# Toyota Tundra 2007–2021 Common problems, reliability & repair costs

The second-generation Tundra is one of the longest-lived, most proven full-size trucks you can buy used. 5.7L trucks routinely clear 300,000 miles. The catches are specific: a secondary air injection system that fails expensively on 2007–2013 trucks (Toyota's warranty extension has expired), cam tower oil seepage on the 5.7, and frame rust on 2007–2008 trucks that lived in salt states. Late trucks (2019–2021) are about as safe as used pickups get.

Verdict

## Should I buy a 2007–2021 Toyota Tundra?

Buy it. The 5.7L Tundra earned its reputation honestly, and a maintained one is a realistic 300,000-mile truck. But buy by year and by history, not by badge. On 2007–2013 trucks, price in the secondary air injection system: Toyota's 10-year/150,000-mile warranty extension has expired on every one of them, and the repair runs well into four figures. On 2007–2008 trucks from salt states, the frame-rust warranty enhancement is also expired, so crawl under it before you talk numbers. Any high-mileage 5.7 should be checked for cam tower seepage and water pump weep. The 2019–2021 trucks combine the fully sorted drivetrain with the fewest complaints on record and are the pick if the budget reaches.

Years to avoid

2007 (first-year teething: early-production camshaft failures, most air-pump complaints), 2012 (CarComplaints' worst Tundra year: air-injection failures at lower mileage), 2007–2008 rust-belt trucks with no frame documentation (ZH7 program expired)

### Pre-Purchase Checklist for Toyota Tundra

[Open Field Checklist Page ->](https://carcasefile.com/vehicles/toyota-tundra-2007-2021/checklist/)

- ☐ Crawl under the truck and inspect the frame, especially 2007–2008 and any truck from a salt state. Probe crossmembers and rails near the rear wheels with a screwdriver; flaking scale is one thing, perforation is a walk-away or a frame-replacement negotiation.
- ☐ Scan for stored/pending codes before the test drive. P0412, P0415, P2440–P2445 point to the secondary air injection system, a repair that can run $1,500–$4,000 on 2007–2013 trucks.
- ☐ Ask whether the air injection pump was ever replaced under Toyota's warranty extension (a Toyota dealer can check the VIN's service history).
- ☐ Cold-start it. A ticking from the engine bay that fades as it warms is the classic cracked/leaking exhaust manifold tell on the 5.7.
- ☐ Look down both sides of the 5.7's valve covers and the back of the engine for oil seep tracks. Cam tower leaks show up as a wet film or drips on the bellhousing area.
- ☐ Check the front of the engine for pink, crusty coolant residue below the water pump, the weep-hole leak that precedes pump failure.
- ☐ On 2018–2019 trucks, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the low-pressure fuel pump recall (20V-012) was completed.

Known faults

## Common Toyota Tundra problems & repair costs

### Secondary air injection system failure

$1,500–$4,000

emissions severe 2007–2013 (worst 2007–2012, 5.7L and 4.7L) ~60k–120k mi

**Symptoms:** Check engine light with codes P0412, P0415, P0418, or P2440–P2445; on many trucks the ECU forces reduced power (limp mode) until it's fixed. Moisture corrodes the air pumps and sticks the switching valves; sometimes the actual culprit is only a cracked vacuum hose.

**Fix:** Replace the failed air pump(s) and/or air switching valves. Parts alone are four figures if both banks go. Toyota ran Customer Support Program ZTQ (2007–2010 trucks) and ZG6 (2011) extending coverage to 10 years/150,000 miles, but that window has closed on every affected truck, so today it's out of pocket. Diagnose carefully first: a $10 hose or a corroded connector gets misquoted as a $3,000 pump job more often than you'd think. Emissions-defeat 'bypass kits' sold online are not street-legal.

### Cam tower oil leaks (5.7L 3UR-FE)

$2,000–$5,000

engine moderate 2007–2021 (most reported on 2010–2018 builds) ~80k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Oil seeping from the seam where the cam towers meet the cylinder heads. It shows up as wet streaks down the back or sides of the engine and drips near the bellhousing. Usually a slow seep, not a gusher; the engine keeps running fine.

**Fix:** Resealing means pulling the cams and towers and re-applying sealant (FIPG). The parts cost is trivial, the labor is brutal, which is why quotes range from about $2,000 at an independent to $5,000+ at a dealer. Toyota never issued a recall; a class-action investigation was opened in 2018. Many owners monitor and top off instead of fixing a minor seep, a defensible call, but use it to negotiate the price.

### Frame rust (2007–2008)

$300–$15,000

chassis safety 2007–2008 (salt-state trucks) ~Age/exposure-driven, not mileage-driven

**Symptoms:** Heavy scale and flaking on the frame rails and crossmembers, progressing to rust-through. In advanced cases, spare-tire crossmembers and brake-line mounting points are compromised.

