# Toyota Tacoma 2005–2015 · Maintenance schedule & cost to maintain

CarCaseFile editorial · filed 06-27-2026 · updated 09-23-2026

Scheduled service only, not the documented problems (those are on the [case file's problem list](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/toyota-tacoma-2005-2015/#own), with their own cost calculator). Every interval and cost range below is sourced, not estimated.

Where the manufacturer publishes separate normal and severe-condition schedules, this ledger defaults to the **severe** interval and says so. That's not us padding the numbers: a manufacturer's own severe-duty list usually describes ordinary driving, things like short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extended idling, dust or road salt. But the list is written per manufacturer and sometimes per model year, and some are far narrower than others, so each item's "why" text names what *this* manufacturer actually wrote and gives the normal-schedule number alongside it. Read the item, not this paragraph.

Cumulative cost

## What routine maintenance adds up to, by mileage

Running total of the independent-shop cost ranges below. Each bar is everything due by that point, added to everything before it.

Solid bar = low estimate, tint = high estimate. This is a routine-maintenance floor, not a total cost of ownership. Fuel, insurance, tires, and any of the documented problems above are separate. Items that recur more than once per interval under a severe-duty schedule (an air filter due every 5k, say) are counted here at one occurrence, not the full repeat total. The real cumulative spend for a high-mileage severe-duty driver runs higher than this chart shows.

## Every 5,000 mi or 6 months (oil service)

### Engine oil and filter, 4.0L V6 (1GR-FE)

$131–$178 DIY-realistic

Toyota's 2005-2015 Tacoma guides print one oil interval, every 5,000 miles or 6 months, and their special-conditions lists add no oil item, so no shorter severe number exists. The 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals give SAE 5W-30 and 4.8 qt with filter on 2WD trucks other than the PreRunner, 5.5 qt on 4WD and PreRunner. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $131-$178.

On this generation

- Toyota's special operating conditions on this truck are towing, dirt or dusty roads, and salted roads, and a car-top carrier or heavy loading in the 2012 (2.7L) and 2013-2015 guides. Toyota says to add those services only if you drive primarily that way. Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, hot or cold weather and idling are not on the Tacoma list.

### Engine oil and filter, 2.7L four-cylinder (2TR-FE)

$131–$178 DIY-realistic

Same Toyota interval as the V6 in every 2005-2015 guide: 5,000 miles or 6 months, no shorter severe number. Capacity is 6.1 qt with filter in the 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals. The grade changed: 5W-30 in the 2005 and 2006 manuals, 5W-20 or 0W-20 in 2007, 2008 and 2010, 0W-20 in 2011. We read no 2009 or 2012-2015 manual, so check yours.

On this generation

- The 2012-2015 guides print the 2.7L schedule under a SYNTHETIC label and the 4.0L under NON-SYNTHETIC, and both still change oil every 5,000 miles. Synthetic on the four-cylinder does not earn a longer interval in Toyota's book.
- The 2.7L and the V6 take different Toyota oil filters. Toyota's filter chart lists 90915-YZZG1 for 2005-2010 four-cylinders, 90915-YZZD1 for 2011-2015, and 90915-YZZD3 for the V6, so the V6 filter card on this page is not the four-cylinder's part.

### Propeller shaft grease and bolt re-torque, 4WD (severe-schedule default)

DIY-realistic

In the 2007-2015 guides, Toyota greases the 4WD propeller shaft every 15,000 miles, and every 5,000 when towing, on dirt or dusty roads, or on salted roads, so 5,000 is the default for a truck used that way. In the 2011-2015 guides the rows also name 2.7L PreRunners. The 2005 and 2006 guides print no grease row for the Tacoma, only the bolt re-torque.

## 15,000 mi (towing: differential oil)

### Front and rear differential oil (severe-schedule default: towing)

DIY-realistic

Every 2005-2015 guide replaces the rear differential oil, and the front on 4WD, every 15,000 miles when towing. Otherwise Toyota only inspects it, except a limited-slip rear axle on PreRunner and 4WD trucks, which the 2005-2011 guides replace every 30,000 miles. The 2012-2015 guides drop that row.

