Subaru Outback 2015–2019 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
Cold-start the car and drive it at light throttle between 20–40 mph — a rhythmic shudder or vibration (worst when cold, often in gentle turns) is the classic Lineartronic torque-converter complaint. Walk away or price in a transmission.
-
Ask for proof of any CVT fluid service. Subaru calls it lifetime fluid; a documented drain-and-fill around 60k–90k is a good sign the owner paid attention.
-
Check the battery date code and ask how many batteries the car has had. Repeated dead batteries point to the known parasitic-drain issue (DCM/CAN system) that Subaru settled a class action over.
-
Cycle the head unit hard: radio, Bluetooth pairing, backup camera in reverse, volume knob. Freezing, reboots, or a black camera screen are the known Starlink head-unit faults — on 2018s, confirm recall WTZ-85 (slow-booting backup camera) was performed.
-
Inspect the windshield edge-to-edge, especially near the wiper de-icer strip at the base — 2015–2016 cars crack easily there, and EyeSight cars need camera recalibration with every replacement.
-
On 2.5i cars, check the oil level and ask about top-offs between changes. More than a quart per 1,200 miles is outside even Subaru's generous old threshold.
-
Verify open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov — including the 2015 EyeSight brake-light-switch reprogram.
2015 (first-year infotainment, windshield cracking, CVT extension now expired) · 2016–2018 only if the CVT hasn't been serviced or shows any shudder — no warranty extension covered these years
