Toyota Tacoma 2024–2026 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
Run the VIN at toyota.com/recall. On any 2024–2025, confirm the rear brake hose recall (25V-058) shows completed — the fix is both rear hoses replaced, and the campaign was expanded in July 2025 to cover more configurations.
-
On a 2024: ask for service records showing whether the transmission and torque converter were replaced under T-SB-0076-24 / T-SB-0094-24. A truck with the replacement already done is a better buy than one that's never shown symptoms — the failing population was built early.
-
Test drive cold: watch for delayed or missing gear engagement, harsh 1–2 shifts, lurching at parking-lot speeds, or any transmission warning light. Any of those on a 2024 means the TSB work is likely still pending — free at a dealer, but make them do it before money changes hands.
-
Check the 12V battery: ask if it's been replaced, look at the date code, and ask whether the truck has needed jump-starts after sitting. Dead-after-three-days batteries are a documented owner complaint on both gas and hybrid trucks.
-
On TRD Off-Road/Pro/Trailhunter: eyeball all four shocks (and on TRD Pro, the IsoDynamic seat dampers) for oil film or wet residue — owners have documented leaking factory dampers replaced under warranty.
-
On a hybrid (i-FORCE MAX): drive it cold and warm through stop-and-go. Some EV-to-gas handoff roughness is normal character; loud clunks or shudder are worth a dealer look while it's under warranty.
-
Do the powertrain-warranty math before you buy: 60 months/60,000 miles from first sale. The transmission TSB rides on that warranty, so a truck with plenty left is worth real money on this generation.
2024 early builds — unless the transmission was already replaced under TSB or shifts flawlessly, and recall 25V-058 shows completed