On this generation

- The oil changed. The 2005-2008 manuals call for hypoid gear oil API GL-5, 75W-90 front and SAE 90 rear, with limited-slip oil in a limited-slip axle. The 2010 and 2011 manuals call for Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT 75W-85 GL-5 and list a larger rear fill. Buy to your own year's manual.

## 20,000 mi

### Cabin air filter

$79–$102 DIY-realistic

The 2007-2015 guides replace the cabin air filter every 20,000 miles. The 2005 and 2006 guides say every 30,000, if equipped. Toyota's cabin filter chart starts the Tacoma at 2006, and the March 2005 printing of the manual has no filter section, so check behind the glovebox on a 2005. RepairPal's 2006-2015 rows: $79-$102.

## 30,000 mi

### Engine air filter

$68–$91 DIY-realistic

Every 2005-2015 guide replaces it every 30,000 miles. On dirt or dusty roads Toyota adds an inspection at every 5,000-mile visit and prints no shorter replacement interval, so on a dusty truck replace it when that inspection finds it dirty. The V6 and the 2.7L take different filters. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $68-$91.

### Spark plugs, 4.0L V6 only (every 30,000 mi)

$254–$357 DIY-realistic

Toyota's guides for every year from 2005 to 2015 replace the V6's plugs every 30,000 miles, a service Toyota ties to the emissions warranty. The 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals spec a non-iridium plug for the V6, Denso K20HR-U11 or NGK LFR6C11. The 2.7L is on 120,000 miles. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $254-$357.

On this generation

- A 120,000-mile plug interval quoted for this V6 is the four-cylinder's number. Toyota's manuals restrict iridium plugs to the 2.7L and list a standard plug for the V6, and every guide we read keeps the V6 at 30,000.

### Transfer case oil, 4WD (severe-schedule default: towing or dirt roads)

DIY-realistic

Every 2005-2015 guide replaces transfer case oil every 30,000 miles when towing, and the 2011-2015 guides add dirt or dusty roads to the same rows. Otherwise Toyota only inspects it every 30,000 miles. The 2005, 2010 and 2011 manuals list 1.1 qt of gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5, SAE 75W-90.

### Manual transmission oil (severe-schedule default: towing)

DIY-realistic

The 2007-2015 guides replace manual transmission oil every 30,000 miles when towing: as manual transmission oil at 30,000 and 90,000, and as transmission fluid or oil at 60,000 and 120,000. The 2005 and 2006 guides print no manual-transmission row for the Tacoma. Fill per the 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals: GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90, 2.7 qt (2.7L 2WD), 2.3 qt (2.7L 4WD), 1.9 qt (V6).

## 60,000 mi

### Automatic transmission fluid (severe-schedule default: towing)

$243–$277 Shop job

Every 2005-2015 guide replaces automatic transmission fluid at 60,000 and 120,000 miles when towing, and the 2012 (2.7L) and 2013-2015 guides add a car-top carrier or heavy loading. Otherwise Toyota only inspects it every 30,000. The 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals list a 4-speed automatic on ATF Type T-IV and a 5-speed on ATF WS. RepairPal: $243-$277.

On this generation

- The 2005-2008 manuals say to change automatic fluid only if the truck is driven under one of the special operating conditions. Toyota warns that a fluid other than the one your transmission takes can cause poor shifting and damage, and the 4-speed and 5-speed take different fluids, so name your transmission when you book it.

### Valve clearance inspection, 4.0L V6 only

Shop job

Every 2005-2015 guide inspects the V6's valve clearance at 60,000 and 120,000 miles, checking for tappet noise and engine vibration and adjusting only if needed. The 2.7L is excluded: its manuals list automatic valve adjustment. No distinct severe interval is printed.

