Subaru Outback 2005–2009 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

  1. Check 01

Cold engine, on a lift or with a flashlight: inspect the head-gasket seam on both sides of the EJ253 block for coolant crust or oil weep — the leak is external and visible before it's terminal.

  2. Check 02

Ask directly for head-gasket receipts. 'Done with updated Subaru MLS gaskets + timing belt + water pump' is the answer you want on any 2.5i over ~100k miles.

  3. Check 03

Drive full-lock circles in a parking lot both directions. Any shudder, hop, or binding on an automatic = torque bind, budget $700–$1,800.

  4. Check 04

Listen for a highway hum that changes with gentle lane weaves — classic worn wheel bearing on this generation.

  5. Check 05

On a 2.5XT: demand oil-change records and ask whether the turbo oil-supply banjo-bolt screen was serviced or removed. No records on a 2005–2006 XT is a walk-away.

  6. Check 06

Check for a stored or recent P0420 code with a scanner — a tired catalytic converter or rear O2 sensor is common and matters in emissions states.

  7. Check 07

Verify the Takata passenger-airbag recall was completed by VIN (free at a Subaru dealer or nhtsa.gov).

  8. Check 08

On the 3.0R, look under the timing cover area at the front of the engine for oil seepage dripping onto the undertray.

Walk-away signals

2005 (first-year — worst head-gasket and wheel-bearing complaint rates) · 2005–2006 2.5XT (early banjo-bolt turbo oil-starvation design) unless the screen service is documented
