Volkswagen Jetta 2005–2010 · Pre-purchase checklist
Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.
-
On any 2.0T FSI (BPY): ask for proof the cam follower has been inspected or replaced. If none exists, negotiate as if the camshaft and HPFP are unknowns — pulling the follower is a cheap first job after purchase.
-
On 2009–2010 TDIs: listen for excess diesel clatter, hard starts, or hesitation; ask whether the fuel filter has ever shown metal glitter. Any of those on a CP4 car is a walk-away.
-
On DSG cars: demand receipts for 40,000-mile fluid + filter services and confirm recall 09V-333 (temperature sensor) was performed. Test drive from cold — flashing PRND lights, shudder, or a drop to neutral means mechatronic trouble.
-
On 2005–2006 cars: work every switch on the driver's door (window, locks, mirror) several times with the door open and closed — intermittent operation is the classic too-short door harness failure.
-
Watch for misfire codes or rough idle on 2.5L and 2.0T cars — ignition coils are a generation-wide wear item; ask if the coil service action was ever done.
-
On 2.5L cars, check the back of the engine near the transmission for oil seep — a leaking vacuum pump seal mimics a rear main seal leak and gets misdiagnosed.
-
On BPY and TDI cars, verify timing-belt service by date and mileage (these are interference engines); the 2.5L uses a chain and is exempt.
-
Run the VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov — this generation had several, including the DSG sensor recall.
