Jeep Grand Cherokee 2005–2010 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN with a Jeep dealer or NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the ignition-switch recall (P41 / NHTSA 14V-438, 2005–2007) or WIN module recall (P57 / 14V-567; 10V-200 for 2010) was completed.

2. Check 02

   On a 5.7 Hemi: listen for ticking at idle when warm and check for misfire codes (P0300-series). A tick plus a misfire on one cylinder is the classic failing-MDS-lifter signature.

3. Check 03

   On a 4.7: verify the cooling system works perfectly and ask directly whether it has ever overheated. Check the oil filler for sludge — this engine punishes neglect.

4. Check 04

   Cold-start test drive: a long pause before Drive or Reverse engages on a 545RFE car points to the known torque-converter drain-back issue.

5. Check 05

   On 4WD models, inspect the rear CV boot on the front driveshaft for cracks or slung grease, and listen for driveline rumble or vibration at speed.

6. Check 06

   Cycle the HVAC through hot, cold, and every vent position and listen for clicking behind the dash — blend door actuators are a known weak point, and the driver's side is buried.

7. Check 07

   Test every window, the tailgate glass, and all interior electronics; 2005–2006 cars in particular logged heavy electrical-system complaint volume with NHTSA.
