Kia K5 2021–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
Run the VIN at NHTSA.gov or Kia's recall page and get every campaign closed before money changes hands — early cars stack several: occupant-detection module (21V-164, 2021), steering software (21V-447, 2021–2022 GT), fuel pipe (21V-519, 2021–2022 GT), DCT oil pump (22V-760, 2021–2023 GT), curtain airbags (23V-149, 2021–2023), fuel-tank check valve (25V-794, 2021–2024 1.6T).
-
On a GT: crawl through a parking lot and in stop-and-go, forward and reverse. Rhythmic shudder, a long pause off the line, or harsh 1–2 shifts is the documented DCT complaint — ask the dealer to confirm the latest transmission software (Kia service actions SA502/SA526 and TSB TRA111) is installed.
-
On a 2021–2022 LX: if it starts with a metal key, it has no immobilizer. Confirm the free Kia anti-theft software upgrade was installed (a Kia dealer can check by VIN) and expect higher insurance quotes in theft-heavy metros.
-
On any 2021–2024 1.6T: confirm recall 25V-794 (fuel-tank check valve) shows closed, and sniff for fuel odor around the rear of the car after a full tank.
-
Cold-start it yourself and check the oil level and service records — both turbo engines are direct-injected and spec 0W-20 (1.6T) or 0W-30 (2.5T); you want receipts, not promises.
-
On 2021–2023 cars, confirm the side-curtain-airbag inspection (23V-149) was actually performed, not just mailed about.
-
On AWD cars, listen for driveline binding in tight full-lock turns — Kia has a service bulletin for 4WD coupling actuator replacement on this platform.
