits, 6.1 L for the engine and a separate 1.8 L for the inverter, and both take the same pink coolant. First factory replacement is 100,000 miles, then every 50,000

Brake fluid

FMVSS 116 DOT 3 or DOT 4, SAE J1703/J1704. Toyota publishes no replacement mileage for this car, only a level and condition check, so a flush is a judgment call and not a factory item. A full flush takes roughly a quart, which is three of Toyota's 12 oz bottles or one 32 oz aftermarket bottle

Differential and transfer case oil

AWD trims only, and FWD cars have neither unit. GL-5 75W-85. These are two separate fills, rear differential 0.50 L and transfer case 0.45 L, so a single 1-quart bottle does not quite cover both jobs. Buy two

Front strut

FRONT struts only. The rear of this car takes shock absorbers, which are a separate entry. Check your trim before ordering. KYB splits this car two ways: the comfort trims (L, LE, XLE, Hybrid LE, Hybrid XLE) and the sport trims (SE, XSE, TRD, Hybrid SE) take different strut part numbers. Left and right are also different parts, so the safest buy is a front set in one box rather than two singles you have to match yourself. Rear dampers are a separate part not covered by this entry

Rear shock absorber

REAR only, and it is a shock rather than a strut, which is why one part number covers both rear corners instead of a handed left and right. Verified for the FWD, non-hybrid car: 48530-8Z055 on SE, XSE and Nightshade, 48530-8Z054 on XLE. Hybrid and AWD numbers are NOT confirmed here, so those owners should match by VIN before ordering

Front CV axle

Engine mount

The right-side engine mount is the one that fails on this car and it is engine-specific: 2.5L gas, 2.5L hybrid and 3.5L V6 all take different part numbers. Mounts are sold individually, but a worn mount rarely fails alone, which is why kits bundle the engine mount with the transmission and torque-rod mounts

Front lower control arm

Front lower control arm, sold per side, bushing and ball joint included. The bushings are not serviced separately on this car: pressing new rubber into the original arm costs more in labor than the complete arm costs, so the part to price is the arm. WATCH THE GENERATION on aftermarket listings. The widely stocked Moog RK621476 and RK621477 and the Mevotech CMS86181 and CMS86182 are catalogued for the 2012-2017 XV50 Camry, not this car, and they surface in searches for it. Buy against the 2018-2024 Toyota numbers below or confirm the aftermarket listing names the XV70 explicitly. Budget an alignment afterward

Tires

## Common Toyota Camry problems & repair costs

### Denso low-pressure fuel pump failure (engine stall)

$400–$900

fuel safety 2018–2020 ~any

**Symptoms:** Rough running, hesitation from a stop, engine that won't restart when hot, or a sudden stall, including at highway speed. The pump impeller was made from a resin that absorbs fuel, swells, and drags until the pump quits.

**Fix:** Replace the in-tank fuel pump assembly with the updated part. This is covered FREE under NHTSA recall 20V-012 and its expansion 20V-682 (part of a 1.5M+ vehicle US recall). Check the VIN before paying a dime. Out of pocket at an independent shop it's a $400–$900 job.

### Brake vacuum pump failure (loss of power brake assist)

$500–$1,200

brakes safety 2018–2019 ~any

**Symptoms:** Brake pedal suddenly feels rock-hard and the car takes much more pedal force to stop. Caused by a vane cap inside the engine-driven vacuum pump degrading, worse on cars with lots of idling and stop-and-go braking.

**Fix:** Dealer inspects and repairs or replaces the vacuum pump assembly FREE under NHTSA recall 21V-890 (about 227,000 US Camrys); a smaller 2018-only vacuum pump recall (18V-211) came earlier. Verify by VIN. Paying cash at an independent shop, a vacuum pump runs roughly $500–$1,200.

### 8-speed (UA80) hesitation, harsh or delayed shifting

$150–$3,500

transmission moderate 2018–2019 (occasionally later) ~from new

**Symptoms:** Pause-then-lurch when accelerating from a stop, hunting between gears at low speed, clunky 1–3 shifts, delayed engagement into drive or reverse. Rough shifting is the single most-complained-about issue on the 2018 Camry.

**Fix:** Most cars are fixed with the dealer software recalibration Toyota issued in multiple TSBs (T-SB-0160-18, T-SB-0043-19 and successors), a $150–$300 visit outside warranty. A small minority with mechanical damage (Toyota's UA80 assembly issue drew a class action) need a torque converter or transmission work at $1,800–$3,500. Test-drive behavior tells you which bucket a car is in.

