Kia Sorento 2016–2020 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Run the VIN at a Kia dealer (or owners.kia.com/us/en/recalls.html) for open recalls and campaign status — especially the KSDS knock-sensor update and, on replaced engines, the SC172 high-pressure fuel pipe recall.

2. Check 02

   On 2.4L/2.0T cars: ask directly whether the engine was ever replaced under recall or warranty. A documented Kia replacement engine with the fuel-pipe recall done is a plus, not a minus.

3. Check 03

   Cold-start the engine yourself and listen for a deep knock or rattle from the bottom end — classic Theta II rod-bearing noise. Walk away if you hear it.

4. Check 04

   Check the oil level and condition on the dipstick. A low level on a 'just serviced' car suggests it's burning oil — the known precursor to bearing failure.

5. Check 05

   On 2016–2017 V6 cars: check for coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, or a sweet smell — the head-bolt/head-gasket issue — and ask whether the WTY035 extended-warranty inspection or repair was done.

6. Check 06

   Verify both low-beam headlights work and look for melted or discolored bulb connectors — repeat low-beam burnout is a known Kia electrical quirk.

7. Check 07

   On the highway test drive, note whether the car tracks straight or wanders and needs constant correction.

8. Check 08

   On 2019–2020 V6 cars, confirm the 8-speed shifts cleanly through all gears with no flare or harsh downshifts.