### Drive belt (inspect from 60,000 mi)

$114–$174 DIY-realistic

Toyota's guides inspect the drive belts first at 60,000 miles or 72 months and every 15,000 miles after, and print no replacement mileage: replace a belt with cracks, heavy wear or oil on it. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $114-$174.

### Front brake pads (wear-based)

$261–$365 DIY-realistic

No replacement mileage. Toyota's guides look at the pads at every 5,000-mile visit and measure thickness and disc runout every 30,000. The 2010 and 2011 manuals give a 0.04 in. (1.0 mm) pad wear limit. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $261-$365.

### Shocks (wear-based)

$634–$933 DIY-realistic

No Toyota interval; shocks wear with load and rough roads, often in the 50,000-100,000 mile range. Worn shocks cup and scallop tires even with a good alignment. On a 2005-2011 truck, confirm the rear leaf-spring recall was done before paying for rear shocks, since a cracked leaf also makes the rear sag and clunk. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows: $634-$933.

### Control arm bushings (wear-based)

$297–$473 Shop job

No Toyota interval; bushings typically last 70,000-120,000 miles, less on rough roads or in harsh climates, and rubber ages out by 8-10 years even at low mileage. Worn bushings let the wheels move, so a fresh alignment will not hold: replace them before paying for one. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows: $297-$473.

### Engine mounts (wear-based)

$219–$428 Shop job

No Toyota interval and no mount weak point we could verify for this generation. Rubber and hydraulic mounts degrade with age and torque load, typically 80,000-150,000 miles. Symptoms: a clunk shifting into drive or reverse, vibration at idle in gear, the engine lurching under throttle. RepairPal's rows: $219-$259 (2005-2007), $243-$294 (2008-2014), $377-$428 (2015).

### CV boots, 4WD front axles (inspect)

Shop job

Toyota inspects the drive shaft boots on 4WD trucks every 15,000 miles, and at every 5,000-mile visit when driving on dirt roads. A torn boot throws grease onto the brakes and lets dirt into the joint, and a boot caught early is far cheaper than the axle it protects.

### Wheel alignment (event-triggered)

$146–$215 Shop job

Not a Toyota mileage item. Align after new tires, any suspension or steering work, or a hard hit, and check it about once a year. New tires on a misaligned truck wear out early, and worn bushings (above) keep an alignment from holding. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $146-$215.

### Tires: same size, brand and tread on all four

Shop job

Toyota's guides rotate tires at every 5,000-mile visit. The 2005 manual says 4WD trucks need the same brand and tread pattern on all four tires, and the 2010 manual says all tires must match in size, brand, tread pattern and load capacity or the ABS and VSC will not work correctly. Match the tire type to real use: an all-terrain tire on a commuter truck costs grip and tread life.

On this generation

- The 2005 manual warns that a spare of a different size, construction or load capacity could damage the limited-slip differential. On a truck with the limited-slip rear axle, do not run a mismatched spare longer than you have to.

## 100,000 mi or 120 months, then every 50,000 mi or 60 months (coolant)

### Engine coolant

$235–$287 DIY-realistic

Every 2005-2015 guide replaces the coolant first at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months, with no shorter severe interval. Toyota bases that on Toyota Super Long Life Coolant or an equivalent non-silicate, non-amine, non-borate hybrid organic acid coolant, and warns another type may change the interval. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows: $235-$287.

## 120,000 mi

### Spark plugs, 2.7L four-cylinder only

$254–$357 DIY-realistic

Toyota replaces the 2.7L's plugs at 120,000 miles in every 2005-2015 guide. The 2005-2008, 2010 and 2011 manuals spec iridium Denso SK20HR11 (NGK ILFR6C11 also listed except in 2011) and say to use only iridium-tipped plugs and not to adjust the gap. RepairPal's 2005-2015 rows run $254-$357.

## 5 years (any mileage)

### Battery

$247–$264 DIY-realistic

Toyota's guides print no battery interval, so treat it by age: load-test from year 3 and replace by year 5 at any mileage.
