Toyota Sienna 2011–2020 · Pre-purchase checklist

Bring this to the inspection. Every check below is specific to this generation's documented failure modes — not generic used-car advice.

1. Check 01

   Cycle BOTH power sliding doors several times from the dash buttons, key fob, and door handles. Slow, grinding, or stalling movement means a fraying cable or tired motor — a known, common failure on 2011–2018.

2. Check 02

   Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Toyota's recall lookup. Key ones: sliding-door recall G04 (2011–2016), Denso fuel-pump recall (2017–2020), Takata airbag (2011–2014). Walk away from open safety recalls, or make the seller close them first.

3. Check 03

   On 2017–2018: drive it below 30 mph with light throttle. Hesitation off the line, a delayed or harsh 2-3 upshift, or a high-pitched whine points to the early 8-speed problem — ask for records of the TSB software update or transmission replacement.

4. Check 04

   Cold start: listen at the front of the engine for a wobbling/rattling water pump bearing, and look for pink coolant crust or streaks below the pump.

5. Check 05

   On 2011–2012: check the front tires for uneven/inner-edge wear and feel for steering pull — the inner tie rods on the 2011 were a top complaint.

6. Check 06

   On AWD vans: confirm what tires are on it. Factory fitment is run-flats with NO spare tire; mismatched cheap tires or a bare trunk floor tells you how the last owner treated the tire budget.

7. Check 07

   Check that the second- and third-row seats latch, fold, and slide properly — hardware is expensive and often ignored.

8. Check 08

   Look for oil seepage at the timing cover (common minor 2GR weep) and verify consistent oil-change records.
