BMW 3 Series 2012–2018 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
On 2012–2015 320i/328i: get proof the timing chain, guides, and oil pump drive chain were replaced. No proof = listen for a whining/rattling chain on cold start and price a $1,800–$3,500 job into your offer.
-
Run the VIN through BMW/NHTSA recall lookup — check the water pump connector recall (24V-608) on N20/N26 cars and the EGR-cooler recall (18V-755) on the 328d.
-
Cold start the car yourself. Rattle on startup, a rough idle, or a drivetrain malfunction message are walk-away signs on N20 cars.
-
Inspect the engine from below for oil leaks — oil filter housing and valve cover gaskets leak on nearly every high-mileage F30, and oil dripping onto the belt or wiring makes it worse.
-
Check coolant level and look for dried pink/white residue around the plastic expansion tank, hoses, and water pump — the cooling system is plastic and age-brittle.
-
On 335i/340i: look for boost leaks or a replaced charge pipe (aluminum aftermarket pipe = a plus; the factory plastic one cracks).
-
Verify the ZF 8-speed shifts crisply and has a fluid-service record if over ~70k miles.
-
Skip the ActiveHybrid 3 unless priced very cheap — battery age and rarity make it a parts-availability headache.
2012–2014 320i/328i (N20/N26 timing chain guide failure) unless chain work is documented · Early-2015 328i built before the January 2015 chain redesign · Any 328d without the EGR-cooler recall completed
