GMC Acadia 2017–2023 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before anything else — this generation has real ones: the 2017–2018 high-pressure fuel pump recall (18V-358, fire risk) and a 2020 fuel-pump jet-nozzle stalling recall among them. All should show closed.

2. Check 02

   On 2017–2019 cars: shift to Park and shut the car off several times. If it ever throws a 'Shift to Park' message while already in Park, the shifter assembly is faulty — ask whether the updated shifter assembly or wiring harness was ever installed.

3. Check 03

   On 2017–2019 (6-speed): hold light throttle at 25–45 mph and around 60–70 mph and feel for a rumble-strip vibration — classic torque-converter clutch shudder. A fluid exchange may fix it; a bad converter is a four-figure job.

4. Check 04

   On 2020–2023 (9-speed): drive in stop-and-go traffic and feel the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts for flare, slam, or hesitation. Pull service records for transmission reprogramming, fluid exchanges, or replacement — a replaced unit is fine, an ignored complaint is not.

5. Check 05

   Test the A/C hard on a warm day. The condenser on these leaks refrigerant often enough that GM wrote a TSB about it, and 'blows cold at pickup, warm in July' is the standard story.

6. Check 06

   Check for slow battery drain: ask if the battery has been replaced repeatedly, and watch the dash shutdown when you switch off — electronics staying awake is part of the shifter-defect pattern on early cars.

7. Check 07

   Verify oil-change history on the 2.0T and 3.6L (both are direct-injected and hard on oil intervals), and confirm auto stop/start restarts smoothly without a clunk.