### Coolant bypass valve (flow shut-off valve) leak: 2.5L

$350–$800

cooling moderate 2018–2021 (2.5L A25A) ~60k–120k mi

**Symptoms:** Slow coolant loss, pink residue on the driver's side of the engine, weak cabin heat, a P2681/P26AC-family code, or an 'Engine Maintenance Required' style warning. The valve's plastic housing and electric actuator fail from heat cycling.

**Fix:** Replace the electronically controlled coolant bypass valve and top off coolant. Toyota quietly acknowledged this with Customer Support Program 24TE04, extending coverage on many 2018–2021 cars (10 years/100k miles secondary coverage). Check the VIN with a dealer before paying. Independent-shop price is roughly $350–$800.

### Entune infotainment freezing, rebooting, blank screen

$100–$1,500

electrical minor 2018–2019 (Entune 3.0 units) ~any

**Symptoms:** Touchscreen freezes mid-drive, reboots on its own, goes black, or loses audio/backup-camera display until the car is cycled off and on.

**Fix:** Start with the dealer head-unit software update. Toyota's TSB T-SB-0045-22 (superseding T-SB-0003-20) covers intermittent freezing and rebooting and fixes most cars cheaply. Units that keep failing need a replacement head unit, which is where the $800–$1,500 numbers come from. 2020+ cars with Android Auto support complain far less.

Sources: [Go-Parts: Toyota audio system reboots/blank screens (incl. Camry, TSB refs)](https://www.go-parts.com/garage/audio-system-toyota-rav4-toyota-avalon-toyota-camry-2014-2025), [ToyotaNation: infotainment screen freezes thread](https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/infotainment-screen-freezes-any-ideas.1699129/)

Day-to-day, an XV70 Camry is about as cheap to own as a modern car gets: long service intervals, inexpensive parts everywhere, and no timing belt (chains on all engines). Two habits matter. First, don't stretch oil changes. The A25A runs thin 0W-16 oil, and the consumption complaints that exist almost all trace to 10,000-mile intervals; owners who change at 5,000–6,000 miles report clean engines past 200k. Second, on 2.5L cars keep an eye on the coolant level because of the bypass-valve issue. The hybrid adds no scary costs: the battery pack has a strong record on this generation and Toyota warranted 2020+ hybrid batteries for 10 years/150k miles. Budget normal wear: tires, brakes (hybrids barely eat pads), and a 12V battery every 4–6 years.

## How to fix common Toyota Camry problems (DIY)

### Oil and filter change (2.5L A25A, 0W-16)

easy 45 min–1 hr saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands or ramps, Oil filter wrench for a spin-on can (claw or strap type), 14mm socket for drain plug, Drain pan + funnel, Torque wrench

- Warm the engine briefly, then raise and support the front of the car.
- Pull the drain plug (14mm) and drain into a pan; install a fresh drain-plug gasket and snug the plug.
- Twist the spin-on filter off counterclockwise, wipe the mounting face clean, smear fresh oil on the new filter's rubber gasket, then thread it on by hand and tighten roughly three quarters of a turn past first contact. The 2.5L takes a spin-on can, not the cartridge element and 64mm cap wrench the 2012-2017 Camry used, and only the 3.5L V6 in this generation still runs a cartridge.
- Fill with 0W-16 full synthetic (about 4.8 quarts with filter on the 2.5L), start the engine, check for leaks.
- Re-check the level on the dipstick after a few minutes and reset the maintenance reminder.

### Cabin & engine air filter change

easy 20 min saves ~$60–$120

**Tools:** None (hands only; maybe a small screwdriver)

- Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to drop it past its stops, and pull the cabin filter cover.
- Slide in the new cabin filter with the airflow arrow pointing the direction marked on the housing.
- Under the hood, unclip the airbox lid, swap the engine panel filter, and re-clip the lid.

### Front brake pad replacement

moderate 1.5–2 hrs saves ~$150–$300

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands, Lug wrench or 21mm socket, 14mm/17mm sockets for caliper bolts, C-clamp or caliper piston tool, Brake grease

- Loosen the lugs, raise and support the car, and remove the front wheel.
- Remove the two caliper slide bolts and hang the caliper from the strut with wire, so it doesn't dangle by the hose.
- Slide out the old pads and shims; compress the caliper piston slowly with a clamp (crack the reservoir cap first).
- Grease the slide pins and pad contact points, fit the new pads and hardware, and remount the caliper.
- Torque the caliper bolts and lugs to spec, then pump the brake pedal firm BEFORE driving.

