Jeep Wrangler 2018–present · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls before you view the truck. The JL carries several serious campaigns: power-steering-pump wiring fire (26V-363, all 2021–2025), clutch pressure plate (23V-116, 2018–2023 manuals), 4xe high-voltage battery (latest 25V-741) and 4xe engine debris (25V-766), and the EcoDiesel high-pressure fuel pump.

2. Check 02

   Test drive at 55+ mph over broken pavement. Any sustained shimmy after a bump, wandering, or a dead spot on-center is the known steering issue — walk or budget for damper, steering gear, and possibly track bar.

3. Check 03

   On 2018–2019 cars, ask for service records showing the V41 steering-damper campaign and, ideally, the steering-gear replacement under TSB 08-074-20.

4. Check 04

   On the 3.6L, listen for a ticking/tapping at cold idle (rocker-arm/lifter wear) and check the rear of the engine valley for oil seep — the classic plastic oil filter housing leak.

5. Check 05

   On manuals, confirm the clutch recall (23V-116) repair is closed; on 4xe, confirm the battery (25V-741) and engine-debris (25V-766) remedies are done — an open 'park outside, do not charge' recall is a dealbreaker until fixed.

6. Check 06

   On 2024+ refresh trucks, cycle the 12.3-inch Uconnect screen and the backup camera through a few restarts — black-screen radios, 'Uconnect Box Requires Service' errors, and instrument clusters that stay awake and drain the battery are the refresh years' signature complaints.

7. Check 07

   Watch the dash for a 'Stop/Start Not Ready' message and ask when the batteries were last replaced. A dying auxiliary ESS battery will drag down a brand-new main battery.

8. Check 08

   Check carpets, footwells, and the headliner edges for water stains — top, freedom-panel, and door seal leaks are common and usually fixable, but you want to price them in.
