Nissan Sentra 2020–2025 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. On 2020–2022 cars, confirm tie-rod recall 23V581 (Nissan R23B3) was completed — cars fixed under the earlier 2021 recall (21V461) still need the newer repair.

2. Check 02

   Test drive at light throttle between 15 and 40 mph: shudder, judder, or a rubber-band surge/hesitation from a stop are the classic CVT complaints. Walk away or budget accordingly.

3. Check 03

   Watch the tach on a steady cruise — RPM flare without matching acceleration means the CVT belt is slipping.

4. Check 04

   On 2020–2021 cars, check the rearview camera image for distortion or blackouts (recall 23V628) and ask whether the car has ever had repeated dead batteries (known parasitic-drain issue, TSB NTB21-053B).

5. Check 05

   Ask directly whether the forward collision warning or automatic emergency braking has ever activated for no reason; check the dash for FCW/AEB malfunction lights on startup.

6. Check 06

   Ask for CVT fluid service records — NS-3 fluid roughly every 30k–60k miles is cheap insurance on any Nissan CVT.

7. Check 07

   On a 2024, confirm the front driveshaft recall (24V304) was inspected — an improperly seated driveshaft can leak CVT fluid and cause loss of drive.

8. Check 08

   Steering check: the wheel should be centered and vibration-free at highway speed. Off-center or shaking points straight at the tie-rod issue.
