BMW 5 Series 2017–2023 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes, not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Cold engine, flashlight under the intake manifold: look for coolant residue or oil seepage around the oil filter housing, the signature G30 leak point on 530i and 540i.

2. Check 02

   Check the coolant expansion tank level and ask directly whether the car has needed coolant top-offs; slow unexplained coolant loss is the classic symptom of brittle plastic fittings.

3. Check 03

   Look for oil weeping along the valve cover edges and a burnt-oil smell after a drive. Valve cover gaskets harden with heat on both the four and six.

4. Check 04

   On a 530e: run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and require proof the 20V-601 high-voltage battery recall was performed; also verify it charges to full on a Level 2 charger.

5. Check 05

   On an M550i: check the oil level and ask how much oil it uses between changes; walk away from a V8 with no service history.

6. Check 06

   Cycle the iDrive screen, backup camera, and driver-assist features through a full drive. Screen blackouts and camera glitches are the most common electrical complaints, and a 2018–2020 backup-camera recall applies to many cars.

7. Check 07

   Run the VIN for open recalls generally. Some 2020–2022 530i cars are under a starter-relay corrosion recall with fire risk.

8. Check 08

   Pull the service history for the ZF 8-speed: a documented fluid service by 60k–80k miles is a good sign; a 100k+ car on original fluid is a negotiating point.