**Fix:** Following a class-action settlement, Toyota ran Warranty Enhancement Program ZH7: 2007–2008 Tundra frames that failed a perforation inspection were replaced free for 12 years from first use. Every truck has aged out of that program now. Today the realistic range runs from a few hundred dollars of rust treatment on surface scale to a five-figure frame swap on a perforated truck, which usually totals the vehicle. Inspect before buying; a truck with a documented replacement frame is a plus, not a red flag.

### Water pump weep-hole coolant leak (5.7L)

$500–$1,100

cooling moderate 2007–2021 ~60k–150k mi

**Symptoms:** Pink crusty residue (dried Toyota coolant) on the front of the engine below the pump, slow coolant loss, eventually bearing noise. The weep hole leaking is the pump's bearing seal announcing the end.

**Fix:** Replace the water pump; a drip from the weep hole doesn't self-heal. It's a bolt-on job on the 5.7 (no timing teardown, chain engine), so an independent shop is markedly cheaper than a dealer. Do the thermostat while it's apart if it's original.

### Exhaust manifold leak / ticking (5.7L)

$1,000–$1,900

exhaust moderate 2007–2021 ~80k+ mi

**Symptoms:** Ticking or chuffing from the engine bay on cold start that quiets down as the engine warms and the metal expands. Sometimes a faint exhaust smell. Caused by a cracked manifold or failed manifold gasket.

**Fix:** Replace the leaking manifold (or just the gasket if you're lucky), roughly 4 hours of labor per side, which is most of the bill. It won't strand you, so many owners live with the cold-start tick for years; just know the fix costs real money when the noise starts bothering you or it fails inspection.

### Low-pressure fuel pump failure: Denso recall (2018–2019)

$0–$900

fuel safety 2018–2019

**Symptoms:** Rough running, warning lights, and potential engine stall without restart, including at highway speed. Part of the massive Denso fuel pump recall across Toyota's lineup.

**Fix:** NHTSA recall 20V-012: Toyota dealers replace the in-tank low-pressure fuel pump free, no time limit. Recalls don't expire. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before buying and get it done if open. The cost range above is only for a pump failing outside the recall's VIN scope.

Sources: [NHTSA recall 20V-012: 2018 Toyota Tundra fuel pump](https://auto-recalls.justia.com/toyota/tundra/2018/20v012000/), [NHTSA: Toyota 20V-012 defect notice (PDF)](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2020/RCMN-20V012-7781.pdf)

Day to day, a Tundra is cheap to own for a full-size truck: the drivetrain is under-stressed, parts are plentiful, and there's no turbo, no direct-injection carbon problem, and no CVT. Budget for gas. The 5.7 is thirsty (13–17 mpg real-world). Add brakes and tires, which big heavy trucks eat. The money risks are the specific items above: an air-injection bill on a 2007–2013 truck, a cam tower reseal you can usually defer, and one water pump somewhere past 100k. Skip trucks with frame rot entirely; everything else is negotiable.

DIY repairs

## How to fix common Toyota Tundra problems (DIY)

### Front brake pad replacement

moderate 1.5–2.5 hrs saves ~$200–$400

**Tools:** Floor jack + jack stands, Lug wrench / 21mm socket, Hammer and punch (pad retaining pins), Large C-clamp or pad spreader, Brake cleaner and anti-squeal grease

- Loosen the lugs, jack the front end, set it on stands, and pull the wheels.
- On the big 4-piston front calipers, remove the anti-rattle clip and drive out the two pad retaining pins. No need to unbolt the caliper.
- Slide the old pads out, then press the pistons back with a spreader or C-clamp against an old pad (crack the reservoir cap first and watch the fluid level).
- Grease the pad backing plates and shims, slide the new pads in, and reinstall the pins and clip.
- Refit the wheels, torque the lugs, and pump the pedal firm before moving. Bed the pads with a series of moderate stops.

Parts

### Engine & cabin air filter change

easy 15–20 min saves ~$50–$100

**Tools:** None (hand tools optional for airbox clips)

- Unclip the airbox lid on the driver's side of the engine bay, lift it, and swap in the new panel filter.
- Open the glovebox, squeeze the sides to drop it past its stops, and pull the cabin filter cover.
- Slide the old cabin filter out, insert the new one with the airflow arrow pointing down, and reassemble.

### Serpentine belt replacement (5.7L)

easy 30–45 min saves ~$100–$200

**Tools:** Breaker bar or serpentine belt tool (19mm), Belt routing diagram (photograph the old belt first)

- Photograph the belt routing or find the diagram. The 5.7 uses one long belt around everything.
- Put the breaker bar on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slip the belt off, check the tensioner and idler pulleys for play or roughness while you're in there.
- Route the new belt per the diagram, rotate the tensioner again, and seat the belt on the last pulley.
- Double-check the belt is centered in every pulley groove, then start the engine and watch it run for a minute.

