Ford Ranger 2024–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before anything else. The 2024 alone carries 13 campaigns — including the power-window pinch (24V-597), front upper ball joint (24V-770), transmission valve body (25V-164), rearview camera software (25V-315), and the A-pillar wiring fire risk (26V-238). Every one is a free fix; confirm they're done.

  2. Check 02

On a 2025 or 2026 with the 2.3L: ask the dealer where the truck stands on recall 26S35 (camshaft roller finger followers — remedy is a full engine long block, repairs expected from November 2026) and 26S10 (EGR valve poppet detachment — replacement valves expected around September 2026). A ticking or tapping 2.3 with a check-engine light is the 26S35 symptom — walk away or make the recall Ford's problem first.

  3. Check 03

Work the 10R60 on the test drive: stop-and-go, rolling stops, and a full lift-off at highway speed. The documented complaints are a clunk or jump on deceleration, a double-clunk into gear at startup, shudder pulling away from a stop, and gear hunting. Delayed or absent reverse is the 25S19 valve-body red flag.

  4. Check 04

Watch the dash through the whole drive. A cascade of warnings — Steering Assist Fault, ABS, AdvanceTrac, Hill Start Assist, Pre-Collision — usually traces to a failed wheel-speed sensor on this truck; ask whether one has already been replaced.

  5. Check 05

Cycle the 4WD system through 2H/4A/4L. A small number of NHTSA complaints describe the truck switching drive modes on its own at speed — confirm the selector behaves and no drivetrain faults appear.

  6. Check 06

Check the backup camera for freezing, lag, or a black screen, and confirm the 25S49 APIM software update was applied — the 2024 Ranger is part of Ford's 1.07-million-vehicle rearview camera recall.

  7. Check 07

On a 2024 built between January 4 and July 15, 2024: if you plan a bed cap, rack, or rail-mounted anything, check for the load-box reinforcement brackets. Early trucks shipped without them, and owner reports put the unreinforced bed-rail limit around 88 lbs per rail. The J-brace kit is roughly $160–$170 in parts.

  8. Check 08

Confirm remaining factory warranty (3yr/36k bumper-to-bumper, 5yr/60k powertrain). Most of what goes wrong with this generation is a warranty or recall event — a truck with coverage left is worth real money over one without.

Walk-away signals

Early 2024 builds (Jan–Jul 2024) until every campaign is verified closed — this window catches the most recalls plus the missing bed load-box brackets · 2025–early-2026 2.3L trucks with recalls 26S35 (engine long block) or 26S10 (EGR valve) still open — both remedies were waiting on parts until roughly fall 2026
