Hyundai Santa Fe 2019–2023 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

Identify the powertrain era first: 2019–2020 = Theta II 2.4/2.0T (engine-failure family); 2021–2023 = Smartstream 2.5/2.5T or hybrid. It changes everything about the risk.

  2. Check 02

On a 2019, have a Hyundai dealer run the VIN: KSDS knock-sensor software (Campaign 953) installed, and TXXI lifetime bearing-warranty eligibility intact (accident/salvage history and skipped software can void it).

  3. Check 03

On a 2020, do the same VIN check but assume nothing: the 2020 Santa Fe does not appear on Hyundai's published TXXC/TXXI warranty-extension lists despite using the same engines.

  4. Check 04

Cold-start the 2.4/2.0T and listen for a deep knock or rod rumble; ask if the check-engine light has ever blinked with code P1326.

  5. Check 05

Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. The big one is the tow-hitch-harness fire recall (23V-181) — it applies 2019–2023 including hybrids, and Hyundai told owners to park outside until fixed.

  6. Check 06

On a 2021–2022 2.5T, confirm the DCT oil-pump recall (22V-746) is closed, then creep it through a parking lot and stop-and-go traffic — hesitation and shudder show up at low speed, not on the highway.

  7. Check 07

Check the oil level and ask about top-offs between changes; oil consumption complaints exist on both the 2.4 and the 2.5 families.

  8. Check 08

On 2020–2021 cars built in late 2020, confirm the windshield-bonding recall (Hyundai Recall 216) was performed.

Walk-away signals

2019–2020 (Theta II 2.4/2.0T bearing-failure exposure; 2020 isn't on the published lifetime-warranty lists) · 2021–2022 2.5T until the DCT recall (22V-746) is verified done