## The short version

The 2007–2021 Tundra is the truck that built Toyota’s modern full-size reputation, and the core of it, the 5.7-liter 3UR-FE V8 and its 6-speed automatic, is about as durable as gasoline drivetrains get. These trucks pass 300,000 miles often enough that nobody’s surprised anymore.

The money problems are all around the edges of that drivetrain. The **secondary air injection system** on 2007–2013 trucks corrodes and fails, throws the truck into reduced power, and costs $1,500–$4,000 to fix properly, and Toyota’s 10-year/150,000-mile goodwill coverage has expired on every affected truck. The 5.7 also likes to seep oil from its **cam towers** (a labor-heavy reseal, never recalled) and coolant from the **water pump weep hole**. And **2007–2008 frames** can rot in salt states; the class-action replacement program is done.

## What that means when you’re shopping

Shop the years, not the badge. **2019–2021** trucks have the fully sorted drivetrain, the fewest complaints on record, and none of the early-year baggage. They cost more because they’re worth more. **2013–2018** is the value zone: past the worst air-injection years, still plenty of truck left.

On **2007–2013** trucks, plug in a scanner before you drive it. Air-injection codes (P0412, P2440–P2445) are a four-figure negotiation item, not a mystery. On **2007–2008** trucks, the frame is the whole conversation: crawl under with a screwdriver and probe the rails and crossmembers. Surface scale is normal truck aging; perforation means you walk or you’re buying a frame.

One historical footnote: a batch of very early 2007 5.7s broke camshafts due to a supplier casting defect. Toyota replaced those engines outright. Nearly two decades later, it’s not something you’ll encounter, but it’s part of why 2007 tops the complaint charts.

## The stuff that’s just truck ownership

Fast brake wear, thirsty V8, cold-start exhaust-manifold tick that fades as it warms. Annoying, known, and priced into these trucks. On 2018–2019 models, confirm the Denso fuel pump recall (20V-012) is closed; it’s free at any Toyota dealer, forever.

**How this file is built:** failure modes and cost ranges are compiled from NHTSA complaint and recall data, Toyota’s own customer support program bulletins, CarComplaints data, and owner-forum reporting, then sanity-checked against shop-floor experience. Cost figures are independent-shop estimates and vary by region. Spot something off? [Tell us](https://carcasefile.com/disclaimer/).

### [Does a "$3 liquid" really kill car rust permanently? The phosphoric-acid reality.](https://carcasefile.com/claims/3-dollar-rust-killer-permanent/)

The $3 liquid is almost certainly phosphoric acid (sold as Ospho or Naval Jelly). It converts surface rust to iron phosphate. It does not kill rust 'permanently,' does not restore perforated steel, and was never buried by anyone. It has been on hardware store shelves continuously since the 1940s.

Misleading

### [Is the "$2 liquid that stops any leak" really banned in 11 states?](https://carcasefile.com/claims/2-dollar-stop-leak-banned-11-states/)

Automotive stop-leak products are not banned in any US state. The products are real (Bar's Leaks, BlueDevil), they work in specific narrow situations, and they can permanently damage your cooling or oiling system if applied to the wrong leak.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which Toyota Tundra years should I avoid?

2007 (first-year teething, including early-production camshaft failures Toyota fixed with new engines under warranty) and 2012, which CarComplaints rates the worst Tundra year on the strength of air-injection failures at lower mileage. Also treat any 2007–2008 truck from a salt state as suspect until you've inspected the frame. The free-replacement program has expired. The 2019–2021 trucks have the fewest complaints of the entire generation.

### How many miles will a 5.7 Tundra last?

The 3UR-FE 5.7L is genuinely a 300,000-mile engine with routine oil changes. Million-mile examples exist, and the internals almost never fail. What you'll actually replace along the way: a water pump, possibly an air injection pump on 2007–2013 trucks, brakes, and suspension wear items. The engine is usually the last thing to go.

### Is the secondary air injection repair still covered by Toyota?

No. Toyota extended coverage to 10 years/150,000 miles via customer support programs (ZTQ for 2007–2010, ZG6 for 2011), but every eligible truck has aged out. Today it's an out-of-pocket repair that commonly runs $1,500–$4,000. That is exactly why you scan for codes P0412/P2440–P2445 before buying.

### Do I have to fix a cam tower oil leak?

Not immediately, in most cases. It's typically a slow seep that never strands anyone. Many owners just check the oil and drive. The reseal is quoted at $2,000–$5,000 because of labor, so if a truck you're buying has it, negotiate accordingly rather than walking away. Fix it if the leak reaches the exhaust (fire/smell risk) or the drip rate becomes real oil consumption.

### Is Tundra frame rust as bad as the older trucks?

Less widespread than the 2000–2003 recall-level problem, but real: 2007–2008 trucks got a class-action warranty enhancement (ZH7) with free frame replacement for 12 years, now expired. Trucks that lived outside the rust belt are usually fine. Wherever it's from, put it on a lift and probe the frame before money changes hands.
