Hyundai Elantra 2021–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before anything else. Early years carry up to six campaigns — pretensioners (22V-354), windshield bonding (21V-00M), seat recliners (21V-302), rearview camera (24V-879) — every one a free fix.

  2. Check 02

On a 2021 key-start (twist-the-key) car: confirm the free anti-theft software update was installed (dealer verifies by VIN; updated cars got a window decal). Push-button-start cars have an immobilizer and were never vulnerable.

  3. Check 03

Quote your insurance on the exact VIN before buying a 2021 — insurers price the Hyundai/Kia theft wave even on updated cars.

  4. Check 04

On 2021 2.0L cars, look for dried coolant residue around the water-temperature sensor on the cylinder head and ask whether campaign T8F was performed.

  5. Check 05

During the test drive, watch the cluster: multiple warning lights flashing on at once (EPS, AEB, master warning) is the documented electrical complaint on 2021–2022 cars. Have the 12V battery tested.

  6. Check 06

Hybrid: creep at parking-lot speed and accelerate from a rolling stop. A 1–2 second dead pause means the DCT clutch-actuator update hasn't been done. Confirm recall 248 (23V-589, unintended-acceleration software) is closed.

  7. Check 07

Elantra N: confirm recall 236 (22V-746, DCT oil pump) is closed on DCT cars, then inspect like any tracked car — tires, brake life, and a clean cold start.

  8. Check 08

Back the car up: the rearview camera should display instantly and stay on — flickering or a black screen is the 24V-879 solder-joint failure.

Walk-away signals

No hard avoids — but on a 2021 key-start car, confirm the free anti-theft update (no factory immobilizer) and expect higher insurance quotes · Early-build 2021s: verify windshield-bonding (21V-00M), seat-recliner (21V-302), and pretensioner (22V-354) recall work is done — all free
