Use the severe number as your default: most US daily driving qualifies as severe by Honda's own definition. Manual-transmission cars and the Si's 6-speed don't follow this item.

  • Wheel alignment

    This isn't a manufacturer-scheduled item — it's triggered by events (new tires, any suspension work) plus a periodic check roughly every 12k–15k miles or annually. It matters more than usual on THIS generation: the documented rear-camber issue (see the case file's problem list) already eats inner rear tread, and a car that's out of alignment on top of that will chew through tires fast. Always get an alignment when you replace tires or do any suspension work below — skipping it wastes the money you just spent, since new tires wear unevenly on a misaligned car.

  • Tires — buy the right type for how you actually drive

    This isn't a manufacturer item, but it belongs on a real cost-to-own ledger: the 8th-gen Civic is a commuter compact, not a performance or off-road platform, so a standard all-season tire is the right call — not a stiffer performance tire chasing tenths you won't use, and there's no legitimate off-road/all-terrain use case for this car to justify one. Mismatching tire type to actual use means worse wet/wintry grip and shorter tread life for no real upside. Combined with the rear-camber quirk and alignment above, the wrong tire on a car that's already prone to inner-edge wear compounds the problem fast.

    One accessory belt runs the alternator, power steering, and A/C compressor on this engine. It's a normal wear item, not a documented failure — inspect for cracking or glazing around 60k and replace before it snaps and stops the car.

  • Brake fluid flush

    This generation's normal-schedule interval is 30k/24 months — brake fluid is hygroscopic and pulls moisture from the air regardless of how many miles you drive, so don't stretch this one on a low-mileage car. No distinct severe-condition number is published for this generation; if you're braking hard and often (mountains, towing, city traffic), don't wait for the odometer.

  • Shocks and struts

    $900–$1,800 Shop job

    Not a Honda-published interval — a generic wear range, typically 50k–100k before ride quality and handling degrade noticeably. Worn shocks/struts don't just ride worse: they let the tire's contact patch bounce and scallop unevenly, which shows up as premature, cupped tire wear well before the strut itself fails outright. If you're going through tires faster than expected, check these before assuming it's purely an alignment problem. Budget for an alignment right after replacing them.

  • CV axle boots (inspect) / CV axles (replace if torn)

    $300–$950 Shop job

    Boots typically last 70k–130k; start actually checking at 60k or once the car passes 5 years old, whichever comes first — it's a 2-minute visual check on a lift, not worth skipping. A torn boot flings grease onto the inner wheel and rotor, which can contaminate the front brake pads above and cause pulling or uneven braking. Boot-only replacement is far cheaper than waiting for the whole axle to fail — popping/clicking sounds on sharp turns mean you waited too long.

  • Control arm bushings

    Typically good for 70k–120k on decent roads, but pushed down to 50k–80k on rough roads or in harsh winter climates — and age matters independent of mileage, with real deterioration showing up after 8–10 years regardless of how few miles are on the car. Worn bushings let the wheel shift out of designed geometry under load, which throws off alignment even right after a fresh alignment job — if a shop keeps re-aligning the same car and it won't hold, worn bushings are the usual reason why. Clunking over bumps and a vague, wandery steering feel are the tells.

    This generation's factory schedule has you check plugs at 30k and replace at 110k/36 months — the R18's platinum-tipped plugs are a genuinely long-life design, this isn't a shop upsell. Running past due wears the ignition system and can cost you fuel economy before it costs you a misfire.

  • Valve clearance inspection

    $150–$250 Shop job

    Honda's own spec calls for inspecting valve clearance on this single-cam engine around 110k — the same checkpoint as the spark plugs — and adjusting only if it's out of spec. In practice the R18 holds its lash well; many go 130k–180k with no adjustment needed. Worth having checked at this mileage anyway, since it's a feeler-gauge job most owners won't do themselves.

  • Coolant (first service — Maintenance Minder code 5)

    $100–$180 Shop job

    Honda prints no first-coolant mileage for this generation. Coolant is Maintenance Minder sub-item 5, 'replace engine coolant' — the car raises the code when it decides you're due, the same way it handles oil — which is why this sits alongside the plugs and the valve check rather than in a bucket of its own. Third-party schedules circulate much shorter numbers for this car and none of them are Honda's: Firestone prints every 30,000 miles, and the Haynes page prints 60,000 miles/36 months for a '2001–2011 Civic' block that lumps these cars in with the older ones that predate the Maintenance Minder entirely. What the factory actually put in is Honda Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2 — the blue, pre-mixed 50/50 long-life coolant named in this generation's own manual — and Honda service guidance puts the original factory fill at a 10-year service life, with replacement Type 2 good for 5. Two things follow. Don't buy a coolant flush at 60,000 miles because a printed schedule says so; on this car that's a service the manufacturer isn't calling for. And, more to the point now: every 2006–2011 Civic is long past 10 years old, so if there's no record of the coolant ever being changed, it's due on age no matter what the odometer reads. Keep checking level and condition at every service in between — a long interval assumes the system isn't leaking, and on this generation disappearing coolant is never a 'just top it off' situation, because that's the cracked-block symptom on a 2006–2008 car.

    Still on the severe-duty 30k cadence from here if that's your driving pattern — this isn't a one-time-and-done service. If you've confirmed genuine light-duty highway use and have been following the 120k normal schedule instead, this is your second service.

  • Coolant (ongoing service)

    Repeat cadence once the first change is behind you, not a one-time event. Honda prints no follow-up mileage either — it's still Maintenance Minder code 5 — but the replacement Type 2 coolant you just put in carries a 5-year service life rather than the 10 years Honda gives the original factory fill, so plan on roughly every 5 years from here and let the calendar drive it. Same caution as the first service: coolant that keeps needing topping up is a leak, not a maintenance item, and on a 2006–2008 car that's the cracked-block symptom.

  • Battery

    $130–$280 DIY-realistic

    Batteries fail on a calendar, not an odometer — average lifespan is 3–5 years, and the same 'replace before it strands you' logic as an oil change applies: get it load-tested starting around year 3, and plan on proactive replacement by year 5 regardless of mileage, low or high. Waiting for a no-start means it picks the worst moment, usually cold weather, which is also when a marginal battery is most likely to fail. On buy-it-where: some independent battery dealers claim big-box retailers get a different SKU tier of the same brand than an independent shop stocks; the retailer disputes this and it's genuinely contested — we can't verify which side is right, so we're not asserting it either way. What you CAN verify at any retailer: match the correct BCI group size and cold-cranking-amp rating for this car (see the parts desk), and read the actual warranty terms on the specific battery in front of you — documented warranty-length differences between retailers are real and a more reliable signal than an unverifiable tier claim.