## The short version

The 2018–2024 Camry (the XV70 generation) is the car people mean when they say “just buy a Camry.” The engines (2.5L four, 3.5L V6, and the 2.5L hybrid) are all long-haul durable, and there’s no single generation-killing defect like a cracked block or a doomed CVT.

What it has instead is **paperwork risk concentrated in the early years**. 2018–2020 cars are covered by the huge Denso fuel-pump recall (the pump can quit and stall the car), and 2018–2019 cars have a second safety recall for a brake vacuum pump that can kill power brake assist. Both are fixed free at any Toyota dealer, forever, so the only bad version of these cars is one where nobody ever ran the VIN.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you look at the car in person. Open recalls aren’t dealbreakers. They’re a free dealer visit, but you want to know.

Then drive it like a commuter: stop-and-go, light throttle, low speed. The early 8-speed automatic is the generation’s most-complained-about component (hesitation from a stop, hunting, clunky low-gear shifts), and Toyota’s software updates fix most of it. A car that shifts smoothly today has either been updated or never needed it. A car that lurches gets a price adjustment or a pass.

On 2.5L cars, peek at the coolant reservoir and the driver’s side of the engine. The electric coolant bypass valve is this engine’s one known wear item, it leaks slowly rather than catastrophically, and Toyota’s customer support program 24TE04 covers many cars, another free-fix-if-you-know check.

## Which one to buy

**Hybrid** if you want the lowest running costs and the fewest known issues, since it skips the 8-speed entirely. **2021–2024** anything if you want zero recall homework. **V6** if you want the last of Toyota’s great naturally aspirated sixes in a family sedan; it left after 2024 and won’t be back.

**How this file is built:** failure modes, recall numbers, and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA recall documents, Toyota’s TSBs and customer support programs, CarComplaints data, and owner-forum reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

Myths, checked

## Viral car myths, checked against this car

Mostly False

### [Do shops lose money on cheap oil changes? We opened a real shop's books to find out.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/59-dollar-oil-change-loss-leader/)

A quick lube's true all-in cost is roughly $16–40 per car. Even a $59 special turns a gross profit before the upsells start. The 'below cost' story is only true at full-service shops doing far more work per visit, which is a different product wearing the same name.

Misleading

### [Is the "$2 liquid that stops any leak" really banned in 11 states?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-stop-leak-banned-11-states/)

Automotive stop-leak products are not banned in any US state. The products are real (Bar's Leaks, BlueDevil), they work in specific narrow situations, and they can permanently damage your cooling or oiling system if applied to the wrong leak.

Outdated

### [Does a "$1 mineral" really double car battery life? The Epsom-salt reality.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/1-dollar-mineral-doubles-battery-life-myth/)

The mineral is Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). It was a real desulfation hack for serviceable flooded-cell batteries 40+ years ago. It does not work on modern sealed AGM or EFB batteries, and trying it on yours will void the warranty without helping the battery.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Toyota Camry years should I avoid?

None are truly 'avoid' cars, but 2018 carries the most baggage: the roughest 8-speed transmission behavior plus both safety recalls (fuel pump and brake vacuum pump). A 2018–2020 car is fine IF the recall work is documented and the transmission shifts cleanly on your test drive. 2021–2024 cars are the cleanest pick.

### Was the Camry fuel pump recall fixed for free?

Yes. The Denso low-pressure fuel pump recall (NHTSA 20V-012, expanded under 20V-682) covers 2018–2020 Camrys and the fix, a new pump assembly, is free at any Toyota dealer with no expiration, since safety recalls don't expire. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy; an open recall is a half-day errand, not a dealbreaker.

### Is the 2018 Camry 8-speed transmission bad?

It's annoying more than fragile. The UA80 8-speed in early cars hesitates and shifts harshly at low speed, and Toyota issued several software updates that fix most of it. A small number of transmissions had a real mechanical defect that drew a class action, but wholesale failures are rare. If the car you're testing shifts smoothly, the updates have likely been done.

### How long will a 2018–2024 Camry last?

With basic maintenance, 200,000–300,000 miles is a realistic expectation for the 2.5L and the V6, and the hybrid has the same reputation. Toyota's power-split hybrid system is one of the most proven drivetrains ever made. The engines use timing chains, so there's no belt-replacement cliff.

### Is the Camry Hybrid worth buying used?

Yes. It's the pick of the generation. The A25A-FXS hybrid powertrain dodges the 8-speed transmission complaints entirely (it uses Toyota's eCVT), returns around 50 mpg on LE trim, and the battery pack has an excellent record, with 2020+ cars carrying a 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty. Just verify the fuel-pump recall on 2018–2020 hybrids like any other Camry.
