Toyota Highlander 2020–present · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   On 2020–2022 V6 cars: drive it cold AND warm. Feel for hesitation pulling away, a harsh or delayed 2–3 shift, clunks in stop-and-go, or shudder at light throttle around 25–45 mph — all UA80 transmission red flags.

2. Check 02

   Listen for a high-pitched whine that rises with road speed (not engine speed) — a reported early sign of UA80 counter-gear trouble.

3. Check 03

   Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls — early cars had the stop-start fuel-delivery ECU recall (20V-162), VSC software recall (22V-239), and occupant-classification sensor recall (23V-865); later cars added the blank gauge-cluster recall (25V-595, 2023–2025), the camera-freeze recall (25V-744, 2023–2025 with the Panoramic View Monitor), and the third-row center belt anchor recall (25V-872, 2024–2025). Confirm every campaign is closed.

4. Check 04

   On 2021–2024 trucks: fold and adjust the second-row seat backs, then push on them to confirm they lock solidly — recall 26V-128 (550,000 vehicles) covers recliners that may not latch after adjustment. The fix (new recliner return springs) is free; owner letters started mailing April 2026.

5. Check 05

   Cycle the infotainment: cold start, back-up camera, CarPlay. A screen that reboots, flashes black, or drops the camera feed is a known head-unit issue — check if the software update (TSB T-SB-0055-22) was applied.

6. Check 06

   Inspect the A/C condenser through the front grille for bent fins or debris strikes, and confirm the A/C blows cold — condenser punctures are common, expensive, and denied under warranty as road damage.

7. Check 07

   Scan the windshield edge-to-edge in daylight for chips and spreading cracks; replacement with camera recalibration is not cheap on this car.

8. Check 08

   On 2023+ turbo cars: confirm the hesitation/surging ECU reflash (TSB T-SB-0087-23) was done on early 2023 builds, and accept that some engine noise under load is normal for this four-cylinder.

9. Check 09

   On hybrids: nothing scary — just verify oil-change history and that the 12V battery (a common quiet failure on all modern Toyotas) holds charge.
