Subaru Forester 2019–2024 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

Run the VIN for open recalls — especially the 2019-only PCV valve recall (NHTSA 19V-856 / Subaru WUW-08) and the 2019 rear stabilizer bracket recall (21V-263). Confirm both were completed.

  2. Check 02

On 2019–2020 cars, ask directly how many 12V batteries the car has been through. Repeated dead batteries = the known DCM parasitic-drain issue; check whether the dealer already updated or replaced the DCM.

  3. Check 03

Inspect the windshield edge-to-edge in good light for chips, cracks, and evidence of replacement (aftermarket glass markings). Ask whether EyeSight was recalibrated after any glass replacement.

  4. Check 04

Scan for stored codes P0126, P2682, P26A3, or P26A5 — all point to the thermo control valve. Also watch the temp gauge on the test drive and check for coolant smell after a hard run.

  5. Check 05

From a stop, accelerate gently several times when the car is cold. Shudder, judder, or rubber-band hesitation from the CVT means it needs at minimum a TCM reflash and fluid service — negotiate accordingly.

  6. Check 06

Cycle the power rear gate five or six times from the fob, dash button, and gate button. Three beeps and a refusal to open is the known latch/module fault on 2019–2020 cars.

  7. Check 07

Drive a stretch of highway with EyeSight active. Note any warning lights, random adaptive-cruise dropouts, or phantom braking events.

  8. Check 08

Confirm CVT fluid history. If it was ever serviced outside a Subaru-savvy shop, ask what fluid went in — the Lineartronic is picky, and wrong fluid causes judder.

Walk-away signals
