Engine oil + filter — 3.0L Power Stroke diesel (severe-schedule default)
$130–$220The 2018–2020 3.0L Power Stroke is the one engine here with real published mileages instead of a monitor, and Ford states them as ranges with a separate never-exceed cap: 7,500–10,000 miles under normal driving (do not exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months), 5,000–7,500 with moderate towing and periods of idling (do not exceed 7,500 miles or 6 months), and 3,000–5,000 under heavy towing and extended idling (do not exceed 5,000 miles or 3 months). Those upper figures are ceilings, not the recommendation — plan on the bottom of whichever column you actually live in, which for most people who bought a diesel half-ton to tow means 5,000 miles. The oil itself changes with the duty, not just the interval: 5W-30 meeting API FA-4 (Ford WSS-M2C214-B1) for normal running, but 5W-40 meeting API CK-4 when towing — a different oil, not a thicker version of the same one. Capacity is 6.5 quarts and the filter is a Motorcraft FL-2081 cartridge (Ford JL3Z-6731-A) — not the FL-500S spin-on the gas engines use and not the 2.7L's cartridge either, so neither oil-filter entry on the parts desk covers this engine. Diesel-spec FA-4/CK-4 oil costs meaningfully more per quart than the gas engines' 5W-20/5W-30, which is why this is priced as its own line rather than averaged into one misleading number.

Sources tied to Ford's severe chart put the 10-speed 10R80 at roughly 60,000 miles under towing/severe use; owner-forum reporting on the 6-speed 6R80 points the same direction, though a distinct published severe number specifically for the 6R80 wasn't found. Given how many F-150s actually tow or haul, default to the 60k severe cadence rather than assume the 150k confirmed-light-duty number applies. That's not the same as 'it doesn't need it': brake fluid pulls moisture from the air regardless of what the manual tracks, and it degrades on a calendar as much as a mileage clock. Shocks and struts (front & rear)

A commonly cited working range is 50,000–100,000 miles, sooner if the truck sees off-road use or regularly runs loaded/towing, both of which accelerate wear past what a commuter-only truck sees. The interaction that matters: worn shocks/struts cause uneven, cupped tire wear on their own, independent of anything happening with the alignment — a shop that blames 'alignment' for cupped tread without checking the shocks first is chasing the wrong cause. Budget a wheel alignment (below) right after replacing either end. Unlike some vehicles in this catalog, this generation's documented failure list doesn't include a suspension, alignment, or tire-wear defect — the wear described here is ordinary truck-duty wear (payload, towing, unpaved miles), not a factory issue.

The rubber boots sealing grease into the front CV joints are a wear item with no fixed factory interval; once a boot tears, grease escapes and dirt/water gets in, and the joint itself is usually on a countdown from there — which is why shops typically replace the whole axle assembly rather than just the boot. Start inspecting around 60,000 miles or 5 years, with full-assembly replacement typically needed somewhere in the 80,000–130,000-mile range. A torn boot flinging grease near the front brakes is also worth checking for if you notice a sudden pull or noise from one wheel — contaminated pads or a rotor don't brake the same on one side as the other.

Standing guidance: load-test starting around year 3, and replace proactively by year 5 rather than waiting for a no-start, since a battery on its way out tends to fail without much warning (often on the first genuinely cold morning). Get the size and rating right — this generation runs a BCI Group 48 (H6, ~760 CCA) on most trims, Group 94R (H7, ~800 CCA) on upper trims (King Ranch/Lariat/Platinum) and heavier-electrical builds, and Group 49/H8 (~850 CCA) on the 2019+ 3.0L Power Stroke diesel; installing the wrong group size can physically not fit the tray or clamp, and under-rating the CCA leaves a diesel or a heavily-optioned truck marginal in cold weather.
