Kia Sorento 2021–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

    Run the VIN at owners.kia.com or nhtsa.gov/recalls before anything else. This generation's list includes SC214 (2021 2.5T fuel pipe), SC250 (2021–2022 DCT oil pump), SC241 (HEV/PHEV seat-belt pretensioners), SC249 (HEV/PHEV tow-hitch harness), the 2021–2023 HVAC blower-harness fire recall (25V-649), and 2024–2025 steering-harness and headlight-software recalls.

  2. Check 02

On a 2.5T: creep the car at under 5 mph in a parking lot and feel for shudder or vibration through the floor — that's the classic wet-DCT clutch judder Kia's TSB TRA100 describes. Also watch for a long hesitation when you tip into the throttle from a stop.

  3. Check 03

On a 2.5T: ask the dealer to confirm the transmission control software is current (TSBs TRA100/TRA111 and the SC250 recall reflash). A car that still judders after the updates has usually been waiting on a clutch-pack replacement.

  4. Check 04

Check the oil level and ask about top-ups between changes. Early Smartstream 2.5s have forum-documented oil consumption; a quart between oil changes is worth negotiating over, a quart every 1,000 miles is a walk-away.

  5. Check 05

Run the HVAC fan at speed 3 for several minutes and sniff for any burning or hot-plastic smell — the 2021–2023 blower-harness recall (25V-649) exists because thin factory wiring can overheat. Repairs only started in late 2025, so many cars are still unfixed.

  6. Check 06

On a Hybrid or PHEV: confirm the seat-belt pretensioner recall (SC241) and — if it has a factory tow hitch — the tow-hitch harness recall (SC249) are both closed. SC249 came with a park-outside advisory.

  7. Check 07

Check the rear-view camera image while in reverse; broken mounting clips (recall 23V-610 on 2022–2023) make the picture cut in and out.

  8. Check 08

Verify warranty status: Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty applies to the original owner; as a used buyer you get the 5-year/60,000-mile balance. On a DCT car, that difference matters.

Walk-away signals

2021–2022 with the 2.5T unless the SC250 oil-pump recall and DCT software updates are documented · 2021 2.5T without proof of the SC214 fuel-pipe recall
