Ford Mustang 2010–2014 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls FIRST. 2005–2014 Mustangs are in the Takata driver-airbag inflator recall — confirm the repair was actually performed, not just issued.
-
On MT82 manual cars (2011–2014): drive it stone cold. Balky cold 1-2 shifts, grinding into 2nd or 3rd, or lockout at high RPM are the documented complaints — walk away or price accordingly.
-
Inspect the leading edge and underside of the aluminum hood for paint bubbling/blistering. It looks like rust but is aluminum corrosion from iron contamination, and a proper repair is a repaint or a new hood.
-
Pull the carpet edge or feel the passenger-side floor for dampness, and check the spare-tire well. Clogged cowl drains dumping water into the cabin is a known S197 issue.
-
On the highway at 55–80 mph, listen for a steady rear-end whine that changes with speed, especially on 3.73-gear cars — a documented axle noise issue with its own TSB history.
-
On 5.0 GTs, let it idle warm and listen for the intermittent 'BBQ tick.' Ford calls it normal, but you want to know what you're hearing before you own it.
-
Check the oil level and ask about consumption between changes on Coyote cars; some use a noticeable amount.
-
On GT500s, verify service history and look for track use and tune history — these were frequently modified.
