Hyundai Santa Fe 2007–2012 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Identify the engine and build date: 2.7L/3.3L (2007–2009) or 2.4L/3.5L (2010–2012). For a 2.4L 2012 model, have a Hyundai dealer check the VIN against recall 20V-746 / Campaign 198 (engine inspection, built Jan 10–Jul 3, 2012).

2. Check 02

   Watch the fuel gauge over a full tank-to-empty cycle if possible, especially on 2007–2008 cars — a sensor that reads inaccurately or sticks is the single most-reported issue on this generation.

3. Check 03

   On any 3.3L or 3.5L V6, listen for a rattle for the first 3–5 seconds at cold start — a classic timing-chain-tensioner symptom covered by Hyundai TSB #06-20-002 / #08-EM-001-1.

4. Check 04

   Confirm the stop-lamp-switch recall (NHTSA 13V-113, 2007–2011) was completed — a bad switch can kill the brake lights or trap the cruise control on.

5. Check 05

   On 2007–2008 cars, confirm the airbag clock-spring recall was performed (driver airbag deployment risk).

6. Check 06

   Check for a tow-package wiring harness on 2009–2011 models — a recalled harness can let moisture into the converter module.

7. Check 07

   Test-drive with the A/C on and check all electrical accessories; this generation logged high NHTSA electrical-complaint volume.

8. Check 08

   Get a full pre-purchase inspection focused on suspension bushings and CV boots — ordinary wear items on a 12–18 year old SUV, not generation-specific but worth budgeting for.
